DOUAI-RHEIMSKING JAMES BIBLE
Rejoice not in ungodly children, if they be multiplied: neither be delighted in them, if the fear of God be not with them.1 Desire not a multitude of unprofitable children, neither delight in ungodly sons.
Trust not to their life, and respect not their labours.2 Though they multiply, rejoice not in them, except the fear of the Lord be with them.
For better is one that feareth God, than a thousand ungodly children.3 Trust not thou in their life, neither respect their multitude: for one that is just is better than a thousand; and better it is to die without children, than to have them that are ungodly.
And it is better to die without children, than to leave ungodly children.4 For by one that hath understanding shall the city be replenished: but the kindred of the wicked shall speedily become desolate.
By one that is wise a country shall be inhabited, the tribe of the ungodly shall become desolate.5 Many such things have I seen with mine eyes, and mine ear hath heard greater things than these.
Many such things hath my eyes seen, and greater things than these my ear hath heard.6 In the congregation of the ungodly shall a fire be kindled; and in a rebellious nation wrath is set on fire.
In the congregation of sinners a fire shall be kindled, and in an unbelieving nation wrath shall dame out.7 He was not pacified toward the old giants, who fell away in the strength of their foolishness.
The ancient giants did not obtain pardon for their sine, who were destroyed trusting to their own strength:8 Neither spared he the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for their pride.
And he spared not the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for the pride of their word.9 He pitied not the people of perdition, who were taken away in their sins:
He had not pity on them, destroying the whole nation that extolled themselves in their sine.10 Nor the six hundred thousand footmen, who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts.
So did he with the six hundred thousand footmen, who were gathered together in the hardness of their heart: and if one had been stiffnecked, it is a wonder if he had escaped unpunished:11 And if there be one stiffnecked among the people, it is marvel if he escape unpunished: for mercy and wrath are with him; he is mighty to forgive, and to pour out displeasure.
For mercy and wrath are with him. He is mighty to forgive, and to pour out indignation:12 As his mercy is great, so is his correction also: he judgeth a man according to his works
According as his mercy is, so his correction judgeth a man according to his works.13 The sinner shall not escape with his spoils: and the patience of the godly shall not be frustrate.
The sinner shall not escape in his rapines, and the patience of him that sheweth mercy shall not be put off.14 Make way for every work of mercy: for every man shall find according to his works.
All mercy shall make a place for every man according to the merit of his works, and according to the wisdom of his sojournment.15 The Lord hardened Pharaoh, that he should not know him, that his powerful works might be known to the world.
Say not: I shall be hidden from God. and who shall remember me from on high?16 His mercy is manifest to every creature; and he hath separated his light from the darkness with an adamant.
In such a multitude I shall not be known: for what is my soul in such an immense creation?17 Say not thou, I will hide myself from the Lord: shall any remember me from above? I shall not be remembered among so many people: for what is my soul among such an infinite number of creatures?
Behold the heaven, and the heavens of heavens, the deep, and all the earth, and the things that are in them, shall be moved in his sight,18 Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the deep, and the earth, and all that therein is, shall be moved when he shall visit.
The mountains also, and the hills, end the foundations of the earth: when God shall look upon them, they shall be shaken with trembling.19 The mountains also and foundations of the earth be shaken with trembling, when the Lord looketh upon them.
And in all these things the heart is senseless: and every heart is understood by him:20 No heart can think upon these things worthily: and who is able to conceive his ways?
And his ways who shall understand, and the storm, which no eye of man see?21 It is a tempest which no man can see: for the most part of his works are hid.
For many of his works are hidden: hut the works of his justice who shall declare? or who shall endure? for the testament is far from some, and the examination of all is in the end.22 Who can declare the works of his justice? or who can endure them? for his covenant is afar off, and the trial of all things is in the end.
He that wanteth understanding thinketh vain things: and the foolish, and erring man, thinketh foolish things.23 He that wanteth understanding will think upon vain things: and a foolish man erring imagineth follies.
Hearken to me, my son, and learn the discipline of understanding, and attend to my words in thy heart.24 by son, hearken unto me, and learn knowledge, and mark my words with thy heart.
And I will shew forth good doctrine in equity, and will seek to declare wisdom: and attend to my words in thy heart, whilst with equity of spirit I tell thee the virtues that God hath put upon his works from the beginning, and I shew forth in truth his knowledge.25 I will shew forth doctrine in weight, and declare his knowledge exactly.
The works of God are done in judgment from the beginning, and from the making of them he distinguished their parts, and their beginnings in their generations.26 The works of the Lord are done in judgment from the beginning: and from the time he made them he disposed the parts thereof.
He beautified their works for ever, they have neither hungered, nor laboured, and they have not ceased from their works.27 He garnished his works for ever, and in his hand are the chief of them unto all generations: they neither labour, nor are weary, nor cease from their works.
Nor shall any of them straiten his neighbour at any time.28 None of them hindereth another, and they shall never disobey his word.
Be not thou incredulous to his word.29 After this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.
After this God looked upon the earth, and filled it with his goods.30 With all manner of living things hath he covered the face thereof; and they shall return into it again.
The soul of every living thing hath shewn forth before the face thereof, and into it they return again.
