| 1 Or il arriva en ce temps-là que les Philistins s'assemblèrent pour faire la guerre. Le peuple d'Israël s'avança aussi contre les Philistins, et l'armée campa contre la pierre du Secours. Les Philistins vinrent à Aphec, | 1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek. |
| 2 et rangèrent leurs troupes contre Israël. (Or) La bataille s'étant donnée, les Israélites furent mis en fuite par les Philistins, qui, courant partout à travers champs, en tuèrent environ quatre mille dans ce combat. | 2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men. |
| 3 Lorsque le peuple fut revenu dans le camp, les anciens d'Israël dirent : Pourquoi le Seigneur nous a-t-il frappés aujourd'hui de cette plaie devant les Philistins ? Amenons ici de Silo l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur, et qu'elle vienne au milieu de nous, pour nous sauver de la main de nos ennemis. | 3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. |
| 4 Le peuple ayant donc envoyé à Silo, on en fit venir l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur des armées, assis sur les chérubins ; et les deux fils d'Héli, Ophni et Phinées, étaient avec l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu. | 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. |
| 5 (Et) Lorsque l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur fut venue dans le camp, tout le peuple d'Israël jeta un grand cri, qui retentit au loin. | 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. |
| 6 Les Philistins l'ayant entendu s'entredisaient : Quel est ce grand bruit de voix qui vient du camp des Hébreux ? Et ils apprirent que l'arche du Seigneur était venue dans le camp. | 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp. |
| 7 Les Philistins eurent donc peur, et ils dirent : Dieu est venu dans leur camp. Et ils gémirent en disant : | 7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. |
| 8 Malheur à nous ! car ils n'étaient pas dans une si grande joie hier et avant-hier. Malheur à nous ! Qui nous sauvera de la main de ces dieux si puissants (suprêmes) ? Ce sont ces dieux qui frappèrent l'Egypte de toute sorte de plaies dans le désert. | 8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. |
| 9 Mais prenez courage, Philistins, et agissez en hommes de cœur. Ne devenez point les esclaves des Hébreux, comme ils ont été les vôtres. Prenez courage et combattez (vaillamment). | 9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. |
| 10 Les Philistins donnèrent donc la bataille, et Israël fut défait. Tous s'enfuirent dans leurs tentes (tabernacles) ; et la perte fut si grande du côté des Israélites, qu'il demeura trente mille hommes de pied sur la place. | 10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. |
| 11 (De plus) L'arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d'Héli, Ophni et Phinées, furent tués. | 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. |
| 12 (Or) Le jour même, un homme de Benjamin échappé du combat vint en courant à Silo. Il avait ses vêtements déchirés, et sa tête couverte de poussière. | 12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head. |
| 13 Au moment où il arrivait, Héli était assis sur son siège et tourné vers le chemin ; car son cœur tremblait de crainte pour l'arche de Dieu. Cet homme, étant donc entré dans la ville, donna les nouvelles, et il s'éleva de grands cris dans toute la ville. | 13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out. |
| 14 Héli, ayant entendu le bruit de ces clameurs, demanda : Qu'est-ce que ce bruit confus (le bruit de ce tumulte) ? Alors le messager vint à Héli en grande hâte, et lui dit la nouvelle. | 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. |
| 15 Héli avait alors quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans ; ses yeux s'étaient obscurcis, et il ne pouvait plus (pas) voir. | 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. |
| 16 Et l'homme dit à Héli : C'est moi qui reviens de la bataille, et qui me suis échappé aujourd'hui du combat. Héli lui dit : Qu'est-il arrivé, mon fils ? | 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? |
| 17 Le messager lui répondit : Israël a fui devant les Philistins ; une grande partie du peuple a été taillée en pièces ; et même vos deux fils, Ophni et Phinées, ont été tués ; et l'arche de Dieu a été prise. | 17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. |
| 18 Lorsqu'il (cet homme) eut nommé l'arche de Dieu, Héli tomba de son siège à la renverse près de la porte, et s'étant fracassé la tête, il mourut. Il était vieux et très avancé en âge, et il avait jugé Israël pendant quarante ans. | 18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. |
| 19 La femme de Phinées, belle-fille d'Héli, était alors enceinte et sur le point d'enfanter ; et ayant appris que l'arche de Dieu avait été prise, et que son beau-père et son mari étaient morts, se trouvant surprise tout d'un coup par la douleur, elle se baissa et accoucha. | 19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. |
| 20 Et comme elle allait mourir, les femmes qui étaient auprès d'elle lui dirent : Ne crains point, car tu as enfanté un fils. Elle ne leur répondit rien, et ne fit pas attention. | 20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it. |
| 21 Mais (Et) elle nomma son fils Ichabod, en disant : Israël a perdu sa gloire (La gloire d'Israël a été transférée). En effet, l'arche de Dieu avait été prise, et son beau-père et son mari étaient morts ; | 21 And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. |
| 22 et elle dit qu'Israël avait perdu sa gloire, puisque (la gloire d'Israël a été transférée, car) l'arche de Dieu avait été prise. | 22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken. |
