JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Donc Joseph alla avertir Pharaon: "Mon père et mes frères, dit-il, sont arrivés du pays de Canaanavec leur petit et leur gros bétail et tout ce qui leur appartient; les voici dans la terre de Goshèn."	1 Then Joseph went in and told Pharao, saying: My father and brethren, their sheep and their herds, and all that they possess, are come out of the land of Chanaan: and behold they stay in the land of Gessen.
2 Il avait pris cinq de ses frères, qu'il présenta à Pharaon.	2 Five men also the last of his brethren, he presented before the king:
3 Celui-ci demanda à ses frères: "Quel est votre métier", et ils répondirent: "Tes serviteurs sont desbergers, nous-mêmes comme déjà nos pères."	3 And he asked them: What is your occupation? They answered: Re thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.
4 Ils dirent aussi à Pharaon: "Nous sommes venus séjourner dans le pays, car il n'y a plus de pâturepour les troupeaux de tes serviteurs: la famine, en effet, accable le pays de Canaan. Permets maintenant que tesserviteurs demeurent dans la terre de Goshèn."	4 We are come to sojourn in thy land, because there is no grass for the flocks of thy servants, the famine being very grievous in the land of Chanaan: and we pray thee to give orders that we thy servants may be in the land of Gessen.
5 Alors Pharaon dit à Joseph: Jacob et ses fils vinrent en Egypte auprès de Joseph. Pharaon, roid'Egypte, l'apprit et il dit à Joseph: "Ton père et tes frères sont arrivés près de toi. Le pays d'Egypte est à tadisposition: établis ton père et tes frères dans la meilleure région."	5 The king therefore said to Joseph: Thy father and thy brethren are come to thee.
6 "Qu'ils habitent la terre de Goshèn et, si tu sais qu'il y a parmi eux des hommes capables, place-lescomme régisseurs de mes propres troupeaux."	6 The land of Egypt is before thee: make them dwell in the best place, and give them the land of Gessen. And if thou knowest that there are industrious men among them, make them rulers over my cattle.
7 Alors Joseph introduisit son père Jacob et le présenta à Pharaon, et Jacob salua Pharaon.	7 After this Joseph brought in his to the king, and presented him before him: and he blessed him.
8 Pharaon demanda à Jacob: "Combien comptes-tu d'années de vie?"	8 And being asked by him: How many are the days of the years of thy life?
9 Et Jacob répondit à Pharaon: "Les années de mon séjour sur terre ont été de 13 0 ans, mes annéesont été brèves et malheureuses et n'ont pas atteint l'âge de mes pères, les années de leur séjour."	9 He answered: The days of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years, few, and evil, and they are not come up to the days of the pilgrimage of my fathers.
10 Jacob salua Pharaon et prit congé de lui.	10 And blessing the king, he went out.
11 Joseph établit son père et ses frères et il leur donna une propriété au pays d'Egypte, dans lameilleure région, la terre de Ramsès, comme l'avait ordonné Pharaon.	11 But Joseph gave a possession to his father and his brethren in Egypt, in the best place of the land, in Ramesses, as Pharao had commanded.
12 Joseph procura du pain à son père, à ses frères et à toute la famille de son père, selon le nombredes personnes à leur charge.	12 And he nourished them, and all his father's house, allowing food to every one.
13 Il n'y avait pas de pain sur toute la terre, car la famine était devenue très dure et le pays d'Egypteet le pays de Canaan languissaient de faim.	13 For in the whole world there was want of bread, and a famine had oppressed the land: more especially of Egypt and Chanaan.
14 Joseph ramassa tout l'argent qui se trouvait au pays d'Egypte et au pays de Canaan en échange dugrain qu'on achetait et il livra cet argent au palais de Pharaon.	14 Out of which he gathered up all the money for the corn which they bought, and brought it into the king's treasure.
15 Lorsque fut épuisé l'argent du pays d'Egypte et du pays de Canaan, tous les Egyptiens vinrent àJoseph en disant:"Donne-nous du pain! Pourquoi devrions-nous mourir sous tesyeux? Car il n'y a plus d'argent."	15 And when the buyers wanted money, all Egypt came to Joseph, saying: Give us bread: why should we die in thy presence, having now net money.
16 Alors Joseph leur dit: "Livrez vos troupeaux et je vous donnerai du pain en échange de vostroupeaux, s'il n'y a plus d'argent."	16 And he answered them: Bring your cattle, and for them I will give you food, if you have no money.
17 Ils amenèrent leurs troupeaux à Joseph et celui-ci leur donna du pain pour prix des chevaux, dupetit et du gros bétail et des ânes; il les nourrit de pain, cette année-là, en échange de leurs troupeaux.	17 And when they had brought them, he gave them food in exchange for their horses, and sheep, and oxen, end asses and he maintained them that year for the exchange of their cattle.
