Livro dos Provérbios 23

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando te assentares à mesa com um grande, considera com atenção quem está diante de ti:	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 põe uma faca na tua garganta, se tu sentes muito apetite;	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 não cobices seus manjares que são alimentos enganosos.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 Não te afadigues para te enriqueceres, evita aplicar a isso teu espírito.	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 Mal fixas os olhos nos bens, e nada mais há, porque a riqueza tem asas como a águia que voa para o céu.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 Não comas com homem invejoso, não cobices seus manjares,	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 porque ele se mostra tal qual se calculou em si mesmo. Ele te diz: Come e bebe, mas seu coração não está contigo.	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.
8 Comido o bocado, tu o vomitarás e desperdiçarás tuas amabilidades.	8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.
9 Não fales aos ouvidos do insensato porque ele desprezaria a sabedoria de tuas palavras.	9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.
10 Não toques no marco antigo, não penetres na terra dos órfãos	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 porque seu vingador é poderoso e defenderá sua causa contra ti.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Aplica teu coração à instrução e teus ouvidos às palavras da ciência.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 Não poupes ao menino a correção: se tu o castigares com a vara, ele não morrerá,	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 castigando-o com a vara, salvarás sua vida da morada dos mortos.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Meu filho, se o teu espírito for sábio, meu coração alegrar-se-á contigo!	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 Meus rins estremecerão de alegria, quando teus lábios proferirem palavras retas.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 Que teu coração não inveje os pecadores, mas permaneça sempre no temor do Senhor	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 porque {então} haverá certamente um futuro e tua esperança não será frustrada.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Ouve, meu filho: sê sabio, dirige teu coração pelo caminho reto,	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 não te ajuntes com os bebedores de vinho, com aqueles que devoram carnes,	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 pois o ébrio e o glutão se empobrecem e a sonolência veste-se com andrajos.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Dá ouvidos a teu pai, àquele que te gerou e não desprezes tua mãe quando envelhecer.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Adquire a verdade e não a vendas, adquire sabedoria, instruções e inteligência.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 O pai do justo exultará de alegria; aquele que gerou um sábio alegrar-se-á nele.	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 Que teu pai se alegre por tua causa, que viva na alegria aquela que te deu à luz!	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Meu filho, dá-me teu coração. Que teus olhos observem meus caminhos,	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 pois a meretriz é uma fossa profunda e a entranha, um poço estreito:	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 como um salteador ele fica de emboscada e, entre os homens, multiplica os infiéis.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 Para quem os ah? Para quem os ais? Para quem as contendas? Para quem as queixas? Para quem as feridas sem motivo? Para quem o vermelho dos olhos?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Para aqueles que permanecem junto ao vinho, para aqueles que vão saborear o vinho misturado.	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 Não consideres o vinho: como ele é vermelho, como brilha no copo, como corre suavemente!	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 Mas, no fim, morde como uma serpente e pica como um basilisco!	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 Os teus olhos verão coisas estranhas, teu coração pronunciará coisas incoerentes.	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 Serás como um homem adormecido no fundo do mar, ou deitado no cimo dum mastro:	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 Feriram-me, dirás tu; e não sinto dor! Bateram-me... e não sinto nada. Quando despertei eu? Quero mais ainda!	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
