| 1 Or Adam connut Eve sa femme, et elle conçut et enfanta Caïn, en disant : Je possède un homme par la grâce de Dieu. | 1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. |
| 2 Elle enfanta de nouveau, et mit au monde son frère Abel. Or Abel fut pasteur de brebis, et Caïn agriculteur (laboureur). | 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. |
| 3 Or il arriva, longtemps après, que Caïn offrit au Seigneur des fruits de la terre en sacrifice (présent). | 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. |
| 4 Abel offrit aussi des premiers-nés de son troupeau, et de leur graisse (des plus gras). Et le Seigneur regarda (favorablement) Abel et ses présents. | 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: |
| 5 Mais il ne regarda point Caïn, ni ce qu'il lui avait offert. C'est pourquoi Caïn entra dans une très grande colère, et son visage en fut tout abattu. | 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. |
| 6 Et le Seigneur lui dit : Pourquoi es-tu en colère, et pourquoi ton visage est-il abattu ? | 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? |
| 7 Si tu fais bien, n'en seras-tu pas récompensé ? Et si tu fais mal, le péché ne sera-t-il pas aussitôt à ta porte ? Mais la concupiscence (qui t'entraîne vers lui) sera sous toi, et tu la domineras. | 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. |
| 8 Or Caïn dit à son frère Abel : Sortons dehors. Et lorsqu'ils furent dans les champs, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua. | 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. |
| 9 Le Seigneur dit à Caïn : Où est ton frère Abel ? Il lui répondit : Je ne sais. Suis-je le gardien de mon frère (, moi) ? | 9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? |
| 10 Le Seigneur lui repartit : Qu'as-tu fait ? La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre jusqu'à moi. | 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. |
| 11 Tu seras donc maintenant maudit sur la terre, qui a ouvert sa bouche, et qui a reçu de ta main le sang de ton frère. | 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; |
| 12 Quand tu l'auras cultivée, elle ne te rendra pas son fruit. Tu seras fugitif et vagabond sur la terre. | 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. |
| 13 Caïn répondit au Seigneur : Mon iniquité est trop grande pour que j'en obtienne le pardon. | 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. |
| 14 Vous me chassez aujourd'hui de dessus la terre, et je m'irai cacher de devant votre face. Je serai fugitif et vagabond sur la terre. Quiconque donc me trouvera, me tuera. | 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. |
| 15 Le Seigneur lui répondit : Non, cela ne sera pas ; mais quiconque tuera Caïn en sera puni sept fois. Et le Seigneur mit un signe sur Caïn, afin que ceux qui le trouveraient ne le tuassent point. | 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. |
| 16 Caïn, s'étant retiré de devant la face du Seigneur, fut vagabond sur la terre, et il habita vers la région orientale d'Eden. | 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. |
| 17 Et ayant connu sa femme, elle conçut et enfanta Hénoch. Et il bâtit une ville qu'il appela Hénoch, du nom de son fils. | 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. |
| 18 Or Hénoch engendra Irad, et Irad engendra Maviaël, et Maviaël engendra Mathusaël, et Mathusaël engendra Lamech, | 18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. |
| 19 qui eut deux femmes, dont l'une s'appelait Ada, et l'autre Sella. | 19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. |
| 20 Ada enfanta Jabel, qui fut père de ceux qui demeurent dans des tentes, et des pasteurs. | 20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. |
| 21 Son frère s'appelait Jubal : et il fut le père de ceux qui jouent de la harpe et de l'orgue. | 21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. |
| 22 Sella enfanta aussi Tubalcaïn, qui eut l'art de travailler avec le marteau, et qui fut habile en toutes sortes d'ouvrages d'airain et de fer. Noëma était (fut) la sur de Tubalcaïn. | 22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
| 23 Or Lamech dit à ses femmes Ada et Sella : Femmes de Lamech, entendez ma voix, écoutez ce que je vais dire : J'ai tué un homme pour ma blessure, et un jeune homme pour ma meurtrissure. | 23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. |
| 24 On vengera sept fois la mort de Caïn, et celle de Lamech soixante-dix (septante) fois sept fois. | 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. |
| 25 Adam connut encore sa femme, et elle enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Seth, en disant : Le Seigneur m'a donné un autre fils au lieu d'Abel, que Caïn a tué. | 25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. |
| 26 Il naquit aussi à Seth un fils, qu'il appela Enos. C'est lui qui commença d'invoquer le nom du Seigneur. | 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. |
