1 Tout en pleurs et prosterné devant le Temple de Dieu, Esdras faisait cette prière et cette confession; une foule très nombreuse d’Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants, se rassembla autour de lui: le peuple pleurait bruyamment.	1 While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
2 Chekanyas fils de Yéhiel, l’un des fils d’Élam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: “Nous avons trahi notre Dieu en prenant des femmes étrangères parmi les peuples du pays, mais il y a encore de l’espoir pour Israël.	2 And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: "We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
3 Nous allons nous engager devant notre Dieu, de façon solennelle, à renvoyer toutes nos femmes étrangères et les enfants qui en sont nés. Ainsi nous obéirons aux conseils de mon seigneur et de ceux qui craignent le commandement de notre Dieu. Oui, nous agirons selon la Loi!	3 Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
4 Lève-toi! Car la chose te regarde et nous sommes avec toi. Sois fort et mets-toi au travail.”	4 Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it."
5 Esdras se leva et fit jurer les chefs des prêtres et des lévites et tout Israël de faire comme on venait de le dire; ils le jurèrent.	5 Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.
6 Esdras quitta le Temple de Dieu et alla dans la chambre de Yohanan, fils d’Élyachib, il passa là toute la nuit sans manger de pain et sans boire d’eau, car il était dans la tristesse à cause de l’infidélité des exilés.	6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water; for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.
7 On proclama un avis dans Juda et dans Jérusalem à l’attention de tous ceux qui avaient été déportés: ils devaient se rassembler à Jérusalem.	7 And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem,
8 Si quelqu’un ne venait pas dans les trois jours - c’était l’avis des chefs et des anciens -, tous ses biens seraient voués à l’anathème et lui-même serait rejeté de la communauté des déportés.	8 and that if any one did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles.
9 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent donc à Jérusalem le troisième jour; c’était le 20 du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple s’assit sur la place devant le Temple de Dieu. Les gens tremblaient à cause des événements, mais aussi parce qu’il pleuvait.	9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.
10 Alors le prêtre Esdras se leva et leur dit: “Vous avez été infidèles, vous avez épousé des femmes étrangères et vous avez augmenté la faute d’Israël.	10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have trespassed and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel.
11 Mais maintenant, confessez la vérité devant Yahvé, le Dieu de vos pères et faites ce qu’il vous demande: séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.”	11 Now then make confession to the LORD the God of your fathers, and do his will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
12 Toute l’assemblée répondit d’une voix forte: “Tu as bien dit, il ne nous reste qu’à le faire.	12 Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, "It is so; we must do as you have said.
13 Mais le peuple est nombreux et nous sommes à la saison des pluies, nous ne pouvons rester dehors et l’affaire ne se réglera pas en un jour ou deux. Nous sommes en effet nombreux à avoir commis ce péché.	13 But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a work for one day or for two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
14 Que nos chefs restent là pour toute la durée de l’assemblée: tous ceux qui dans nos villes ont épousé des femmes étrangères, viendront à la date qu’on leur fixera, et avec eux viendront les anciens de chaque ville et les juges, jusqu’à ce que l’on ait écarté de nous la colère de notre Dieu à ce sujet.”	14 Let our officials stand for the whole assembly; let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, till the fierce wrath of our God over this matter be averted from us."
15 Seuls Yonathan, fils d’Azaël, et Yahzéyas, fils de Tikva, furent opposés à cette façon de faire; Méchoullam et le lévite Chabtaï les soutenaient.	15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullum and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.
16 Mais les exilés firent comme on l’avait proposé; le prêtre Esdras choisit pour chaque maison des chefs de famille nommément désignés. Ils commencèrent à siéger le premier jour du dixième mois, pour examiner les cas,	16 Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of fathers' houses, according to their fathers' houses, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter;
17 et au premier jour du premier mois ils avaient achevé de régler le problème de ceux qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères.	17 and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.
18 Voici pour les prêtres la liste de ceux qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères: parmi les fils de Josué, fils de Yosadak et parmi ses frères: Maaséyas, Éliézer, Yarib et Guédalyas.	18 Of the sons of the priests who had married foreign women were found Ma-aseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren.
19 Ils firent le serment de renvoyer leurs femmes et d’offrir un bélier en sacrifice de réparation pour leur péché;	19 They pledged themselves to put away their wives, and their guilt offering was a ram of the flock for their guilt.
20 parmi les fils d’Immer: Hanani et Zébadya;	20 Of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.
21 parmi les fils de Harim: Maaséyas, Éliya, Chémayas, Yéhiel et Ouziya;	21 Of the sons of Harim: Ma-aseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.
22 parmi les fils de Pachéhour: Élyoénaï, Maaséyas, Ismaël, Nétanéel, Yozabad et Éléasa;	22 Of the sons of Pashhur: Eli-o-enai, Ma-aseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 parmi les lévites: Yozabad, Chiméï, Kélaya - le même que Kélita -, Petahya, Yéhouda et Éliézer;	23 Of the Levites: Jozabad, Shime-i, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Petha-hiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24 parmi les chantres: Élyachib et Zakour; parmi les portiers: Challoum, Télem et Ouri;	24 Of the singers: Eliashib. Of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.
25 et parmi les Israélites: des fils de Paréoch: Ramyas, Yiziyas, Malkiyas, Miyamin, Éléazar, Malkiyas et Bénayas;	25 And of Israel: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Hashabiah, and Benaiah.
26 des fils d’Élam: Mattanyas, Zékaryas, Yehiel, Abdi, Yérémot et Éliya;	26 Of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah.
27 des fils de Zattou: Élyoénaï, Élyachib, Mattanyas, Yérémot, Zabad et Aziza;	27 Of the sons of Zattu: Eli-o-enai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza.
28 des fils de Bébaï: Yohanan, Hananyas, Zabaï, Atlaï;	28 Of the sons of Bebai were Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.
29 des fils de Bigvaï: Méchoullam, Malouk, Yédaya, Yachoub, Yichal, Yérémot;	29 Of the sons of Bani were Meshullum, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Jeremoth.
30 des fils de Pahat-Moab: Adna, Kelal, Bénayas, Maaséyas, Mattanyas, Besaléel, Binnouï et Menassé;	30 Of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Ma-aseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh.
31 des fils de Harim: Éliézer, Yichiya, Malkiyas, Chémayas, Chiméon,	31 Of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shime-on,
32 Binyamin, Malouk, Chémarya;	32 Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.

43 des fils de Nébo: Yeïel, Mattityas, Zabad, Zebina, Yaddaï, Yoël, Bénayas.	43 Of the sons of Nebo: Je-iel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah.
44 Tous ceux-là avaient épousé des femmes étrangères, ils les renvoyèrent avec leurs enfants.	44 All these had married foreign women, and they put them away with their children.
