1 Allora Paolo, fissato lo sguardo sul Sinedrio, disse: Fratelli miei, io son vissuto in tutta buona coscienza dinanzi a Dio fino a questo giorno.	1 Then Paul, gazing intently at the council, said, “Noble brothers, I have spoken with all good conscience before God, even to this present day.”
2 Ma il sommo sacerdote Anania comandò ai circostanti che lo percuotessero nella bocca.	2 And the high priest, Ananias, instructed those who were standing nearby to strike him on the mouth.
3 Allora Paolo gli disse: Dio percuoterà te, muraglia imbiancata. Tu che siedi a giudicarmi secondo la legge, contro la legge ordini che io sia percosso.	3 Then Paul said to him: “God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! For would you sit and judge me according to the law, when, contrary to the law, you order me to be struck?”
4 Ma i circostanti dissero: Tu oltraggi il sommo sacerdote di Dio.	4 And those who were standing nearby said, “Are you speaking evil about the high priest of God?”
5 E Paolo disse: Fratelli, io non sapeva essere lui il sommo sacerdote; poiché sta scritto: Non oltraggerai il principe del tuo popolo.	5 And Paul said: “I did not know, brothers, that he is the high priest. For it is written: ‘You shall not speak evil of the leader of your people.’ ”
6 Or Paolo, sapendo come una parte erano Sadducei e altra Farisei, disse ad alta voce nel concilio: Fratelli, sono fariseo, figlio di farisei e son chiamato in giudizio a cagione della speranza nella risurrezione dei morti.	6 Now Paul, knowing that one group were Sadducees and the other were Pharisees, exclaimed in the council: “Noble brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees! It is over the hope and resurrection of the dead that I am being judged.”
7 Come ebbe detto questo, nacque disparere tra i Farisei e i Sadducei e l'assemblea fu divisa.	7 And when he had said this, a dissension occurred between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. And the multitude was divided.
8 I Sadducei infatti negavano esserci risurrezione, angeli e spiriti; i Farisei invece sostenevano le due cose.	8 For the Sadducees claim that there is no resurrection, and neither angels, nor spirits. But the Pharisees confess both of these.
9 E vi furono clamori grandi. E alzatisi, alcuni dei Farisei contendevano dicendo: Non troviamo alcun male in quest'uomo, chi sa se uno spirito o un Angelo gli abbia parlato?	9 Then there occurred a great clamor. And some of the Pharisees, rising up, were fighting, saying: “We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?”
10 E, sortane una gran discussione, il tribuno, temendo che Paolo fosse fatto da loro a pezzi, ordinò ai soldati di scendere, toglierlo di mezzo a loro e condurlo in fortezza.	10 And since a great dissension had been made, the tribune, fearing that Paul might be torn apart by them, ordered the soldiers to descend and to seize him from their midst, and to bring him into the fortress.
11 La notte seguente il Signore gli apparve e gli disse: Fatti animo, chè come mi hai reso testimonianza in Gerusalemme, cosi è necessario che tu me la renda anche a Roma.	11 Then, on the following night, the Lord stood near him and said: “Be constant. For just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so also it is necessary for you to testify at Rome.”
12 E, fattosi giorno, si unirono alcuni dei Giudei e s'impegnarono con giuramento a non mangiare e non bere, finché non avessero ucciso Paolo.	12 And when daylight arrived, some of the Jews gathered together and bound themselves with an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
13 Quelli che avevan fatta questa congiura eran più di quaranta	13 Now there were more than forty men who had taken this oath together.
14 e andarono dai principi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani a dire: Ci siamo obbligati con giuramento a non prendere cibo, finché non abbiamo ucciso Paolo.	14 And they approached the leaders of the priests, and the elders, and they said: “We have sworn ourselves by an oath, so that we will taste nothing, until we have killed Paul.
15 Or dunque col Sinedrio fate sapere al tribuno di condurlo alla vostra presenta, come se voleste scoprir qualche cosa di più sicuro intorno a lui; e noi siamo pronti ad ucciderlo prima che lui si accosti.	15 Therefore, with the council, you should now give notice to the tribune, so that he may bring him to you, as if you intended to determine something else about him. But before he approaches, we have made preparations to put him to death.”
16 Ma un figliolo della sorella di Paolo, avendo avuta notizia di queste insidie, andò alla fortezza e lo palesò a Paolo.	16 But when Paul’s sister’s son had heard of this, about their treachery, he went and entered into the fortress, and he reported it to Paul.
