| 1 Voici les peuples que le Seigneur laissa vivre, pour servir d'exercice et d'instruction aux Israélites, et à tous ceux qui ne connaissaient point les guerres des Chananéens ; | 1 These are the nations which the Lord left, so that by them he might instruct Israel and all who had not known the wars of the Canaanites, |
| 2 afin que (dans la suite) leurs enfants apprissent après eux à combattre contre leurs ennemis, et qu'ils s'accoutumassent à la guerre : | 2 so that afterward their sons might learn to contend with their enemies, and to have a willingness to do battle: |
| 3 les cinq princes (satrapes, note) des Philistins, tous les Chananéens, les Sidoniens et les Hévéens, qui habitaient sur le mont Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu'à l'entrée d'Emath. | 3 the five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who were living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath. |
| 4 Le Seigneur laissa ces peuples pour éprouver ainsi Israël, et pour voir s'il obéirait ou s'il n'obéirait pas aux commandements du Seigneur, qu'il avait donnés à leurs pères par (l'entremise de) Moïse. | 4 And he left them, so that by them he might test Israel, as to whether or not they would listen to the commandments of the Lord, which he instructed to their fathers by the hand of Moses. |
| 5 Les enfants d'Israël habitèrent donc au milieu des Chananéens, des Héthéens, des Amorrhéens, des Phérézéens, des Hévéens et des Jébuséens. | 5 And so, the sons of Israel lived in the midst of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. |
| 6 Ils épousèrent leurs filles, et donnèrent leurs filles en mariage à leurs fils, et ils adorèrent leurs dieux. | 6 And they took their daughters as wives, and they gave their own daughters to their sons, and they served their gods. |
| 7 Et ils firent le mal aux yeux du Seigneur ; et ils oublièrent leur Dieu, adorant les Baalim (Baals) et les Astaroth. | 7 And they did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they forgot their God, while serving the Baals and Ashtaroth. |
| 8 Le Seigneur, étant donc irrité contre Israël, les livra entre les mains de Chusan Rasathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, auquel ils furent assujettis pendant huit ans. | 8 And the Lord, having become angry with Israel, delivered them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Mesopotamia, and they served him for eight years. |
| 9 Et ils crièrent au Seigneur, et il leur suscita un sauveur qui les délivra : Othoniel, fils de Cénez, frère puîné de Caleb. | 9 And they cried out to the Lord, who raised up for them a savior, and he freed them, namely, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, a younger brother of Caleb. |
| 10 L'esprit du Seigneur fut en lui, et il jugea Israël. Et il se mit en campagne, et le Seigneur livra entre ses mains Chusan Rasathaïm, roi de Syrie, qu'il défit. | 10 And the Spirit of the Lord was in him, and he judged Israel. And he went out to fight, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Syria, and he overwhelmed him. |
| 11 (Et) Le pays demeura en paix durant quarante ans, et Othoniel, fils de Cénez, mourut. | 11 And the land was quiet for forty years. And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, died. |
| 12 Alors les enfants d'Israël recommencèrent à faire le mal aux yeux du Seigneur, qui fortifia contre eux Eglon, roi de Moab, parce qu'ils avaient péché devant lui. | 12 Then the sons of Israel resumed doing evil in the sight of the Lord, who strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against them because they did evil in his sight. |
| 13 Il joignit les enfants d'Ammon et d'Amalec à Eglon, qui, s'étant avancé avec eux, défit Israël et se rendit maître de la ville des Palmes. | 13 And he joined to him the sons of Ammon and the sons of Amalek. And he went forth and struck Israel, and he possessed the City of Palms. |
| 14 Les enfants d'Israël furent assujettis à Eglon, roi de Moab, pendant dix-huit ans. | 14 And the sons of Israel served Eglon, the king of Moab, for eighteen years. |
| 15 Après cela ils crièrent au Seigneur, et il leur suscita un sauveur nommé Aod, fils de Géra, fils de Jémini, qui se servait de la main gauche comme de la droite. Les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui des présents à Eglon, roi de Moab. | 15 And afterward, they cried out to the Lord, who raised up for them a savior, called Ehud, the son of Gera, the son of Benjamin, who used either hand as well as the right hand. And the sons of Israel sent gifts to Eglon, the king of Moab, by him. |
| 16 Aod se fit faire une dague (glaive) à deux tranchants, qui avait une garde de la longueur de la paume de la main, et il s'en ceignit sous sa tunique (son sayon) au côté (sur la cuisse) droit(e). | 16 And he made for himself a two-edged sword, having a handle, reaching to the middle, the length of the palm of a hand. And he was girded with it under his cloak, on the right thigh. |
