1 Mais lorsque les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin apprirent que les exilés construisaient un sanctuaireà Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël,	1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the LORD, the God of Israel,
2 ils s'en vinrent trouver Zorobabel, Josué et les chefs de famille et leur dirent: "Nous voulons bâtiravec vous, car, comme vous, nous cherchons votre Dieu et lui sacrifions depuis le temps d'Asarhaddon, roid'Assur, qui nous amena ici."	2 they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers' houses and said to them, "Let us build with you; for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria who brought us here."
3 Zorobabel, Josué et les autres chefs de familles israélites leur répondirent: "Il ne convient point quenous bâtissions, vous et nous, un Temple à notre Dieu: C'est à nous seuls de bâtir pour Yahvé le Dieu d'Israël,comme nous l'a prescrit Cyrus, roi de Perse."	3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' houses in Israel said to them, "You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us."
4 Alors le peuple du pays se mit à décourager les gens de Juda et à les effrayer pour qu'ils ne bâtissentplus;	4 Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and made them afraid to build,
5 on soudoya contre eux des conseillers pour faire échouer leur plan, pendant tout le temps de Cyrus,roi de Perse, jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.	5 and hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 Sous le règne de Xerxès, au début de son règne, ils rédigèrent une plainte contre les habitants de Judaet de Jérusalem.	6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 Au temps d'Artaxerxès, Mithridate, Tabéel et leurs autres collègues écrivirent contre Jérusalem àArtaxerxès, roi de Perse. Le texte du document était d'écriture araméenne et de langue araméenne.	7 And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam and Mithredath and Tabeel and the rest of their associates wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; the letter was written in Aramaic and translated.
8 Puis Rehum, gouverneur, et Shimshaï, secrétaire, écrivirent au roi Artaxerxès, contre Jérusalem, lalettre qui suit --	8 Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows--
9 Rehum, le gouverneur, Shimshaï, le secrétaire et leurs autres collègues; les juges et les légats,fonctionnaires perses; les gens d'Uruk, de Babylone et de Suse -- c'est-à-dire les Elamites --	9 then wrote Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the governors, the officials, the Persians, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites,
10 et les autres peuples que le grand et illustre Assurbanipal a déportés et établis dans les villes deSamarie et dans le reste de la Transeuphratène.	10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, and now
11 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'ils lui envoyèrent: "Au roi Artaxerxès, tes serviteurs, les gens deTranseuphratène: Maintenant donc	11 this is a copy of the letter that they sent-- "To Artaxerxes the king: Your servants, the men of the province Beyond the River, send greeting. And now
12 le roi doit être informé que les Juifs, montés de chez toi vers nous, et venus à Jérusalem, sont entrain de rebâtir la ville rebelle et perverse; ils commencent à restaurer les remparts et ils creusent les fondations.	12 be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city; they are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations.
13 Maintenant le roi doit être informé que si cette ville est rebâtie et les remparts restaurés, on nepaiera plus impôts, contributions ni droits de passage, et qu'en fin de compte mon roi sera lésé.	13 Now be it known to the king that, if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be impaired.
14 Maintenant, mangeant le sel du palais, il ne nous paraît pas décent de voir cet affront fait au roi;aussi envoyons-nous au roi ces informations	14 Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not fitting for us to witness the king's dishonor, therefore we send and inform the king,
15 pour qu'on fasse des recherches dans les Mémoriaux de tes pères: dans ces Mémoriaux, tu trouveraset constateras que cette ville est une ville rebelle, néfaste aux rois et aux provinces, et qu'on y a fomenté desséditions depuis les temps anciens. C'est pourquoi cette ville fut détruite.	15 in order that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will find in the book of the records and learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and that sedition was stirred up in it from of old. That was why this city was laid waste.
16 Nous informons le roi que si cette ville est rebâtie et ses remparts relevés, tu n'auras bientôt plus deterritoires en Transeuphratène!"	16 We make known to the king that, if this city is rebuilt and its walls finished, you will then have no possession in the province Beyond the River."
17 Le roi envoya cette réponse: "A Rehum, gouverneur, à Shimshaï, secrétaire, et à leurs autrescollègues, résidant à Samarie et ailleurs, en Transeuphratène, paix! Maintenant donc	17 The king sent an answer: "To Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their associates who live in Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, greeting. And now
18 le document que vous nous avez envoyé a été, devant moi, lu dans sa traduction.	18 the letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.
19 Sur mon ordre, on a fait des recherches et l'on a trouvé que cette ville s'est soulevée contre les roisdepuis les temps anciens et que des révoltes et des séditions s'y produisirent.	19 And I made a decree, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city from of old has risen against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.
20 Des rois puissants ont régné à Jérusalem, qui dominèrent toute la Transeuphratène: on leur payaitimpôt, contributions et droits de passage.	20 And mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over the whole province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, custom, and toll were paid.
21 Donnez donc l'ordre qu'on interrompe l'entreprise de ces hommes: cette ville ne doit pas être rebâtietant que je n'aurai rien décidé.	21 Therefore make a decree that these men be made to cease, and that this city be not rebuilt, until a decree is made by me.
22 Gardez-vous d'agir avec négligence en cette affaire, de peur que le mal n'empire au préjudice desrois."	22 And take care not to be slack in this matter; why should damage grow to the hurt of the king?"
23 Dès que la copie du document du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Rehum, le gouverneur,Shimshaï, le secrétaire, et leurs collègues, ils partirent en toute hâte pour Jérusalem chez les Juifs et, par la forcedes armes, arrêtèrent leurs travaux.	23 Then, when the copy of King Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their associates, they went in haste to the Jews at Jerusalem and by force and power made them cease.
24 C'est ainsi qu'avaient été arrêtés les travaux pour le Temple de Dieu à Jérusalem: ils demeurèrentinterrompus jusqu'à la deuxième année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.	24 Then the work on the house of God which is in Jerusalem stopped; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