17 E Paolo, chiamato a sé uno dei centurioni, disse: Conduci cotesto giovanetto al tribuno, perchè ha qualche cosa da fargli sapere.	17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: “Lead this young man to the tribune. For he has something to tell him.”
18 Quello poi lo prese e lo condusse al tribuno e disse: Quel Paolo che è in catene m'ha pregato di condurre a te questo giovane che ha qualche cosa da dirti.	18 And indeed, he took him and led him to the tribune, and he said, “Paul, the prisoner, asked me to lead this young man to you, since he has something to say to you.”
19 E il tribuno, presolo per mano, si ritrasse con lui in disparte e gli domandò: Che è quello che tu hai da farmi sapere?	19 Then the tribune, taking him by the hand, withdrew with him by themselves, and he asked him: “What is it that you have to tell me?”
20 E quello disse: I Giudei si sono accordati per pregarti di condurre domani Paolo al Sinedrio, come se volessero esaminarlo più minutamente;	20 Then he said: “The Jews have met to ask you to bring Paul tomorrow to the council, as if they intended to question him about something else.
21 ma tu non dare retta ad essi; perchè più di quaranta uomini dei loro gli tendono insidie ed hanno promesso con giuramento di non mangiare nè bere, finché non lo abbiano ammazzato: ed ora stali pronti aspettando il tuo consenso.	21 But truly, you should not believe them, for they would ambush him with more than forty men from among them, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat, nor to drink, until they have put him to death. And they are now prepared, hoping for an affirmation from you.”
22 Il tribuno allora rimandò il giovanetto ordinandogli di non dire ad alcuno di avergli palesate tali cose.	22 And then the tribune dismissed the young man, instructing him not to tell anyone that he had made known these things to him.
23 E chiamati due centurioni, disse loro: Per la terza ora della notte tenete pronti duecento soldati che vadano fino a Cesarea, e settanta cavalieri e duecento lance;	23 Then, having called two centurions, he said to them: “Prepare two hundred soldiers, so that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen, for the third hour of the night.
24 preparate delle cavalcature sulle quali conducano salvo Paolo al preside Felice.	24 And prepare beasts of burden to carry Paul, so that they may lead him safely to Felix, the governor.”
25 Egli infatti ebbe paura che i Giudei lo rapissero e lo uccidessero e poi lui fosse calunniato, come se avesse tirato al danaro.	25 For he was afraid, lest perhaps the Jews might seize him and kill him, and that afterwards he would be falsely accused, as if he had accepted a bribe. And so he wrote a letter containing the following:
26 Scrisse inoltre la seguente lettera: « Claudio Lisia all'eccellentissimo governatore Felice, salute.	26 “Claudius Lysias, to the most excellent governor, Felix: greetings.
27 Questo uomo, preso dai Giudei e vicino ad essere ucciso, io, sopragginnto coi soldati, lo liberai, avendo inteso come egli era romano.	27 This man, having been apprehended by the Jews and being about to be put to death by them, I rescued, overwhelming them with soldiers, since I realized that he is a Roman.
28 Volendo poi sapere di qual delitto lo accusassero, lo menai al loro Sinedrio;	28 And wanting to know the reason that they objected to him, I brought him into their council.
29 ma trovai che era accusato per questioni della loro legge, senza però avere colpa degna di morte o di catene.	29 And I discovered him to be accused about questions of their law. Yet truly, nothing deserving of death or imprisonment was within the accusation.
30 Ma essendo poi informato che si ordiscono delle congiure contro di ini, l'ho mandato, avvisando anche gli accusatori che si rivolgano a te. Stai sano ».	30 And when I had been given news of ambushes, which they had prepared against him, I sent him to you, notifying his accusers also, so that they may plead their accusations before you. Farewell.”
31 I soldati allora, secondo Forcine dato loro, presero Paolo con loro e la notte lo condussero ad Antipatride.	31 Therefore the soldiers, taking Paul according to their orders, brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 Il giorno seguente lasciando che andassero con lui i cavalieri, tornarono alla fortezza.	32 And the next day, sending the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the fortress.
33 E quelli, entrati in Cesarea e data la lettera al preside, gli presentarono anche Paolo.	33 And when they had arrived at Caesarea and had delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul before him.
34 Avendola letta, il preside chiese a Paolo di che paese fosse, e sentito che era di Cilicia, disse:	34 And when he had read it and had asked which province he was from, realizing that he was from Cilicia, he said:
35 T'ascolterò, arrivati che siano i tuoi accusatori. E ordinò che fosse custodito nel pretorio di Erode.	35 “I will hear you, when your accusers have arrived.” And he ordered him to be kept in the praetorium of Herod.