| 17 Et il offrit les présents à Eglon, roi de Moab. Or Eglon était extrêmement gros. | 17 And he offered the gifts to Eglon, the king of Moab. Now Eglon was exceedingly fat. |
| 18 Et Aod, lui ayant offert les présents, s'en retourna vers ses compagnons qui étaient venus avec lui. | 18 And when he had presented the gifts to him, he followed out his companions, who had arrived with him. |
| 19 Puis étant revenu de Galgala, où étaient les idoles, il dit au roi : J'ai un mot à vous dire en secret, ô prince. Le roi fit signe qu'on se tût ; et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui étant sortis, | 19 And then, returning from Gilgal where the idols were, he said to the king, “I have a secret word for you, O king.” And he ordered silence. And when all those who were around him had departed, |
| 20 Aod s'approcha de lui. Il était alors seul assis dans sa chambre d'été. Et il lui dit : J'ai à vous dire une parole de la part de Dieu. Aussitôt le roi se leva de son trône. | 20 Ehud entered to him. Now he was sitting alone in a summer upper room. And he said, “I have a word from God to you.” And immediately he rose up from his throne. |
| 21 Et Aod étendit sa main gauche, tira la dague (le glaive) qu'il avait à son côté (de sa cuisse) droit(e), et la (le) lui enfonça si avant dans le ventre, | 21 And Ehud extended his left hand, and he took the dagger from his right thigh. And he thrust it into his abdomen |
| 22 que la poignée y entra tout entière avec le fer, et se trouva serrée par la grande épaisseur de graisse. Aod ne retira donc point sa dague ; mais, après avoir donné le coup, il la laissa dans le corps, et aussitôt les excréments qui étaient dans le ventre s'écoulèrent par les conduits naturels. | 22 so strongly that the handle followed the blade into the wound, and was enclosed by the great amount of fat. Neither did he withdraw the sword. Instead, he left it in the body just as he had struck with it. And immediately, by the private parts of nature, the filth of the bowels went out. |
| 23 Puis Aod, ayant fermé avec grand soin les portes de la chambre, | 23 Then Ehud carefully closed the doors of the upper room. And securing the bars, |
| 24 sortit par la porte de derrière. Cependant les serviteurs du roi, étant venus, trouvèrent la porte fermée, et ils dirent : Peut-être se soulage-t-il dans sa chambre d'été. | 24 he departed by a back exit. And the servants of the king, entering, saw that the doors of the upper room were closed, and they said, “Perhaps he is emptying his bowels in the summer room.” |
| 25 Et après avoir longtemps attendu jusqu'à en devenir tout honteux (troublés), voyant que personne n'ouvrait, ils prirent la clef, ouvrirent la chambre, et trouvèrent leur seigneur étendu mort sur la place. | 25 And after waiting a long time, until they were embarrassed, and seeing that no one opened the door, they took the key, and opening it, they found their lord lying dead on the ground. |
| 26 Pendant ce grand trouble où ils étaient, Aod s'échappa, et ayant passé le lieu des idoles, d'où il était revenu, il vint à Séirath. | 26 But Ehud, while they were in confusion, escaped and passed by the place of the idols, from which he had returned. And he arrived at Seirath. |
| 27 Aussitôt il sonna de la trompette sur la montagne d'Ephraïm, et les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec Aod, qui marchait à leur tête. | 27 And immediately he sounded the trumpet on Mount Ephraim. And the sons of Israel descended with him, he himself advancing at the front. |
| 28 Il leur dit : Suivez-moi, car le Seigneur a livré entre nos mains les Moabites nos ennemis. Les Israélites suivirent Aod, se saisirent des gués du Jourdain par où l'on passe au pays de Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne. | 28 And he said to them: “Follow me. For the Lord has delivered our enemies, the Moabites, into our hands.” And they descended after him, and they occupied the fords of the Jordan, which cross over to Moab. And they did not permit anyone to cross. |
| 29 Ils tuèrent environ dix mille Moabites, qui étaient tous des hommes forts et vaillants. Nul d'entre eux ne put échapper. | 29 And so, they struck down the Moabites at that time, about ten thousand, all strong and robust men. None of them were able to escape. |
| 30 (Ainsi) Moab fut humilié en ce jour-là sous la main d'Israël, et le pays demeura en paix pendant quatre-vingts ans. | 30 And Moab was humbled in that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was quiet for eighty years. |
| 31 Après Aod il y eut Samgar, fils d'Anath. Il tua six cents Philistins avec un soc de charrue, et il fut aussi le défenseur d'Israël. | 31 After him, there was Shamgar, the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred men of the Philistines with a plowshare. And he also defended Israel. |
