| 1 Maintenant, ô Israël, écoute les lois et les ordonnances que je t'enseigne ; afin que tu trouves la vie en les observant, et qu'étant entrés dans la terre que le Seigneur le Dieu de vos pères doit vous donner, tu la possèdes comme ton héritage. | 1 "And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I teach you, and do them; that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you. |
| 2 Vous n'ajouterez ni n'ôterez rien aux paroles que je vous dis. Gardez les commandements du Seigneur votre Dieu que je vous annonce de sa part. | 2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it; that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. |
| 3 Vos yeux ont vu tout ce que le Seigneur a fait contre Béelphégor, et de quelle manière il a exterminé du milieu de vous tous les adorateurs de cette idole ; | 3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor; for the LORD your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor; |
| 4 mais vous, qui vous êtes attachés au Seigneur votre Dieu, vous avez tous été conservés vivants jusqu'à ce jour. | 4 but you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive this day. |
| 5 Vous savez que je vous ai enseigné les lois et les ordonnances, selon que le Seigneur mon Dieu me l'a commandé ; vous les pratiquerez donc dans la terre que vous devez posséder ; | 5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land which you are entering to take possession of it. |
| 6 vous les observerez et vous les accomplirez effectivement (par vos œuvres). Car c'est en cela que vous ferez paraître votre sagesse et votre intelligence devant les peuples, afin qu'entendant parler de toutes ces lois, ils disent : Voilà un peuple (vraiment) sage et intelligent, voilà une nation grande (et illustre). | 6 Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' |
| 7 Il n'y a point en effet d'autre nation, quelque puissante qu'elle soit, qui ait des dieux aussi proches d'elle que notre Dieu est proche de nous et présent à toutes nos prières. | 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? |
| 8 Car où trouver un(e) autre peuple (nation) aussi célèbre, qui ait comme celui(le)-ci des cérémonies, des ordonnances pleines de justice, et toute une loi semblable à celle que j'exposerai aujourd'hui devant vos yeux ? | 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law which I set before you this day? |
| 9 Conserve-toi donc toi-même, et garde soigneusement ton âme. N'oublie point les grandes choses que tes yeux ont vues, et qu'elles ne s'effacent point de ton cœur tous les jours de ta vie. Enseigne-les à tes enfants (fils) et à tes petits-enfants (fils), | 9 "Only take heed, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children's children-- |
| 10 toutes ces choses qui se sont passées depuis le jour où tu te présentas devant le Seigneur ton Dieu, près de l'Horeb, lorsque le Seigneur me parla, et me dit : Fais assembler tout le peuple devant moi, afin qu'il entende mes paroles, et qu'il apprenne à me craindre tout le temps qu'il vivra sur la terre, et qu'il donne les mêmes instructions à ses enfants. | 10 how on the day that you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, 'Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children so.' |
| 11 Vous approchâtes alors du pied de cette montagne, dont la flamme montait (qui brûlait) jusqu'au ciel, et qui était environnée de ténèbres, de nuages et d'obscurités. | 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. |
| 12 (Et) Le Seigneur vous parla du milieu de cette flamme. Vous entendîtes la voix qui proférait ces paroles ; mais vous ne vîtes en lui aucune forme. | 12 Then the LORD spoke to you out of the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. |
| 13 Il vous fit connaître son alliance, qu'il vous ordonna d'observer, et les dix commandements, qu'il écrivit sur les deux tables de pierre. | 13 And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. |
| 14 Il m'ordonna en ce même temps de vous apprendre les cérémonies et les ordonnances que vous deviez observer dans la terre que vous allez posséder. | 14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land which you are going over to possess. |
| 15 Appliquez-vous donc avec grand soin à la garde de vos âmes. Vous n'avez vu aucune figure extérieure au jour où le Seigneur vous parla sur l'Horeb du milieu du feu ; | 15 "Therefore take good heed to yourselves. Since you saw no form on the day that the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, |
| 16 de peur qu'étant séduits, vous ne vous fassiez quelque image de sculpture, quelque figure d'homme ou de femme, | 16 beware lest you act corruptly by making a graven image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, |
