| 1 Et il arriva qu'un de ces jours-là, comme il enseignait le peuple dans le temple et lui annonçait l'Evangile, les princes des prêtres et les scribes survinrent avec les anciens, | 1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, |
| 2 et lui parlèrent en ces termes : Dites-nous par quelle autorité vous faites ces choses, ou quel est celui qui vous a donné ce pouvoir. | 2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? |
| 3 Jésus, répondant, leur dit : Je vous adresserai, moi aussi, une question. Répondez-moi : | 3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: |
| 4 Le baptême de Jean était-il du ciel, ou des hommes ? | 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? |
| 5 Mais ils pensaient en eux-mêmes, disant : Si nous répondons : Du ciel, il dira : Pourquoi donc n'avez-vous pas cru en lui ? | 5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not? |
| 6 Et si nous répondons : Des hommes, tout le peuple nous lapidera ; car il est persuadé que Jean était un prophète. | 6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. |
| 7 Ils répondirent donc qu'ils ne savaient d'où il était. | 7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. |
| 8 Et Jésus leur dit : Moi non plus, je ne vous dis pas par quelle autorité je fais ces choses. | 8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. |
| 9 Alors il se mit à dire au peuple cette parabole : Un homme planta une vigne, et la loua à des vignerons ; puis lui-même il fut pendant longtemps hors du pays. | 9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. |
| 10 Et, dans la saison, il envoya un serviteur vers les vignerons, pour qu'ils lui donnassent du fruit de la vigne. Après l'avoir battu, ils le renvoyèrent les mains vides. | 10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. |
| 11 Il envoya encore un autre serviteur ; mais ils le battirent aussi, et, après l'avoir accablé d'outrages, ils le renvoyèrent les mains vides. | 11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. |
| 12 Il envoya encore un troisième, qu'ils blessèrent aussi et chassèrent. | 12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. |
| 13 Alors le maître de la vigne dit : Que ferai-je ? J'enverrai mon fils bien-aimé ; peut-être, en le voyant, éprouveront-ils du respect. | 13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. |
| 14 Mais lorsque les vignerons le virent, ils pensèrent en eux-mêmes, et dirent : Celui-ci est l'héritier ; tuons-le, afin que l'héritage soit à nous. | 14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. |
| 15 Et l'ayant chassé hors de la vigne, ils le tuèrent. Que leur fera donc le maître de la vigne ? | 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? |
| 16 Il viendra, et il fera périr ces vignerons, et il donnera la vigne à d'autres. Ayant entendu cela, ils lui dirent : A Dieu ne plaise ! | 16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. |
| 17 Mais lui, les regardant, dit : Qu'est-ce donc que ceci qui est écrit : La pierre qu'ont rejetée ceux qui bâtissaient est devenue la tête de l'angle ? | 17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? |
| 18 Quiconque tombera sur cette pierre sera brisé ; et celui sur qui elle tombera, elle l'écrasera. | 18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. |
| 19 Les princes des prêtres et les scribes cherchaient à mettre les mains sur lui à cette heure même, mais ils craignirent le peuple : car ils avaient reconnu que c'était contre eux qu'il avait dit cette parabole. | 19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. |
| 20 Et l'épiant, ils envoyèrent des hommes artificieux, qui feindraient d'être justes, pour le surprendre dans ses paroles, afin de le livrer à l'autorité et à la puissance du gouverneur. | 20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. |
| 21 Et ils l'interrogèrent, en disant : Maître, nous savons que vous parlez et enseignez avec droiture, et que vous n'avez pas d'égard aux personnes, mais que vous enseignez la voie de Dieu dans la vérité. | 21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: |
| 22 Nous est-il permis de payer le tribut à César, ou non ? | 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? |
| 23 Considérant leur ruse, Il leur dit : Pourquoi me tentez-vous ? | 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? |
| 24 Montrez-moi un denier. De qui porte-t-il l'image et l'inscription ? Ils lui répondirent : De César. | 24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's. |
| 25 Alors il leur dit : Rendez donc à César ce qui est à César, et à Dieu ce qui est à Dieu. | 25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. |
| 26 Et ils ne purent rien reprendre dans ses paroles devant le peuple ; mais, ayant admiré sa réponse, ils se turent. | 26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. |
| 27 Quelques-uns des sadducéens, qui nient qu'il y ait une résurrection, s'approchèrent ensuite, et l'interrogèrent, | 27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, |
| 28 en disant : Maître, Moïse a écrit pour nous : Si le frère de quelqu'un, ayant une femme, meurt sans laisser d'enfants, son frère épousera sa femme, et suscitera une postérité à son frère. | 28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. |
| 29 Or il y avait sept frères ; et le premier épousa la femme, et mourut sans enfants. | 29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. |
| 30 Le second la prit, et mourut lui-même sans enfants. | 30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. |
| 31 Le troisième la prit aussi, et de même tous les sept ; et ils ne laissèrent pas de postérité, et ils moururent. | 31 And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. |
| 32 Enfin, après eux tous, la femme mourut aussi. | 32 Last of all the woman died also. |
| 33 A la résurrection donc, duquel d'entre eux sera-t-elle l'épouse ? car les sept l'ont eue pour femme. | 33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. |
| 34 Jésus leur dit : Les enfants de ce siècle se marient et sont donnés en mariage ; | 34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: |
| 35 mais ceux qui seront jugés dignes du siècle à venir et de la résurrection des morts ne se marieront pas, et ne prendront pas de femme ; | 35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: |
| 36 car ils ne pourront plus mourir, parce qu'ils sont égaux aux anges, et qu'ils sont fils de Dieu, étant fils de la résurrection. | 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. |
| 37 Mais que les morts ressuscitent, Moïse le montre lui-même, à l'endroit du buisson, lorsqu'il appelle le Seigneur le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaac, et le Dieu de Jacob. | 37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. |
| 38 Or Dieu n'est pas le Dieu des morts, mais des vivants ; car tous sont vivants pour lui. | 38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. |
| 39 Alors quelques-uns des scribes, prenant la parole, lui dirent : Maître, vous avez bien répondu. | 39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. |
| 40 Et ils n'osaient plus lui faire aucune question. | 40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. |
| 41 Mais il leur dit : Comment dit-on que le Christ est fils de David, | 41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son? |
| 42 puisque David lui-même dit dans le livre des Psaumes : Le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur : Assieds-toi à ma droite, | 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, |
| 43 jusqu'à ce que je fasse de tes ennemis l'escabeau de tes pieds ? | 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. |
| 44 David l'appelle donc Seigneur ; alors, comment est-il son fils ? | 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son? |
| 45 Tandis que tout le peuple l'écoutait, il dit à ses disciples : | 45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, |
| 46 Gardez-vous des scribes, qui affectent de se promener en robes longues, et qui aiment les salutations sur la place publique, les premières chaires dans les synagogues et les premières places dans les festins, | 46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; |
| 47 qui dévorent les maisons des veuves sous prétexte de longues prières. Ils recevront une condamnation plus sévère. | 47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. |