18 Lorsque fut écoulée cette année-là, ils revinrent vers lui l'année suivante et lui dirent: "Nous nepouvons le cacher à Monseigneur: vraiment l'argent est épuisé et les bestiaux sont déjà à Monseigneur, il ne resteà la disposition de Monseigneur que notre corps et notre terroir.	18 And they came the second year, and said to him: We will not hide from our lord, how that our money is spent, and our cattle also are gone: neither art thou ignorant that we have nothing now left but our bodies and our lands.
19 Pourquoi devrions-nous mourir sous tes yeux, nous et notre terroir? Acquiers donc nos personneset notre terroir pour du pain, et nous serons, avec notre terroir, les serfs de Pharaon. Mais donne-nous de quoisemer pour que nous restions en vie et ne mourions pas et que notre terroir ne soit pas désolé."	19 Why therefore shall we die before thy eyes? we will be thins, both we and our lands: buy us to be the king's servants, and give us seed, lest for want of tillers the land be turned into a wilderness.
20 Ainsi Joseph acquit pour Pharaon tout le terroir d'Egypte, car les Egyptiens vendirent chacun sonchamp, tant les pressait la famine, et le pays passa aux mains de Pharaon.	20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt, every man selling his possessions, because of the greatness of the famine. And he brought it into Pharao's hands:
21 Quant aux gens, il les réduisit en servage, d'un bout à l'autre du territoire égyptien.	21 And all its people from one end of the borders of Egypt, even to the other end thereof,
22 Il n'y eut que le terroir des prêtres qu'il n'acquit pas, car les prêtres recevaient une rente dePharaon et vivaient de la rente qu'ils recevaient de Pharaon. Aussi n'eurent-ils pas à vendre leur terroir.	22 Except the land of the priests, which had been given them by the king: to whom also a certain allowance of food was given out of the public stores, and therefore they were not forced to sell their possessions.
23 Puis Joseph dit au peuple: "Donc, je vous ai maintenant acquis pour Pharaon, avec votre terroir.Voici pour vous de la semence, pour ensemencer votre terroir.	23 Then Joseph said to the people : Behold as you see, both you and your lands belong to Pharao: take seed and sow the fields,
24 Mais, sur la récolte, vous devrez donner un cinquième à Pharaon, et les quatre autres parts serontà vous, pour la semence du champ, pour votre nourriture et celle de votre famille, pour la nourriture despersonnes à votre charge."	24 That you may have corn. The fifth part you shall give to the king: the other four you shall have for seed, and for food for your families and children.
25 Ils répondirent: "Tu nous as sauvé la vie! Puissions-nous seulement trouver grâce aux yeux deMonseigneur, et nous serons les serfs de Pharaon."	25 And they answered: Our life is in thy hand: only let my lord look favourably upon us, and we will gladly serve the king.
26 De cela, Joseph fit une règle, qui vaut encore aujourd'hui pour le terroir d'Egypte: on verse lecinquième à Pharaon. Seul le terroir des prêtres ne fut pas à Pharaon.	26 From that time unto this day, in the whole land of Egypt, the fifth part is paid to the king, and it is become as a law, except the land of the priests, which was free from this covenant.
27 Ainsi Israël s'établit au pays d'Egypte dans la terre de Goshèn. Ils y acquirent des propriétés,furent féconds et devinrent très nombreux.	27 So Israel dwelt in Egypt, that is, in the land of Gessen, and possessed it: and grew, and was multiplied exceedingly.
28 Jacob vécut dix-sept ans au pays d'Egypte et la durée de la vie de Jacob fut de 14 7 ans.	28 And he lived in it seventeen years: and all the days of his life came to a hundred and forty-seven years.
29 Lorsqu'approcha pour Israël le temps de sa mort, il appela son fils Joseph et lui dit: "Si j'ai tonaffection, mets ta main sous ma cuisse, montre-moi bienveillance et bonté: ne m'enterre pas en Egypte!	29 And when he saw that the day of his death drew nigh, he called his son Joseph, and said to him: If I have found favour in thy sight, put thy hand under my thigh; and thou shalt shew me this kindness and truth, not to bury me in Egypt:
30 Quand je serai couché avec mes pères, tu m'emporteras d'Egypte et tu m'enterreras dans leurtombeau." Il répondit: "Je ferai comme tu as dit."	30 But I will sleep with my fathers, end thou shalt take me away out of this land, and bury me in the burying place of my ancestors. And Joseph answered him: I will do what thou hast commanded.
31 Mais son père insista: "Prête-moi serment", et il lui prêta serment, pendant qu'Israël se prosternaitsur le chevet de son lit.	31 And he said: Swear then to me. And as he was swearing, Israel adored God, turning to the bed's head.
