| 1 Cependant Jacob, ayant entendu dire qu'on vendait du blé en Egypte, dit à ses enfants: Pourquoi cette négligence? | 1 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? |
| 2 J'ai appris qu'on vend du blé en Egypte; allez-y acheter ce qui nous est nécessaire, afin que nous puissions vivre et que nous ne mourions pas de faim. | 2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. |
| 3 Les dix frères de Joseph allèrent donc en Egypte pour y acheter du blé. | 3 And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. |
| 4 Jacob retint Benjamin avec lui, ayant dit à ses frères qu'il craignait qu'il ne lui arrivât quelque accident en chemin. | 4 But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him. |
| 5 Ils entrèrent dans l'Egypte avec les autres qui y allaient pour y acheter du blé; car la famine était dans le pays de Chanaan. | 5 And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. |
| 6 Or Joseph commandait dans toute l'Egypte, et le blé ne se vendait aux peuples que par son ordre. Ses frères s'étant prosternés devant lui, | 6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. |
| 7 Il les reconnut; et, leur parlant assez rudement, comme à des étrangers, il leur dit: D'où venez-vous? Ils lui répondirent: Du pays de Chanaan, pour acheter ici de quoi vivre. | 7 And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. |
| 8 Et quoi qu'il connût bien ses frères, il ne fut néanmoins pas reconnu d'eux. | 8 And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. |
| 9 Alors, se souvenant des songes qu'il avait eus autrefois, il leur dit: Vous êtes des espions, et vous êtes venus ici pour considérer les endroits les plus faibles de l'Egypte. | 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. |
| 10 Ils répondirent: Seigneur, cela n'est pas ainsi; mais vos serviteurs sont venus ici pour acheter du blé. | 10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. |
| 11 Nous sommes tous fils d'un même homme; nous venons avec des pensées de paix, et vos serviteurs n'ont aucun mauvais dessein. | 11 We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies. |
| 12 Il leur répondit: Non, cela n'est pas; mais vous étes venus pour remarquer ce qu'il y a de moins fortifié dans l'Egypte. | 12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. |
| 13 Ils lui dirent: Nous sommes douze frères, tous enfants d'un même homme du pays de Chanaan, et vos serviteurs. Le dernier est avec notre père, et l'autre n'est plus. | 13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not. |
| 14 Voilà, dit Joseph, ce que je disais: vous êtes des espions. | 14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies: |
| 15 Je m'en vais éprouver si vous dites la vérité. Vive le Pharaon! vous ne sortirez point d'ici jusqu'à ce que le dernier de vos frères y soit venu. | 15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither. |
| 16 Envoyez l'un de vous pour l'amener; pendant ce temps, vous demeurerez en prison jusqu'à ce que j'aie reconnu si ce que vous dites est vrai ou faux; autrement, vive le Pharaon! vous êtes des espions. | 16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. |
| 17 Il les fit donc mettre en prison pour trois jours. | 17 And he put them all together into ward three days. |
| 18 Et le troisième jour, il les fit sortir de prison et il leur dit: Faites ce que je vous dis, et vous vivrez; car je crains Dieu. | 18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God: |
| 19 Si vous venez ici dans un esprit de paix, que l'un de vos frères demeure enchaîné dans la prison; pour vous, allez-vous-en, emportez dans votre pays le blé que vous avez acheté, | 19 If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses: |
| 20 Et amenez-moi le dernier de vos frères, afin que je puisse reconnaître si ce que vous dites est véritable, et que vous ne mouriez point. Ils firent ce qu'il leur avait ordonné. | 20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so. |
| 21 Et ils se disaient l'un à l'autre: C'est justement que nous souffrons tout cela, parce que nous avons péché contre notre frère, et que, voyant l'angoisse de son âme lorsqu'il nous implorait, nous ne l'avons pas écouté; c'est pour cela que nous sommes tombés dans cette affliction. | 21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. |
| 22 Ruben, l'un d'entre eux, leur disait: Ne vous ai-je pas dit: Ne commettez pas un si grand crime contre cet enfant? et vous ne m'avez point écouté. C'est son sang maintenant que Dieu nous redemande. | 22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required. |
| 23 Ils ne savaient pas que Joseph les comprenait, parce qu'il leur parlait par un interprète. | 23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. |
| 24 Mais il s'éloigna quelques instants, et il pleura. Et étant revenu, il leur parla de nouveau. | 24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. |
| 25 Il fit prendre Siméon et le fit lier devant eux, et il commanda à ses officiers de remplir leurs sacs de blé, et de remettre l'argent de chacun dans son sac, en y ajoutant encore des vivres pour se nourrir pendant le chemin; ce qui fut exécuté aussitôt. | 25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them. |
| 26 Les frères de Joseph s'en allèrent donc, emportant leur blé sur leurs ânes. | 26 And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence. |
| 27 Et l'un d'eux ayant ouvert son sac dans l'hôtellerie, pour donner à manger à son âne, vit son argent à l'entrée du sac; | 27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth. |
| 28 Et il dit à ses frères: On m'a rendu mon argent; le voici dans mon sac. Ils furent tous saisis d'étonnement et de trouble, et ils s'entredisaient: Quelle est cette conduite de Dieu sur nous? | 28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us? |
| 29 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés chez Jacob, leur père, au pays de Chanaan, ils lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé, en disant: | 29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying, |
| 30 Le seigneur de ce pays-là nous a parlé durement, et il nous a pris pour des espions qui venaient observer le royaume. | 30 The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. |
| 31 Nous lui avons répondu: Nous sommes des gens paisibles, et très éloignés d'avoir aucun mauvais dessein. | 31 And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies: |
| 32 Nous étions douze frères, enfants d'un même père. L'un n'est plus, le plus jeune est avec notre père au pays de Chanaan. | 32 We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan. |
| 33 Il nous a répondu: Je veux éprouver s'il est vrai que vous n'ayez que des pensées de paix. Laissez-moi donc ici l'un de vos frères; prenez le blé qui vous est nécessaire pour vos maisons, et allez-vous-en; | 33 And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone: |
| 34 Et amenez-moi le plus jeune de vos frères, afin que je sache que vous n'êtes point des espions, que vous puissiez ensuite emmener avec vous celui que je retiens prisonnier, et qu'il vous soit permis à l'avenir d'acheter ici ce que vous voudrez. | 34 And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land. |
| 35 Cela dit, comme ils versaient leur blé, ils trouvèrent chacun leur argent lié à l'entrée du sac, et ils en furent tous épouvantés. | 35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. |
| 36 Alors Jacob, leur père, leur dit: Vous m'avez réduit à être sans enfants; Joseph n'est plus, Siméon est en prison, et vous voulez m'enlever Benjamin. Tous ces maux sont retombés sur moi. | 36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me. |
| 37 Ruben lui répondit: Faites mourir mes deux enfants, si je ne vous le ramène pas. Confiez-le moi, et je vous le rendrai. | 37 And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. |
| 38 Non, dit Jacob, mon fils n'ira point avec vous. Son frère est mort, et il est demeuré seul. S'il lui arrive quelque malheur au pays où vous allez, vous accablerez ma vieillesse d'une douleur qui m'emportera au tombeau. | 38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. |
