Geremia 5

BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Girate per le vie di Gerusalemme, guardate, osservate, cercate per le sue piazze, se vi trovate un uomo che pratichi la giustizia e cerchi di essere fedele, ed io le userò misericordia.	1 Roam the streets of Jerusalem, look about and observe, Search through her public places, to find even one Who lives uprightly and seeks to be faithful, and I will pardon her!
2 Ma essi anche quando dicono « Vive il Signore » col falso giureranno.	2 Though they say, "As the LORD lives," they swear falsely.
3 Signore, i tuoi occhi guardano alla fedeltà: li hai percossi e non han sentito dolore, li hai infranti e non han voluto correggersi, hanno indurata la loro faccia più d'una pietra, han rifiutato di ritornare.	3 O LORD, do your eyes not look for honesty? You struck them, but they did not cringe; you laid them low, but they refused correction; They set their faces harder than stone, and refused to return to you.
4 E io dissi: « Forse son poveri, stolti, non sanno la via del Signore e i giudizi del loro Dio:	4 It is only the lowly, I thought, who are foolish; For they know not the way of the LORD, their duty to their God.
5 anderò dunque dai capi, e parlerò loro: perchè essi conoscono la via del Signore e i giudizi del loro Dio ». Ma ecco che essi più degli altri e tutti insieme hanno spezzato il giogo, hanno rotto i freni.	5 I will go to the great ones and speak with them; For they know the way of the LORD, their duty to their God. But, one and all, they had broken the yoke, torn off the harness.
6 Per questo il leone della foresta li ha sbranati, il lupo sul far della sera li ha sterminati, il leopardo sta in agguato sopra le loro città: chiunque ne uscirà sarà preso, perchè si sono moltiplicate le loro trasgressioni, le loro ribellioni son divenute ostinate.	6 Therefore lions from the forest slay them, wolves of the desert ravage them, Leopards keep watch round their cities: all who come out are torn to pieces For their many crimes and their numerous rebellions.
7 In che ti potrei esser propizio? I tuoi figlioli mi hanno abbandonato, e giurano per quelli che non son dèi: li ho saziati, ed essi a fornicare, a gozzovigliare nella casa della meretrice.	7 Why should I pardon you these things? Your sons have forsaken me, they swear by gods that are not. I fed them, but they committed adultery; to the harlot's house they throng.
8 Son divenuti come cavalli stalloni in calore: ciascuno nitrisce verso la moglie del suo prossimo.	8 Lustful stallions they are, each neighs after another's wife.
9 Ed io non dovrò punire tali cose? — dice il Signore, — Sopra una nazione come questa, non prenderò le Tuie vendette?	9 Shall I not punish them for these things? says the LORD; On a nation such as this shall I not take vengeance?
10 Salite sopra le sue mura, distruggetele, ma non le rovinate del tutto, togliete i suoi rampolli perchè non sono del Signore.	10 Climb to her terraces, and ravage them, destroy them (not) wholly. Tear away her tendrils, they do not belong to the LORD.
11 Hanno peccato grandemente contro di me la casa d'Israele e la casa di Giuda — dice il Signore.	11 For they have openly rebelled against me, both the house of Israel and the house of Judah, says the LORD.
12 Hanno rinnegato il Signore, e han detto: « Non è lui; non verrà sopra di noi la rovina, non vedremo nè la spada nè fa fame;	12 They denied the LORD, saying, "Not he-- No evil shall befall us, neither sword nor famine shall we see.
13 i profeti han parlato a caso, senza avere responsi: queste cose avverranno a loro ».	13 The prophets have become wind, and the word is not in them. May their threats be carried out against themselves!"
14 Ecco quanto dice il Signore, il Dio degli eserciti: « Siccome voi avete parlato così, ecco che io metto le mie parole nella tua bocca come un fuoco, e questo popolo, come legno, sarà divorato.	14 Now, for this that you have said, says the LORD, the God of hosts- Behold, I make my words in your mouth, a fire, And this people is the wood that it shall devour!--
15 Ecco che io farò venire sopra di voi delle genti da lontano, o casa d'Israele, — dice il Signore — una nazione forte, una nazione antica, una nazione di cui tu non conoscerai la lingua, e non intenderai quello che dica.	15 Beware, I will bring against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, says the LORD; A long-lived nation, an ancient nation, a people whose language you know not, whose speech you cannot understand.
