| 1 Une grande préoccupation a été imposée à tous les hommes, et un joug pesant est sur les enfants d'Adam, depuis le jour où ils sortent du sein de leur mère jusqu'au jour de leur sépulture, où ils rentrent dans la mère commune. | 1 Great travail is created for every man, and an heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day that they go out of their mother's womb, till the day that they return to the mother of all things. |
| 2 Leurs pensées, les appréhensions de leur coeur, les réflexions qui les tiennent en suspens, et le jour de la mort les troublent tous, | 2 Their imagination of things to come, and the day of death, [trouble] their thoughts, and [cause] fear of heart; |
| 3 depuis celui qui est assis sur un trône de gloire, jusqu'à celui qui est couché sur la terre et dans la cendre; | 3 From him that sitteth on a throne of glory, unto him that is humbled in earth and ashes; |
| 4 depuis celui qui est vêtu de pourpre et qui porte la couronne, jusqu'à celui qui est couveert de toile grossière. Ce n'est que fureur, jalousie, inquiétude, agitation, crainte de la mort, colère perpétuelle et querelles. | 4 From him that weareth purple and a crown, unto him that is clothed with a linen frock. |
| 5 Sur leur couche même, au temps du repos, le sommeil de la nuit bouleverse leurs pensées. | 5 Wrath, and envy, trouble, and unquietness, fear of death, and anger, and strife, and in the time of rest upon his bed his night sleep, do change his knowledge. |
| 6 L'homme se repose si peu, que ce n'est rien, pour ainsi dire, et ensuite dans ses songes il est comme au jour où l'on monte la garde. | 6 A little or nothing is his rest, and afterward he is in his sleep, as in a day of keeping watch, troubled in the vision of his heart, as if he were escaped out of a battle. |
| 7 Les fantômes qu'il voit en son âme l'inquiètent; il est comme un homme qui fuit au jour du combat; au moment où il est sauvé il s'éveille, et il admire sa frayeur dénuée de fondement. | 7 When all is safe, he awaketh, and marvelleth that the fear was nothing. |
| 8 Ainsi en est-il de toute chair, depuis l'homme jusqu'à la bête, et c'est sept fois pire pour les pécheurs. | 8 [Such things happen] unto all flesh, both man and beast, and that is sevenfold more upon sinners. |
| 9 De plus, la mort, le sang, les querelles, le glaive, les oppressions, la famine, la ruine et les fléaux, | 9 Death, and bloodshed, strife, and sword, calamities, famine, tribulation, and the scourge; |
| 10 toutes ces choses ont été créées contre les méchants, et le déluge est arrivé à cause d'eux. | 10 These things are created for the wicked, and for their sakes came the flood. |
| 11 Tout ce qui vient de la terre retournera dans la terre; comme toutes les eaux rentrent dans la mer. | 11 All things that are of the earth shall turn to the earth again: and that which is of the waters doth return into the sea. |
| 12 Tout présent et toute iniquité périra; mais la foi subsistera éternellement. | 12 All bribery and injustice shall be blotted out: but true dealing shall endure for ever. |
| 13 Les richesses des injustes se dessécheront comme un torrent, et elles retentiront comme un grand tonnerre pendant la pluie. | 13 The goods of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, and shall vanish with noise, like a great thunder in rain. |
| 14 Celui qui ouvre ses mains se réjouira; mais les prévaricateurs périront à la fin. | 14 While he openeth his hand he shall rejoice: so shall transgressors come to nought. |
| 15 Les petits-enfants des impies ne multiplieront pas leurs rameaux; ils seront comme des racines gâtées qui s'agitent au sommet d'un rocher. | 15 The children of the ungodly shall not bring forth many branches: but are as unclean roots upon a hard rock. |
| 16 La verdure qui croît sur les eaux et au bord d'un fleuve sera arrachée avant toute autre herbe. | 16 The weed growing upon every water and bank of a river shall be pulled up before all grass. |
| 17 La bonté est comme un paradis de bénédictions, et la miséricorde durera éternellement. | 17 Bountifulness is as a most fruitful garden, and mercifulness endureth for ever. |
| 18 La vie de l'ouvrier qui se suffit à lui-même sera remplie de douceur, et en elle tu trouveras un trésor. | 18 To labour, and to be content with that a man hath, is a sweet life: but he that findeth a treasure is above them both. |
| 19 Des enfants et la fondation d'une ville perpétuent le nom; mais une femme sans tache l'emporte sur ces choses. | 19 Children and the building of a city continue a man's name: but a blameless wife is counted above them both. |
| 20 Le vin et la musique réjouissent le coeur; mais l'amour de la sagesse les surpasse l'un et l'autre. | 20 Wine and musick rejoice the heart: but the love of wisdom is above them both. |
| 21 La flûte et la harpe produisent une suave harmonie; mais la langue douce les surpasse l'une et l'autre. | 21 The pipe and the psaltery make sweet melody: but a pleasant tongue is above them both. |
| 22 La grâce et la beauté plaisent à ton regard; mais la verdure des champs les surpasse l'une et l'autre. | 22 Thine eye desireth favour and beauty: but more than both corn while it is green. |
| 23 L'ami et le compagnon se rencontrent dans l'occasion; mais une femme et un mari les surpassent l'un et l'autre. | 23 A friend and companion never meet amiss: but above both is a wife with her husband. |
| 24 Les frères sont un secours au temps de l'affliction; mais la miséricorde délivre encore plus qu'eux. | 24 Brethren and help are against time of trouble: but alms shall deliver more than them both. |
| 25 L'or et l'argent affermissent les pas; mais un sage conseil les surpasse l'un et l'autre. | 25 Gold and silver make the foot stand sure: but counsel is esteemed above them both. |
| 26 La richesse et la force exaltent le coeur; mais la crainte du Seigneur les surpasse l'une et l'autre. | 26 Riches and strength lift up the heart: but the fear of the Lord is above them both: there is no want in the fear of the Lord, and it needeth not to seek help. |
| 27 Rien ne manque à celui qui craint le Seigneur, et il n'a pas besoin de chercher du secours. | 27 The fear of the Lord is a fruitful garden, and covereth him above all glory. |
| 28 La crainte du Seigneur lui est comme un paradis de bénédiction, et on le couvre d'une gloire qui dépasse toute gloire. | 28 My son, lead not a beggar's life; for better it is to die than to beg. |
| 29 Mon fils, tant que tu vivras ne sois pas un mendiant, car il vaut mieux mourir que mendier. | 29 The life of him that dependeth on another man's table is not to be counted for a life; for he polluteth himself with other men's meat: but a wise man well nurtured will beware thereof. |
| 30 La vie de celui qui regarde à la table d'autrui n'est pas réellement une vie, car il se nourrit de mets étrangers; | 30 Begging is sweet in the mouth of the shameless: but in his belly there shall burn a fire. |
| 31 mais celui qui est bien réglé et instruit se gardera de cet état. | |
| 32 La mendicité peut avoir de la douceur dans la bouche de l'insensé; mais un feu brûlera dans ses entrailles. | |
