| 1 (Or) Après ces choses, voici ce qui arriva. En ce même temps, Naboth le Jezrahélite possédait dans Jezrahel une vigne près du palais d'Achab, roi de Samarie. | 1 And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. |
| 2 Et Achab lui dit : Donne-moi ta vigne, afin que je puisse faire un jardin potager, car elle est près de ma maison ; et je t'en donnerai une meilleure, ou, si cela t'accommode mieux, je te la payerai en argent au prix qu'elle vaut. | 2 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money. |
| 3 Naboth lui répondit : Dieu me garde de vous donner l'héritage de mes pères. | 3 And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee. |
| 4 Achab revint donc chez lui indigné et plein de fureur, à cause de cette parole que Naboth le Jezrahélite lui avait dite : Je ne vous donnerai pas l'héritage de mes pères ; et se jetant sur son lit, il se tourna du côté de la muraille et ne mangea point (du pain, note). | 4 And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread. |
| 5 Jézabel sa femme vint auprès de lui et lui dit : Qu'est-ce que cela ? D'où vous vient cette tristesse ? Et pourquoi ne mangez-vous point (de pain) ? | 5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? |
| 6 Il lui répondit : J'ai parlé à Naboth de Jezrahel, et je lui ai dit : Donne-moi ta vigne, et je t'en donnerai l'argent ; ou, si tu le préfères, je t'en donnerai une meilleure pour celle-là. Et il m'a répondu : Je ne vous donnerai pas ma vigne. | 6 And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard. |
| 7 Jézabel sa femme lui dit : Votre autorité est grande, et vous gouvernez bien le royaume d'Israël. Levez-vous, mangez (du pain), et ayez l'esprit en repos ; c'est moi qui vous donnerai la vigne de Naboth le Jezrahélite. | 7 And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. |
| 8 Aussitôt elle écrivit, au nom d'Achab, une (des) lettre(s) qu'elle scella du sceau du roi, et qu'elle envoya aux anciens et aux premiers de la ville de Naboth qui demeuraient avec lui. | 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. |
| 9 (Or) Cette (Ces) lettre(s) étai(en)t conçue(s) en ces termes : Publiez un jeûne, et faites asseoir Naboth entre les premiers du peuple, | 9 And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: |
| 10 et subornez deux hommes sans conscience contre lui (fils de Bélial), et qu'ils portent un faux témoignage, en disant : Naboth a blasphémé contre Dieu et contre le roi ; qu'on le mène hors de la ville, et ensuite qu'il soit lapidé et mis à mort. | 10 And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. |
| 11 Les anciens et les premiers de la ville de Naboth, qui demeuraient avec lui, firent ce que Jézabel leur avait commandé, et ce que portait la lettre qu'elle leur avait envoyée. | 11 And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. |
| 12 Ils publièrent un jeûne, et firent asseoir Naboth entre les premiers du peuple ; | 12 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. |
| 13 et ayant fait venir deux hommes sans conscience (fils du diable), ils les firent asseoir vis-à-vis de lui. Et ces deux hommes diaboliques portèrent témoignage contre lui devant l'assemblée, en disant : Naboth a blasphémé Dieu et le roi. Ils le menèrent donc hors de la ville et le lapidèrent. | 13 And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. |
| 14 Ils envoyèrent aussitôt à Jézabel, pour lui dire : Naboth a été lapidé, et il est mort. | 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. |
| 15 Lorsque Jézabel eut appris que Naboth avait été lapidé et qu'il était mort, elle vint dire à Achab : Allez, et prenez pour vous la vigne de Naboth le Jezrahélite, qui n'a pas voulu se rendre à votre désir, ni vous la donner pour le prix qu'elle valait (de l'argent). Car Naboth n'est plus en vie, mais il est mort. | 15 And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. |
| 16 Quand Achab eut appris la mort de Naboth, il s'en alla (aussitôt) dans la vigne de Naboth le Jezrahélite pour en prendre possession. | 16 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. |
| 17 En même temps le Seigneur adressa sa parole à Elie le Thesbite, et lui dit : | 17 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, |
| 18 Lève-toi et descends au-devant d'Achab, roi d'Israël, qui est dans Samarie ; car le voilà qui va dans la vigne de Naboth pour en prendre possession. | 18 Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it. |
| 19 Et tu lui parleras en ces termes : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Tu as tué Naboth, et de plus tu t'es emparé de sa vigne (tu as pris possession). Et tu lui diras ensuite : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : En ce même lieu où les chiens ont léché le sang de Naboth, ils lécheront aussi ton sang. | 19 And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. |
| 20 Et Achab dit à Elie : En quoi (Est-ce que tu) m'as-tu trouvé ton ennemi ? Elie lui répondit : En ce que vous vous êtes vendu pour faire le mal aux yeux du Seigneur. | 20 And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD. |
| 21 (Voilà que) Je vais faire fondre des maux sur toi. Je te retrancherai, toi et ta postérité, de dessus la terre ; et je tuerai tous les mâles de la maison d'Achab (celui qui urine contre une muraille), et depuis le premier jusqu'au dernier dans Israël. | 21 Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, |
| 22 (Et) Je traiterai ta maison comme la maison de Jéroboam, fils de Nabath, et comme la maison de Baasa, fils d'Ahia, parce que tes actions ont irrité ma colère, et que tu as fait pécher Israël. | 22 And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin. |
| 23 Le Seigneur a prononcé aussi cet arrêt contre Jézabel : Les chiens mangeront Jézabel dans le champ de Jezrahel. | 23 And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. |
| 24 Si Achab meurt dans la ville, il sera mangé par les chiens ; et s'il meurt dans les champs, il sera mangé par les oiseaux du ciel. | 24 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat. |
| 25 Achab n'eut donc point son semblable en méchanceté, ayant été vendu pour faire le mal aux yeux du Seigneur ; car il y fut excité par Jézabel sa femme. | 25 But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up. |
| 26 Et il devint tellement abominable qu'il suivait les idoles des Amorrhéens, que le Seigneur avait exterminés de devant la face des fils d'Israël. | 26 And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. |
| 27 Lorsque Achab eut entendu ces paroles, il déchira ses vêtements, couvrit sa chair d'un cilice, jeûna et dormit vêtu d'un sac, et marcha la tête baissée. | 27 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. |
| 28 Alors le Seigneur adressa sa parole à Elie le Thesbite, et lui dit : | 28 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, |
| 29 N'as-tu pas vu Achab humilié devant moi ? Puis donc qu'il s'est humilié à cause de moi, je ne ferai point tomber pendant qu'il vivra les maux dont je l'ai menacé ; mais je les ferai tomber sur sa maison, sous le règne de son fils. | 29 Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house. |
