1 Une bonne réputation vaut plus qu’un bon parfum: le jour de la mort passe donc avant celui de la naissance.	1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.
2 Va à la maison du deuil plutôt qu’à la maison en fête: tu y verras la fin de tout homme, et pour le vivant il est bon d’y réfléchir.	2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.
3 Mieux vaut le chagrin que le rire: la tristesse sur le visage promet un cœur meilleur.	3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.
4 La maison du deuil retient l’attention des sages, la maison en fête capte l’attention des sots.	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.
5 Sois l’homme qui écoute la réprimande d’un sage et non celui qui suit la chanson des sots;	5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.
6 le sot a ri: crépitement de ronces brûlant sous la marmite. Voilà encore une chose déroutante:	6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.
7 la corruption pervertit même le sage, les cadeaux étouffent sa conscience.	7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.
8 Mener à bien une entreprise vaut mieux que la commencer: c’est la persévérance qui compte, et non la prétention.	8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.
9 Ne laisse pas ton esprit céder à la colère: la colère s’installe chez le sot.	9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.
10 Ne dis pas: “Comment étaient les temps anciens? Sûrement meilleurs que ceux d’aujourd’hui.” Ce n’est pas la sagesse qui te fait poser cette question.	10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.
11 La sagesse est utile pour celui qui a des terres: combien plus pour ceux qui voient le soleil!	11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.
12 La sagesse est une protection, tout comme l’argent; mais l’avantage du savoir, c’est que la sagesse donne la vie à ceux qui la possèdent.	12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.
13 Regarde l’œuvre de Dieu: qui pourrait redresser ce qu’il a courbé?	13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?
14 Aux jours heureux goûte le bonheur, et au jour du malheur, ouvre les yeux: Dieu les a disposés l’un et l’autre de telle sorte que personne ne peut savoir ce que sera sa fin.	14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.
15 J’ai vu de tout durant mes jours, en cette vie ou l’on n’a prise sur rien: il y a des justes qui périssent, malgré leur justice, et des méchants qui prolongent leurs jours, en dépit de leur méchanceté.	15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.
16 Ne sois pas juste à l’excès, et ne fais pas le sage plus qu’il ne faut: tu pourrais te démolir.	16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?
17 Ne sois pas méchant à l’excès et ne te conduis pas comme un insensé: tu pourrais mourir avant l’heure.	17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?
18 Il est bon de prendre un parti sans renoncer tout à fait à l’autre: celui qui craint Dieu tirera profit de l’un et de l’autre.	18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.
19 La sagesse rend le sage plus fort que les dix chefs dans leur cité.	19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.
20 Il n’y a sur terre aucun homme assez juste pour faire le bien sans jamais pécher.	20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.
21 Ne prête donc pas attention à tout ce que l’on raconte: ainsi tu n’entendras pas ton serviteur dire du mal de toi.	21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.
22 Toi-même d’ailleurs, tu le sais bien, tu as souvent dit du mal des autres.	22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.
23 Tout cela, je l’ai expérimenté: c’est une question de sagesse. Je m’étais dit: “Je veux être un sage.” Mais elle était si loin de moi!	23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!
24 Elle est au-delà de tout ce qui existe.	24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?
25 Quand je me suis appliqué à savoir, à approfondir, à chercher la sagesse et le pourquoi des choses, j’ai reconnu que la méchanceté est une sottise et une folie.	25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.
26 J’ai tiré cette conclusion que la femme est plus amère que la mort: elle est pour l’homme un piège, son cœur est un filet et ses bras, des chaînes. Celui qui plaît à Dieu lui échappe, mais le pécheur s’y fait prendre.	26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.
27 Voilà ce que j’ai trouvé - disait Qohélet - réfléchissant sur toutes choses, l’une après l’autre, pour comprendre.	27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,
28 Cependant je cherche encore: un homme entre mille, je l’ai trouvé, mais une femme dans tout le nombre, je ne l’ai pas trouvée.	28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.
29 Et voilà encore ce que j’ai vu: l’être humain, Dieu l’a fait simple, mais eux, ils se sont cherché mille problèmes.	29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.
