1 Samuel 16

1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons."	1 Il Signore disse a Samuele: "Fino a quando tu fai lutto su Saul, mentre io l'ho rigettato perché non regni più su Israele? Riempi il tuo corno d'olio e va'; ti mando da Iesse il betlemita, perché ho veduto tra i suoi figli il mio re".
2 And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'	2 Rispose Samuele: "Come potrò andare? Lo sentirà Saul e mi ucciderà". Il Signore riprese: "Prenderai con te una vitella dell'armento e dirai: "Sono venuto per offrire un sacrificio al Signore".
3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me him whom I name to you."	3 Inviterai Iesse al sacrificio, io ti indicherò quello che dovrai fare e tu mi consacrerai colui che io ti dirò".
4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?"	4 Samuele eseguì quello che aveva ordinato il Signore. Arrivato a Betlemme, gli anziani della città gli andarono incontro trepidanti e gli domandarono: "E' pacifica la tua venuta?".
5 And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD; consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." And he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.	5 Rispose: "Pacifica! Sono venuto per offrire un sacrificio al Signore. Purificatevi e venite con me al sacrificio". Fece purificare Iesse e i suoi figli e li invitò al sacrificio.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed is before him."	6 Quando essi giunsero, egli osservò Eliab ed esclamò: "Oh, il consacrato sta davanti al Signore!".
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."	7 Ma il Signore disse a Samuele: "Non badare al suo aspetto e all'altezza della sua statura, poiché l'ho respinto; perché l'uomo non vede quello che vede Dio: l'uomo infatti guarda all'apparenza, ma il Signore guarda al cuore".
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."	8 Iesse chiamò Abìnadab e lo fece passare davanti a Samuele. Questi disse: "Nemmeno questo è scelto dal Signore".
9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."	9 Iesse fece passare Samma e Samuele disse: "Nemmeno questo è scelto dal Signore".
10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these."	10 Iesse fece passare così i suoi sette figli davanti a Samuele, ma Samuele disse a Iesse: "Il Signore non ha scelto nessuno di questi!".
11 And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he comes here."	11 Samuele domandò a Iesse: "Sono dunque tutti qui i giovani?". Quello rispose: "E' rimasto ancora il più piccolo, che ora sta pascolando il gregge". Samuele disse a Iesse: "Manda a prenderlo, perché non ci metteremo a tavola finché egli non sia venuto qui".
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he."	12 Egli lo fece venire: era rosso, con begli occhi e bell'aspetto. Il Signore disse: "Su, consacralo, perché è lui!".
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.	13 Allora Samuele, preso il corno d'olio, lo consacrò in mezzo ai suoi fratelli. Lo spirito del Signore irruppe su Davide da quel giorno in poi. Samuele si alzò e ritornò a Rama.
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.	14 Intanto lo spirito del Signore si era allontanato da Saul e lo aveva invaso uno spirito malvagio da parte del Signore.
15 And Saul's servants said to him, "Behold now, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.	15 I cortigiani di Saul gli dicevano: "Ecco, uno spirito malvagio di Dio ti ha invaso;
16 Let our lord now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre; and when the evil spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well."	16 il nostro signore, dunque, dia ordini, i tuoi servi sono davanti a te, essi cercheranno un uomo che sappia sonare la cetra; quando lo spirito malvagio di Dio sarà su di te, egli sonerà con la sua mano e tu ne avrai beneficio".
17 So Saul said to his servants, "Provide for me a man who can play well, and bring him to me."	17 Saul disse ai suoi cortigiani: "Cercatemi, per favore, un uomo che sappia sonare bene e conducetemelo".
18 One of the young men answered, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence; and the LORD is with him."	18 Uno dei suoi cortigiani prese la parola e disse: "Ecco, ho veduto un figlio di Iesse il betlemita: sa sonare, è un prode e un guerriero, abile parlatore e uomo di bella presenza, e il Signore è con lui".
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep."	19 Allora Saul mandò dei messaggeri a Iesse dicendo: "Mandami tuo figlio Davide, che è con il gregge".
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a skin of wine and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Saul.	20 Iesse prese un carico di pane, un otre di vino e un capretto e li mandò a Saul per mezzo di Davide suo figlio.
21 And David came to Saul, and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.	21 Davide, giunto da Saul, rimase al suo servizio. Saul gli si affezionò molto e Davide diventò suo scudiero.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight."	22 Saul mandò a dire a Iesse: "Rimanga Davide al mio servizio, perché egli ha trovato benevolenza ai miei occhi".
23 And whenever the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.	23 Così quando lo spirito di Dio era su Saul, Davide prendeva la cetra e suonava con la sua mano; Saul trovava la calma, ne aveva un beneficio e lo spirito malvagio si allontanava da lui.