16 Il suo turcasso è come un sepolcro aperto, son tutti valorosi;	16 Their quivers are like open graves; all of them are warriors.
17 essa mangerà le tue raccolte, il tuo pane, divorerà i tuoi figli e le tue figlie, mangerà i tuoi greggi, i tuoi armenti, divorerà le tue vigne, i tuoi fichi, distruggerà colla spada le tue città fortificate, nelle quali tu confidavi.	17 They will devour your harvest and your bread, devour your sons and your daughters, Devour your sheep and cattle, devour your vines and fig trees; They will beat flat with the sword the fortified city in which you trust.
18 Tuttavia in quei giorni — dice il Signore — non compirò la vostra rovina.	18 Yet even in those days, says the LORD, I will not wholly destroy you.
19 Quando voi direte: « Per qual ragione il Signore, il nostro Dio ci ha fatte tutte queste cose? » risponderai loro: « Come mi avete abbandonato, per servire a dèi stranieri nella vostra terra, così servirete a dèi stranieri in terra che non è vostra ».	19 And when they ask, "Why has the LORD done all these things to us?" say to them, "As you have forsaken me to serve strange gods in your own land, so shall you serve strangers in a land not your own."
20 Questo annunziatelo alla casa di Giacobbe, fatelo sapere a Giuda, dicendo:	20 Announce this to the house of Jacob, proclaim it in Judah:
21 « Ascolta, o popolo senza cervello e senza cuore, che hai gli occhi e non vedi, hai gli orecchi e non senti.	21 Pay attention to this, foolish and senseless people Who have eyes and see not, who have ears and hear not.
22 Voi dunque non mi temete — dice il Signore, — non vi pentite alla mia presenza? Son io che posi la sabbia per confine al mare, con ordine eterno che egli non potrà trasgredire. S'agiteranno le sue onde, ma saranno impotenti, gonfieranno, ma non potran passare il segno.	22 Should you not fear me, says the LORD, should you not tremble before me? I made the sandy shore the sea's limit, which by eternal decree it may not overstep. Toss though it may, it is to no avail; though its billows roar, they cannot pass.
23 Ma questo popolo s'è fatto un cuore incredulo e ribelle, si son ritirati, se ne sono andati,	23 But this people's heart is stubborn and rebellious; they turn and go away,
24 e non han detto nel loro cuore: « Temiamo il Signore Dio nostro, che ci dà la pioggia della prima e dell'ultima stagione a suo tempo, e ci mantiene ogni anno abbondante raccolta ».	24 And say not in their hearts, "Let us fear the LORD, our God, Who gives us rain early and late, in its time; Who watches for us over the appointed weeks of harvest."
25 Le vostre iniquità han fatto sparire queste cose, i vostri peccati vi hanno privati del bene.	25 Your crimes have prevented these things, your sins have turned back these blessings from you.
26 Infatti si son trovati nel mio popolo degli empi che tendono insidie, come uccellatori, pongono lacci e reti per prendere gli uomini.	26 For there are among my people criminals; like fowlers they set traps, but it is men they catch.
27 Come una gabbia è piena di uccelli, così la loro casa è piena di frodi, così son diventati potenti e ricchi.	27 Their houses are as full of treachery as a bird-cage is of birds; Therefore they grow powerful and rich,
28 sono ingrassati, impinguati. Hanno orribilmente trasgrediti i miei comandi: non han resa giustizia alla vedova, non han portata a fine la causa dell'orfano, non hanno riconosciuto i diritti del povero.	28 fat and sleek. They go their wicked way; justice they do not defend By advancing the claim of the fatherless or judging the cause of the poor.
29 Ed io non dovrò punire queste cose? — dice il Signore, — E sopra una nazione come questa non prenderò le mie vendette?	29 Shall I not punish these things? says the LORD; on a nation such as this shall I not take vengeance?
30 Cose da sbalordire, che han del prodigioso, sono avvenute sulla terra:	30 A shocking, horrible thing has happened in the land:
31 I profeti profetizzano menzogne, i sacerdoti batton loro le mani, e il mio popolo ama simili cose: che avverrà dunque di lui alla fine?	31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests teach as they wish; Yet my people will have it so; what will you do when the end comes?