| 17 ou de quelqu'une des bêtes qui sont sur la terre, ou des oiseaux qui volent sous le ciel, | 17 the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, |
| 18 ou des animaux qui rampent et se remuent sur la terre, ou des poissons qui sont sous la terre dans les eaux ; | 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. |
| 19 ou (de peur) qu'élevant tes yeux au ciel, et y voyant le soleil, la lune et tous les astres, tu ne tombes dans l'illusion et dans l'erreur, et que tu ne rendes un culte d'adoration à des créatures que le Seigneur ton Dieu a faites pour le service de toutes les nations qui sont sous le ciel. | 19 And beware lest you lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and worship them and serve them, things which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. |
| 20 Car, pour vous, le Seigneur vous a tirés et fait sortir de l'Egypte comme d'une fournaise où l'on fond le fer, pour avoir (en vous) un peuple où il établit son héritage, comme on le voit aujourd'hui. | 20 But the LORD has taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own possession, as at this day. |
| 21 Et le Seigneur, irrité contre moi à cause de vos murmures, a juré que je ne passerai pas le Jourdain, et que je n'entrerai point dans cet excellent pays qu'il doit vous donner. | 21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me on your account, and he swore that I should not cross the Jordan, and that I should not enter the good land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance. |
| 22 Je vais donc mourir en ce lieu-ci, et je ne passerai point le Jourdain ; mais vous, vous le passerez, et vous posséderez ce beau pays. | 22 For I must die in this land, I must not go over the Jordan; but you shall go over and take possession of that good land. |
| 23 Garde-toi d'oublier jamais l'alliance que le Seigneur ton Dieu a faite avec toi, et de te faire en sculpture l'image d'aucune des choses dont le Seigneur a défendu d'en faire ; | 23 Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make a graven image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you. |
| 24 parce que le Seigneur ton Dieu est un feu dévorant et un Dieu jaloux. | 24 For the LORD your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God. |
| 25 Si, après avoir eu des enfants et des petits-enfants, et être demeurés dans ce pays, vous vous laissiez séduire jusqu'à vous fabriquer quelque image sculptée, en commettant devant le Seigneur votre Dieu un crime qui attire sur vous sa colère, | 25 "When you beget children and children's children, and have grown old in the land, if you act corruptly by making a graven image in the form of anything, and by doing what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, so as to provoke him to anger, |
| 26 j'atteste aujourd'hui le ciel et la terre, que vous serez bientôt exterminés de ce pays que vous devez posséder après avoir passé le Jourdain. Vous n'y demeurerez pas longtemps, mais le Seigneur vous détruira ; | 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from the land which you are going over the Jordan to possess; you will not live long upon it, but will be utterly destroyed. |
| 27 il vous dispersera dans tous les peuples, et vous ne resterez qu'en petit nombre parmi les nations où le Seigneur vous aura conduits. | 27 And the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will drive you. |
| 28 (Et) Vous adorerez là des dieux qui ont été faits par la main des hommes : du bois et de la pierre, qui ne voient point, qui n'entendent point, qui ne mangent point, et qui ne sentent point. | 28 And there you will serve gods of wood and stone, the work of men's hands, that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. |
| 29 Si, dans ces lieux-là, tu cherches le Seigneur ton Dieu, tu le trouveras, pourvu toutefois que tu le cherches de tout ton cœur, et dans toute l'amertume et l'affliction de ton âme. | 29 But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. |
| 30 Après que tu te seras trouvé accablé de tous ces maux qui t'avaient été prédits, tu reviendras enfin (dans le dernier temps) au Seigneur ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix ; | 30 When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the LORD your God and obey his voice, |
| 31 parce que le Seigneur ton Dieu est un Dieu plein de miséricorde : Il ne t'abandonnera point, et ne t'exterminera point entièrement, et n'oubliera pas l'alliance qu'il a jurée, et qu'il a faite avec tes pères. | 31 for the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not fail you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers which he swore to them. |
| 32 Interroge les siècles les plus reculés qui ont été avant toi, et considère d'une extrémité du ciel jusqu'à l'autre, depuis le jour où le Seigneur créa l'homme sur la terre, s'il s'est jamais rien fait de semblable, et si jamais on a ouï dire | 32 "For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. |
