| 1 Un lévite qui demeurait à l'extrémité de la montagne d'Ephraïm, ayant épousé une femme de Bethléem de Juda, | 1 And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah. |
| 2 celle-ci le quitta; et elle revint à Bethléem dans la maison de son père, et elle demeura chez lui pendant quatre mois. | 2 And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months. |
| 3 Son mari vint la trouver, désireux de se réconcilier avec elle par de bonnes paroles et de la ramener chez lui; il avait avec lui un serviteur et deux ânes. Sa femme le reçut bien, et le fit entrer dans la maison de son père. Son beau-père l'ayant appris, et le voyant venir, alla au-devant de lui avec joie, | 3 And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him. |
| 4 et l'embrassa. Le gendre demeura dans la maison du beau-père pendant trois jours, mangeant et buvant familièrement avec lui. | 4 And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there. |
| 5 Le quatrième jour le lévite, se levant de bon matin, voulut partir; mais son beau-père le retint et lui dit: Prenez un peu de pain auparavant pour vous fortifier, et après cela vous vous mettrez en chemin. | 5 And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way. |
| 6 Ils s'assirent donc, et mangèrent et burent ensemble. Le beau-père dit ensuite à son gendre: Je vous prie demeurer encore ici aujourd'hui, afin que nous nous réjouissions ensemble. | 6 And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry. |
| 7 Le lévite, se levant, voulut partir; mais son beau-père le conjura avec tant d'instance, qu'il le fit demeurer chez lui. | 7 And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again. |
| 8 Le lendemain matin, le lévite se préparait à partir; mais son beau-père lui dit de nouveau: Je vous prie de prendre d'abord un peu de nourriture, afin qu'ayant pris des forces, vous partiez quand le jour sera plus avancé. Ils mangèrent donc ensemble; | 8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them. |
| 9 et le jeune homme se leva pour partir avec sa femme et son serviteur; mais son beau-père lui dit encore: Considérez que le jour baisse beaucoup, et que le soir approche; demeurez encore chez moi pour aujourd'hui, et réjouissons-nous: vous partirez demain pour retourner dans votre maison. | 9 And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home. |
| 10 Son gendre ne voulut point se rendre à ses paroles; mais il partit aussitôt, et vint près de Jébus, qui s'appelle aussi Jérusalem, menant avec lui ses deux ânes chargés et sa femme. | 10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him. |
| 11 Et comme ils étaient près de Jébus, et que le jour finissant, la nuit commençait, le serviteur dit à son maître: Allons, je vous prie, à la ville des Jébuséens, et demeurons-y. | 11 And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it. |
| 12 Son maître lui répondit: Je n'entrerai pas dans la ville d'un peuple étranger qui ne fait point partie des enfants d'Israël, mais je passerai jusqu'à Gabaa; | 12 And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah. |
| 13 et quand je serai arrivé là, nous y séjournerons, ou du moins dans la ville de Rama. | 13 And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah. |
| 14 Ils dépassèrent donc Jébus, et, continuant leur chemin, ils se trouvèrent au coucher du soleil près de Gabaa, qui est dans la tribu de Benjamin. | 14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin. |
| 15 Ils y allèrent pour y demeurer, et étant entrés, ils s'assirent dans la place de la ville, sans que personne voulût les loger chez lui. | 15 And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging. |
| 16 Mais sur le soir on vit venir un vieillard qui rentrait des champs après son travail; il était lui-même de la montagne d'Ephraïm, et il demeurait comme étranger dans la ville de Gabaa. Or les hommes de ce pays-là étaient enfants de Jémini. | 16 And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites. |
| 17 Le vieillard, levant les yeux, vit le lévite assis dans la place de la ville avec son bagage; et s'adressant à lui, il lui dit: D'où venez-vous et où allez-vous? | 17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? |
| 18 Le lévite lui répondit: Nous sommes partis de Bethléem de Juda, et nous retournons dans notre maison, qui est à l'extrémité de la montagne d'Ephraïm, d'où nous étions allés à Bethléem; nous allons maintenant à la maison de Dieu. et personne ne veut nous recevoir chez lui. | 18 And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house. |
| 19 Nous avons de la paille et du foin pour les ânes, du pain et du vin pour moi et pour votre servante et pour le serviteur qui est avec moi. Nous n'avons besoin de rien, sinon qu'on nous loge. | 19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing. |
| 20 Le vieillard lui répondit: La paix soit avec vous. Je vous donnerai tout ce qui vous est nécessaire; je vous prie seulement de ne pas demeurer sur cette place. | 20 And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. |
| 21 Les ayant donc fait entrer dans sa maison, il donna à manger aux ânes; et pour eux, après qu'ils eurent lavé leurs pieds, il leur servit un festin. | 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink. |
| 22 Tandis qu'ils faisaient bonne chère, et que, mangeant et buvant, ils donnaient quelque soulagement à leurs corps lassés par le travail du chemin, il vint des hommes de cette ville, qui étaient des enfants de Bélial, c'est-à-dire sans joug; et environnant la maison du vieillard, il commencèrent à frapper à la porte, criant au maître de la maison, et lui disant: Faites sortir cet homme qui est entré chez vous, afin que nous en abusions. | 22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. |
| 23 Le vieillard sortit dehors pour leur parler, et leur dit: Gardez-vous, mes frères, gardez-vous de faire un si grand mal; car j'ai reçu cet homme comme mon hôte, et cessez de penser à cette folie. | 23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly. |
| 24 J'ai une fille vierge, et cet homme a sa concubine; je les amènerai vers vous, et vous les aurez pour satisfaire votre passion; je vous prie de ne pas commettre à l'égard d'un homme ce crime contre nature. | 24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing. |
| 25 Mais le lévite, voyant qu'ils ne voulaient point se rendre à ses paroles, leur amena lui-même sa femme, et l'abandonna à leurs outrages; et ayant abusé d'elle toute la nuit, quand le matin fut venu, ils la laissèrent. | 25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. |
| 26 Lorsque les ténèbres de la nuit se dissipaient, cette femme vint à la porte de la maison où demeurait son mari, et y tomba étendue par terre. | 26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light. |
| 27 Le matin, son mari se leva et ouvrit la porte pour continuer son chemin, et il y trouva sa femme couchée par terre, ayant les mains étendues sur le seuil de la porte. | 27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. |
| 28 Il crut d'abord qu'elle était endormie, et il lui dit: Levez-vous, et allons-nous-en. Mais, comme elle ne répondait pas, il reconnut qu'elle était morte; et l'ayant prise, il la mit sur son âne, et s'en retourna dans sa maison. | 28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place. |
| 29 Et lorsqu'il fut arrivé chez lui, il prit un couteau, et divisa le corps de sa femme avec ses os en douze parts, et il envoya une part dans chacune des tribus d'Israël. | 29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel. |
| 30 Quand chacun eut vu cela, ils crièrent tous d'une voix: Jamais rien de tel n'est arrivé dans Israël, depuis le jour que nos pères sortirent de l'Egypte jusqu'à présent; prononcez là-dessus, et ordonnez ensemble ce qu'il faut faire. | 30 And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds. |
