| 1 Appelle donc à ton secours, s'il y a quelqu'un qui te réponde, et adresse-toi à quelqu'un des Saints. | 1 Call now if there be any that will answer thee, and turn to some of the saints. |
| 2 Certes, la colère fait mourir l'insensé, et l'envie tue les petits esprits. | 2 Anger indeed killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the little one. |
| 3 J'ai vu l'insensé aux solides racines, et j'ai maudit aussitôt son éclat. | 3 I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I cursed his beauty immediately. |
| 4 Ses enfants, loin de trouver le salut, seront foulés à la porte, et il n'y aura personne pour les délivrer. | 4 His children shall be far from safety, and shall be destroyed in the gate, and there shall be none to deliver them. |
| 5 L'affamé dévorera sa moisson, l'homme armé l'enlèvera lui-même, et ceux qui séchaient de soif boiront ses richesses. | 5 Whose harvest the hungry shall eat, and the armed man shall take him by violence, and the thirsty shall drink up his riches. |
| 6 Rien sur la terre ne se fait sans sujet, et ce n'est point de la terre que germe la douleur. | 6 Nothing upon earth is done without a voice cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground. |
| 7 L'homme est né pour la peine, comme l'oiseau pour voler. | 7 Man is born to labour and the bird to fly. |
| 8 C'est pourquoi je supplierai le Seigneur, et j'adresserai ma parole à Dieu, | 8 Wherefore I will pray to the Lord, and address my speech to God: |
| 9 qui fait des choses grandes et impénétrables, et des merveilles sans nombre; | 9 Who doth great things and unsearchable and wonderful things without number: |
| 10 qui répand la pluie sur la face de la terre, et qui arrose d'eau tout l'univers; | 10 Who giveth rain upon the face of the earth, and watereth all things with waters: |
| 11 qui exalte ceux qui sont abaissés; qui relève et guérit les affligés; | 11 Who setteth up the humble on high, and comforteth with health those that mourn. |
| 12 qui dissipe les pensées des méchants, et empêche leurs mains d'achever ce qu'elles avaient commencé; | 12 Who bringeth to nought the designs of the malignant, so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had begun: |
| 13 qui prend les sages dans leur propre ruse, et qui renverse les desseins des injustes. | 13 Who catcheth the wise in their craftiness, and disappointeth the counsel of the wicked: |
| 14 Durant le jour ils trouveront les ténèbres, et, comme si c'était la nuit, ils tâtonneront en plein midi. | 14 They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night. |
| 15 Mais Dieu sauvera le pauvre du glaive de leur langue, il le sauvera de la main du violent. | 15 But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent. |
| 16 Et il y aura de l'espérance pour le pauvre, et l'iniquité fermera sa bouche. | 16 And to the needy there shall he hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth. |
| 17 Heureux l'homme qui est châtié par Dieu. Ne rejette donc point la correction du Seigneur. | 17 Blessed is the mall whom God correcteth: refuse not therefore the chastising of the lord: |
| 18 Car c'est Lui qui blesse et qui donne le remède; Il frappe, et Ses mains guérissent. | 18 For he woundeth, and cureth: he striketh, and his hands shall heal. |
| 19 Il te délivrera dans six tribulations, et à la septième le mal ne te touchera pas. | 19 In six troubles he shall deliver thee, and in the seventh, evil shall not touch thee. |
| 20 Pendant la famine, il te sauvera de la mort, et, dans la guerre, du tranchant du glaive. | 20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in battle, from the hand of the sword. |
| 21 Il te mettra à couvert du fléau de la langue, et si l'affliction survient, tu ne la craindras pas. | 21 Thou shalt he hidden from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not fear calamity when it cometh. |
| 22 Tu riras des ravages et de la disette, et tu ne redouteras pas les bêtes de la terre. | 22 In destruction and famine then shalt laugh: and thou shalt not be afraid of the beasts of the earth. |
| 23 Mais tu feras alliance avec les pierres des champs, et les bêtes sauvages seront pacifiques pour toi. | 23 But thou shalt have a covenant with the stones of the lands, and the beasts of the earth shall be at pence with thee. |
| 24 Tu verras la paix régner dans ta tente, et, contemplant ta prospérité, tu la trouveras au complet. | 24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle is in peace, and visiting thy beauty thou shalt not sin. |
| 25 Tu verras aussi ta race se multiplier, et ta postérité croître comme l'herbe de la terre. | 25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be multiplied, and thy offspring like the grass of the earth. |
| 26 Tu entreras dans le sépulcre comblé de biens, comme un monceau de blé qu'on emporte en son temps. | 26 Thou shalt enter into the grave in abundance, as a heap of wheat is brought in its season. |
| 27 Voila le résultat de nos recherches, il en est ainsi; écoute-le, et repasse-le dans ton esprit. | 27 Behold, this is even so, as we have searched oat: which thou having heard, consider it thoroughly in thy mind. |
