Corinthians 11

Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you.2 I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you.
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and a husband the head of his wife, and God the head of Christ.
Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head,4 Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame upon his head.
but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head--it is the same as if her head were shaven.5 But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved.
For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil.6 For if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should wear a veil.
For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.7 A man, on the other hand, should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.
(For man was not made from woman, but woman from man.8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;
Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.)9 nor was man created for woman, but woman for man;
That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels.10 for this reason a woman should have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
(Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman;11 Woman is not independent of man or man of woman in the Lord.
for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.)12 For just as woman came from man, so man is born of woman; but all things are from God.
Judge for yourselves; is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head unveiled?
Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is degrading to him,14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears his hair long it is a disgrace to him,
but if a woman has long hair, it is her pride? For her hair is given to her for a covering.15 whereas if a woman has long hair it is her glory, because long hair has been given (her) for a covering?
If any one is disposed to be contentious, we recognize no other practice, nor do the churches of God.16 But if anyone is inclined to be argumentative, we do not have such a custom, nor do the churches of God.
But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.17 In giving this instruction, I do not praise the fact that your meetings are doing more harm than good.
For, in the first place, when you assemble as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and I partly believe it,18 First of all, I hear that when you meet as a church there are divisions among you, and to a degree I believe it;
for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.19 there have to be factions among you in order that (also) those who are approved among you may become known.
When you meet together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat.20 When you meet in one place, then, it is not to eat the Lord's supper,
For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal, and one is hungry and another is drunk.21 for in eating, each one goes ahead with his own supper, and one goes hungry while another gets drunk.
What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.22 Do you not have houses in which you can eat and drink? Or do you show contempt for the church of God and make those who have nothing feel ashamed? What can I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this matter I do not praise you.
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread,
and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."24 and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.
Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord.27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord.
Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.28 A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup.
For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.
That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.30 That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying.
But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged.31 If we discerned ourselves, we would not be under judgment;
But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world.32 but since we are judged by (the) Lord, we are being disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another--33 Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
if any one is hungry, let him eat at home--lest you come together to be condemned. About the other things I will give directions when I come.34 If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that your meetings may not result in judgment. The other matters I shall set in order when I come.
