| 1 Mieux vaut le pauvre qui marche dans la simplicité que le riche qui a les lèvres perverses et qui est insensé. | 1 Better is the poor man, that walketh in his simplicity, than a rich man that is perverse in his lips, and unwise. |
| 2 Lorsque la science manque à l'âme, il n'y a pas de bien, et celui dont les peids se précipitent tombera. | 2 Where there is no knowledge of the soul, there is no good: and he that is hasty with his feet shall stumble. |
| 3 La folie de l'homme pervertit ses démarches, et il brûle en son coeur de colère contre Dieu. | 3 The folly of a man supplanteth his seeps: and he fretteth in his mind against God. |
| 4 Les richesses donnent beaucoup de nouveaux amis; mais ceux même qu'avait le pauvre se séparent de lui. | 4 Riches make many friends: but from the poor man, even they whom he had, depart. |
| 5 Le faux témoin ne demeurera pas impuni, et celui qui dit des mensonges n'échappera pas. | 5 A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. |
| 6 Beaucoup honorent la personne de l'homme puissant, et sont amis de celui qui donne des présents. | 6 Many honour the person of him that is mighty, and are friends of him that giveth gifts. |
| 7 Les frères du pauvre le haïssent, et de plus ses amis se retirent loin de lui. | 7 The brethren of the poor man hate him: moreover also his friends have departed far from him. He that followeth after words only, shall have nothing. |
| 8 Celui qui ne cherche que des paroles n'aura rien; mais celui qui possède son coeur aime son âme, et celui qui conserve la prudence trouvera le bien. | 8 But he that possesseth a mind, loveth his own soul, and he that keepeth prudence shall find good things. |
| 9 Le faux témoin ne sera pas impuni, et celui qui dit des mensonges périra. | 9 A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies, shall perish. |
| 10 Les délices siéent mal à l'insensé, et ce n'est pas à l'esclave à dominer sur les princes. | 10 Delicacies are not seemly for a fool: nor for a servant to have rule over princes. |
| 11 La science d'un homme se connaît par sa patience, et c'est sa gloire de ne pas tenir compte des injustices. | 11 The learning of a man is known by patience and his glory is to pass over wrongs. |
| 12 La colère du roi est comme le rugissement du lion, et la sérénité de son visage est comme la rosée sur l'herbe. | 12 As the roaring of a lion, so also is the anger of a king: and his cheerfulness as the dew upon the grass. |
| 13 Un insensé est la douleur de son père, et la femme querelleuse est comme un toit qui dégoutte toujours. | 13 A foolish son is the grief of his father: and a wrangling wife is like a roof continually dropping through. |
| 14 La maison et les richesses sont données par les parents; mais c'est spécialement du Seigneur que vient l'épouse prudente. | 14 House and riches are given by parents: but a prudent wife is properly from the Lord. |
| 15 La paresse produit l'assoupissement, et l'âme lâche aura faim. | 15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep, and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. |
| 16 Celui qui garde le commandement garde son âme; mais celui qui néglige sa voie sera frappé de mort. | 16 He that keepeth the commandment, keepeth his own soul: but he that neglecteth his own way, shall die. |
| 17 Celui qui a pitié du pauvre prête au Seigneur, qui lui rendra ce qu'il lui aura prêté. | 17 He that hath mercy on the poor, lendeth to the Lord: and he will repay him. |
| 18 Corrige ton fils, et n'en désespère pas; mais ne prends pas de résolution qui aille à samort. | 18 Chastise thy son, despair not: but to the killing of him set not thy soul. |
| 19 Celui qui est impatient en subira la peine, et lorsqu'il aura ravi quelque objet, il le rendra au double. | 19 He that is impatient, shall suffer damage: and when he shall take away he shall add another thing. |
| 20 Ecoute le conseil et reçois l'instruction, afin d'étre sage dans la suite de ta vie. | 20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayst be wise in thy latter end. |
| 21 Beaucoup de pensées s'agitent dans le coeur de l'homme; mais la volonté du Seigneur demeure ferme. | 21 There are many thoughts in the heart of a man: but the will of the Lord shall stand firm. |
| 22 L'indigent a de la compassion, et le pauvre vaut mieux que le menteur. | 22 A needy man is merciful: and better is the poor than the lying man. |
| 23 La crainte du Seigneur conduit à la vie, et elle demeurera dans l'abondance sans recevoir la visite du malheur. | 23 The fear of the Lord is unto life: and he shall abide in fulness without being visited with evil. |
| 24 Le paresseux cache sa main sous son aisselle, et il ne la porte pas même à sa bouche. | 24 The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth. |
| 25 Quand l'homme corrompu aura été châtié, l'insensé deviendra plus sage; mais si vous reprenez le sage, il comprendra la réprimande. | 25 The wicked man being; scourged, the fool shall be wiser: but if thou rebuke a wise man he will understand discipline. |
| 26 Celui qui afflige son père et met en fuite sa mère est infâme et malheureux. | 26 He that afflicteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is infamous and unhappy. |
| 27 Ne cesse pas, mon fils, d'écouter l'enseignement, et n'ignore point les paroles de la science. | 27 Cease not, O my son, to hear instruction, and be not ignorant of the words of knowledge. |
| 28 Le témoin injuste se rit de la justice, et la bouche des impies dévore l'iniquité. | 28 An unjust witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity. |
| 29 Les jugements sont préparés pour les moqueurs, et les marteaux pour frapper le corps des insensés. | 29 Judgments are prepared for scorners: and striking hammers for the bodies of fools. |
