DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
And his brethren said to him: Pass from hence, and go into Judea; that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou dost.3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
For there is no man that doth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, manifest thyself to the world.4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
For neither did his brethren believe in him.5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
Then Jesus said to them: My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth: because I give testimony of it, that the works thereof are evil.7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
Go you up to this festival day, but I go not up to this festival day: because my time is not accomplished.8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
When he had said these things, he himself stayed in Galilee.9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
But after his brethren were gone up, then he also went up to the feast, not openly, but, as it were, in secret.10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
The Jews therefore sought him on the festival day, and said: Where is he?11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
And there was much murmuring among the multitude concerning him. For some said: He is a good man. And others said: No, but he seduceth the people.12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
Yet no man spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
And the Jews wondered, saying: How doth this man know letters, having never learned?15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
If any man do the will of him; he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and there is no injustice in him.18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
Did Moses not give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law?19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
Why seek you to kill me? The multitude answered, and said: Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to kill thee?20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
Jesus answered, and said to them: One work I have done; and you all wonder:21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
Therefore, Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and on the sabbath day you circumcise a man.22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are you angry at me because I have healed the whole man on the sabbath day?23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge just judgment.24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
Some therefore of Jerusalem said: Is not this he whom they seek to kill?25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
And behold, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers known for a truth, that this is the Christ?26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
But we know this man, whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching, and saying: You both know me, and you know whence I am: and I am not come of myself; but he that sent me, is true, whom you know not.28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me.29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
They sought therefore to apprehend him: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
But of the people many believed in him, and said: When the Christ cometh, shall he do more miracles, than these which this man doth?31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
The Pharisees heard the people murmuring these things concerning him: and the rulers and Pharisees sent ministers to apprehend him.32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while I am with you: and then I go to him that sent me.33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
You shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither you cannot come.34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
The Jews therefore said among themselves: Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
What is this saying that he hath said: You shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, you cannot come?36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
And on the last, and great day of the festivity, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink.37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
He that believeth in me, as the scripture saith, Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
Now this he said of the Spirit which they should receive, who believed in him: for as yet the Spirit was not given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Of that multitude therefore, when they had heard these words of his, some said: This is the prophet indeed.40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
Others said: This is the Christ. But some said: Doth the Christ come out of Galilee?41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
Doth not the scripture say: That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem the town where David was?42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
So there arose a dissension among the people because of him.43 So the people could not agree about him.
And some of them would have apprehended him: but no man laid hands on him.44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
The ministers therefore came to the chief priests and the Pharisees. And they said to them: Why have you not brought him?45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
The ministers answered: Never did man speak like this man.46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
The Pharisees therefore answered them: Are you also seduced?47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
Hath any one of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees?48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
But this multitude, that knoweth not the law, are accursed.49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
Nicodemus said to them, (he that came to him by night, who was one of them:)50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
Doth our law judge any man, unless it first hear him, and know what he doth?51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
They answered, and said to him: Art thou also a Galilean? Search the scriptures, and see, that out of Galilee a prophet riseth not.52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
And every man returned to his own house.53 They al went home,
