1 Puis Joseph dit à son intendant: "Remplis les sacs de ces gens avec autant de vivres qu'ils peuventporter et mets l'argent de chacun à l'entrée de son sac.	1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.
2 Ma coupe, celle d'argent, tu la mettras à l'entrée du sac du plus jeune, avec le prix de son grain." Etil fit comme Joseph avait dit.	2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.
3 Lorsque le matin parut, on renvoya nos gens avec leurs ânes.	3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.
4 Ils étaient à peine sortis de la ville et n'étaient pas bien loin que Joseph dit à son intendant:"Debout! Cours après ces hommes, rattrape-les et dis-leur: Pourquoi avez-vous rendu le mal pour le bien?	4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
5 N'est-ce pas ce qui sert à mon maître pour boire et aussi pour lire les présages? C'est mal ce quevous avez fait!"	5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
6 Il les attrapa donc et leur redit ces paroles.	6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.
7 Mais ils répondirent: "Pourquoi Monseigneur parle-t-il ainsi?Loin de tes serviteurs de faire unechose pareille!	7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
8 Vois donc: l'argent que nous avions trouvé à l'entrée de nos sacs à blé, nous te l'avons rapporté dupays de Canaan, comment aurions-nous volé de la maison de ton maître argent ou or?	8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?
9 Celui de tes serviteurs avec qui on trouvera l'objet sera mis à mort et nous-mêmes deviendronsesclaves de Monseigneur."	9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.
10 Il reprit: "Eh bien! Qu'il en soit comme vous avez dit: celui avec qui on trouvera l'objet sera monesclave, mais vous autres vous serez quittes."	10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.
11 Vite, chacun descendit à terre son sac à blé et chacun l'ouvrit.	11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.
12 Il les fouilla en commençant par l'aîné et en finissant par le plus jeune, et la coupe fut trouvéedans le sac de Benjamin!	12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
13 Alors, ils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, rechargèrent chacun son âne et revinrent à la ville.	13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.
14 Lorsque Juda et ses frères entrèrent dans la maison de Joseph, celui-ci s'y trouvait encore, et ilstombèrent à terre devant lui.	14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.
15 Joseph leur demanda: "Quelle est cette action que vous avez commise? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'unhomme comme moi sait deviner?"	15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?
16 Et Juda répondit: "Que dirons-nous à Monseigneur, comment parler et comment nous justifier?C'est Dieu qui a mis en évidence la faute de tes serviteurs. Nous voici donc les esclaves de Monseigneur, aussibien nous autres que celui aux mains duquel on a trouvé la coupe."	16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.
17 Mais il reprit: "Loin de moi d'agir ainsi! L'homme aux mains duquel la coupe a été trouvée seramon esclave, mais vous, retournez en paix chez votre père."	17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
18 Alors Juda s'approcha de lui et dit: "S'il te plaît, Monseigneur, permets que ton serviteur fasseentendre un mot aux oreilles de Monseigneur, sans que ta colère s'enflamme contre ton serviteur, car tu esvraiment comme Pharaon!	18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
19 Monseigneur avait posé cette question à ses serviteurs:Avez-vous encore un père ou un frère?	19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
20 Et nous avons répondu à Monseigneur: Nous avons un vieux père et un cadet, qui lui est né danssa vieillesse; le frère de celui-ci est mort, il reste le seul enfant de sa mère et notre père l'aime!	20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.
21 Alors tu as dit à tes serviteurs: Amenez-le moi, que mon regard se pose sur lui.	21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
22 Nous avons répondu à Monseigneur: L'enfant ne peut pas quitter son père; s'il quitte son père,celui-ci en mourra.	22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
23 Mais tu as insisté auprès de tes serviteurs: Si votre plus jeune frère ne descend pas avec vous,vous ne serez plus admis en ma présence.	23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
24 Donc, lorsque nous sommes remontés chez ton serviteur, mon père, nous lui avons apporté lesparoles de Monseigneur.	24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 Et lorsque notre père a dit: Retournez pour nous acheter un peu de vivres,	25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
26 nous avons répondu: Nous ne pouvons pas descendre. Nous ne descendrons que si notre jeunefrère est avec nous, car il n'est pas possible que nous soyons admis en présence de cet homme sans que notreplus jeune frère soit avec nous.	26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us.
27 Alors ton serviteur, mon père, nous a dit: Vous savez bien que ma femme ne m'a donné que deuxenfants:	27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:
28 l'un m'a quitté et j'ai dit: il a été mis en pièces! et je ne l'ai plus revu jusqu'à présent.	28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:
29 Que vous preniez encore celui-ci d'auprès de moi et qu'il lui arrive malheur et vous feriezdescendre dans la peine mes cheveux blancs au shéol.	29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
30 Maintenant, si j'arrive chez ton serviteur, mon père, sans que soit avec nous l'enfant à l'âmeduquel son âme est liée,	30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;
31 dès qu'il verra que l'enfant n'est pas avec nous, il mourra, et tes serviteurs auront fait descendredans l'affliction les cheveux blancs de ton serviteur, notre père, au shéol.	31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
32 Et ton serviteur s'est porté garant de l'enfant auprès de mon père, en ces termes: Si je ne te leramène pas, j'en serai coupable envers mon père toute ma vie.	32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.
33 Maintenant, que ton serviteur reste comme esclave de Monseigneur à la place de l'enfant et quecelui-ci remonte avec ses frères.	33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.
34 Comment, en effet, pourrais-je remonter chez mon père sans que l'enfant soit avec moi? Je neveux pas voir le malheur qui frapperait mon père."	34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
