| 1 El pueblo entero se reunió como un solo hombre en la plaza que está delante de la Puerta del Agua y dijeron a Esdras, el escriba, que trajese el libro de la ley de Moisés que el Señor había dado a Israel. | 1 And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had given to Israel. |
| 2 El día primero del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras trajo el libro de la ley ante la comunidad: hombres, mujeres y cuantos tenían uso de razón. | 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month. |
| 3 Leyó el libro en la plaza que está delante de la Puerta del Agua, desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, ante los hombres, las mujeres y los que tenían uso de razón. Todo el pueblo escuchaba con atención la lectura del libro de la ley. | 3 And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. |
| 4 El escriba Esdras se puso en pie sobre una tribuna de madera levantada para la ocasión. Estaban a su derecha Matitías, Semá, Ananías, Urías, Jelcías y Maasías; y a su izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Jasún, Jasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulán. | 4 And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden pulpit which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Ma-aseiah on his right hand; and Pedaiah, Misha-el, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. |
| 5 Esdras abrió el libro en presencia de todo el pueblo, de modo que toda la multitud podía verlo; al abrirlo, el pueblo entero se puso de pie. | 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people; and when he opened it all the people stood. |
| 6 Esdras bendijo al Señor, el Dios grande, y todo el pueblo respondió con las manos levantadas: «Amén, amén». Luego se inclinaron y adoraron al Señor, rostro en tierra. | 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God; and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen," lifting up their hands; and they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. |
| 7 Los levitas Josué, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabtay, Hodiyías, Maasías, Quelitá, Azarías, Yozabad, Janán y Pelaías explicaron la ley al pueblo, que permanecía en pie. | 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Ma-aseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the law, while the people remained in their places. |
| 8 Leyeron el libro de la ley de Dios con claridad y explicando su sentido, de modo que entendieran la lectura. | 8 And they read from the book, from the law of God, clearly; and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. |
| 9 Entonces el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y escriba Esdras, y los levitas que instruían al pueblo dijeron a toda la asamblea: «Este día está consagrado al Señor, vuestro Dios. No estéis tristes ni lloréis» (y es que todo el pueblo lloraba al escuchar las palabras de la ley). | 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep." For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. |
| 10 Nehemías les dijo: «Id, comed buenos manjares y bebed buen vino, e invitad a los que no tienen nada preparado, pues este día está consagrado al Señor. ¡No os pongáis tristes; el gozo del Señor es vuestra fuerza!». | 10 Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." |
| 11 También los levitas tranquilizaban a todo el pueblo, diciendo: «¡Callad, no estéis tristes, porque este día es santo!». | 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, "Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved." |
| 12 Así que el pueblo entero se fue a comer y beber, a invitar a los demás y a celebrar una gran fiesta, porque habían comprendido lo que les habían enseñado. | 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. |
| 13 El segundo día, los cabezas de familia de todo el pueblo, los sacerdotes y los levitas se reunieron con el escriba Esdras para escuchar atentamente las palabras de la ley. | 13 On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the law. |
| 14 Encontraron escrito en la ley que el Señor había prescrito por medio de Moisés que los hijos de Israel deberían vivir en cabañas durante la fiesta del mes séptimo. | 14 And they found it written in the law that the LORD had commanded by Moses that the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, |
| 15 Así pues, publicaron y pregonaron por todas sus ciudades y en Jerusalén un bando que decía: «Id al monte y traed ramos de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de mirto, de palmera y de otros árboles frondosos para hacer cabañas, como está prescrito». | 15 and that they should publish and proclaim in all their towns and in Jerusalem, "Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written." |
| 16 El pueblo salió, trajo los ramos y cada cual se hizo su cabaña; unos en su propio terrado, otros en sus patios, en los atrios del templo de Dios, en la plaza de la Puerta del Agua y en la plaza de la Puerta de Efraín. | 16 So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. |
| 17 Toda la comunidad de los repatriados hizo cabañas y se instaló en ellas. Desde los tiempos de Josué, hijo de Nun, no habían hecho una cosa así los hijos de Israel hasta aquel día. Y la alegría fue inmensa. | 17 And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and dwelt in the booths; for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. |
| 18 Esdras leyó el libro de la ley de Dios a diario, desde el primer día hasta el último. La fiesta duró siete días y el octavo se celebró la fiesta solemne de clausura, según la costumbre. | 18 And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance. |