| 33 qu'un peuple ait entendu la voix de Dieu qui lui parlait du milieu des flammes, comme tu l'as entendue sans avoir perdu la vie ; | 33 Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? |
| 34 qu'un (que) Dieu soit venu prendre pour lui un peuple au milieu des nations, en faisant éclater sa puissance par des miracles, par des prodiges, par des combats où il s'est signalé avec une main forte et un bras étendu, et par des visions horribles, selon tout ce que le Seigneur votre Dieu a fait pour vous dans l'Egypte, comme tu l'as vu de tes yeux ; | 34 Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? |
| 35 afin que tu reconnaisses que le Seigneur est le véritable Dieu, et qu'il n'y en a point d'autre que lui. | 35 To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides him. |
| 36 Il t'a fait entendre sa voix du haut du ciel pour t'instruire, et il t'a fait voir son feu sur la terre, un feu effroyable (très ardent), et tu as entendu sortir ces paroles du milieu du feu ; | 36 Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you; and on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. |
| 37 parce qu'il a aimé tes pères, et qu'après eux il a choisi pour lui leur postérité. Il t'a (re)tiré de l'Egypte en marchant devant toi avec sa grande puissance, | 37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their descendants after them, and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, |
| 38 pour exterminer à ton entrée de très grandes nations, qui étaient plus fortes que toi ; pour te faire entrer dans leur pays, et te faire posséder leur terre comme tu le vois toi-même aujourd'hui. | 38 driving out before you nations greater and mightier than yourselves, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day; |
| 39 Reconnais donc en ce jour, et que cette pensée soit toujours gravée dans ton cœur, que le Seigneur est l'unique Dieu, depuis le haut du ciel jusqu'au plus profond de la terre (sur terre en bas), et qu'il n'y en a point d'autre que lui. | 39 know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. |
| 40 Garde ses préceptes et ses commandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui, afin que tu sois heureux, toi et tes enfants après toi, et que tu demeures longtemps dans la terre que le Seigneur ton Dieu te donnera. | 40 Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the LORD your God gives you for ever." |
| 41 Alors Moïse désigna trois villes au deçà (au-delà) du Jourdain vers l'orient, | 41 Then Moses set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan, |
| 42 afin que celui qui aurait tué son prochain contre sa volonté, sans qu'il eût été son ennemi un ou deux jours auparavant, pût se retirer en quelqu'une de ces villes (, et y être en sureté). | 42 that the manslayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past, and that by fleeing to one of these cities he might save his life: |
| 43 Ces villes furent Bosor, dans le désert, située dans la plaine (plate campagne) qui appartient à la tribu de Ruben ; Ramoth de Galaad, qui est de la tribu de Gad ; et Golan de Basan, qui est de la tribu de Manassé. | 43 Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland for the Reubenites, and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites. |
| 44 C'est là la loi que Moïse proposa aux enfants d'Israël. | 44 This is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel; |
| 45 Ce sont là les préceptes, les cérémonies et les ordonnances qu'il prescrivit aux enfants d'Israël après qu'ils furent sortis d'Egypte, | 45 these are the testimonies, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke to the children of Israel when they came out of Egypt, |
| 46 au deçà (au-delà) du Jourdain, dans la vallée qui est vis-à-vis du temple de Phogor, au pays de Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habita à Hésébon, et qui fut défait par Moïse. Car les enfants d'Israël, après être sortis d'Egypte, | 46 beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. |
| 47 possédèrent ses terres et les terres d'Og, roi de Basan : c'étaient là les deux rois des Amorrhéens qui régnaient au deçà (au-delà) du Jourdain vers le levant, | 47 And they took possession of his land and the land of Og the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan; |
| 48 depuis Aroër, qui est située sur le bord du torrent de l'Arnon, jusqu'au mont Sion, qui s'appelle aussi Hermon, | 48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount Sirion (that is, Hermon), |
| 49 c'est-à-dire toute la plaine au deçà (au-delà) du Jourdain vers l'orient, jusqu'à la mer du désert, et jusqu'au pied du mont Phasga. | 49 together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah. |
