Luke 23

1 Then the whole company of them arose, and brought him before Pilate.	1 Alzatasi poi tutta l'assemblea, lo condussero da Pilato.
2 And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king."	2 E cominciarono ad accusarlo, dicendo: Abbiamo trovato costui a sovvertir la nostra nazione, e a distogliere dal pagare il tributo a Cesare, dicendo d'essere lui il Cristo Re.
3 And Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And he answered him, "You have said so."	3 E Pilato lo interrogò: Sei tu il Re dei Giudei? Ed egli rispose: Tu lo dici.
4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no crime in this man."	4 E Pilato replicò ai principi dei sacerdoti e alla turba: Non trovo colpa alcuna in quest'uomo.
5 But they were urgent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place."	5 Ma quelli ancor più insistevano dicendo: Solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dalla Galilea, ove ha cominciato, fino a qui.
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.	6 Or Pilato, sentendo Galilea, domandò se quell'uomo fosse Galileo.
7 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.	7 E, saputo che era della giurisdizione d'Erode, lo rimise a lui che in quei giorni si trovava pure a Gerusalemme.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.	8 Erode, nel vedere Gesù, si rallegrò molto, perchè da gran tempo desiderava conoscerlo avendo sentito molte cose di lui, e sperava di vedergli fare qualche pro­digio.
9 So he questioned him at some length; but he made no answer.	9 Or fecegli molte interrogazioni. Ma Gesù non gli risposo mai.
10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.	10 Intanto i principi dei sacerdoti e gli Scribi stavano lì ad accusarlo con pertinacia.
11 And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then, arraying him in gorgeous apparel, he sent him back to Pilate.	11 Erode però col suo esercito lo disprezzo, e lo schernì, e dopo averlo vestito di bianco, lo rimandò a Pilato.
12 And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.	12 Ed Erode e Pilato in quel giorno diventarono amici, che prima erano nemici tra loro.
13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,	13 Or Pilato, convocati i principi dei sacerdoti ed i capitani del popolo,
14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him;	14 disse loro: M'avete presentato quest'uomo come sovvertitore della plebe, ed ecco, dopo averlo esaminato davanti a voi, non trovo in lui nulla di quanto lo accusate.
15 neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold, nothing deserving death has been done by him;	15 E neppure Erode, chè v'ho rimessi a lui; ed ecco non è incriminato di nulla che sia reo di morte.
16 I will therefore chastise him and release him."	16 Quindi gli darò un castigo e lo rimanderò libero.
17 .	17 Or egli era obbligato a liberar loro uno nella festa.
18 But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas"--	18 Ma tutta la folla insieme gridò: Leva dal mondo costui e liberaci Barabba.
19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder.	19 Questi era stato incarcerato per una sedizione avvenuta in città e per omicidio.
20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus;	20 Or Pilato, desiderando liberar Gesù, parlò di nuovo a loro.
21 but they shouted out, "Crucify, crucify him!"	21 Ma essi urlavano dicendo: Crocifìggilo, crocifìggilo.
22 A third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no crime deserving death; I will therefore chastise him and release him."	22 Ed egli per la terza volta disse loro: Ma che ha fatto di male? Io non trovo in lui nulla degno di morte; quindi gli infliggerò un castigo e lo libererò.
23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.	23 Ma quelli insistevano gridando a gran voce che fosse crocifìsso. Ed i loro clamori ebbero il sopravvento.
24 So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted.	24 Sicché Pilato sentenziò che fosse fatto quanto domandavano.
25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.	25 Lasciò pertanto loro quello che era stato imprigionato per sedizione ed omicidio, come richiedevano, ed abbandonò Gesù in loro balìa.
26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.	26 E nel condurlo al supplizio, presero un certo Simone, cireneo, che tornava dalla campagna, e gli misero addosso la croce perchè la portasse dietro a Gesù.
27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people, and of women who bewailed and lamented him.	27 E lo seguiva gran folla di popolo e di donne, le quali piangevano e facevano lamenti su di lui.
28 But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.	28 Ma Gesù, rivoltosi ad esse, disse: Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me; ma piangete su voi stesse e sui vostri figlioli,
29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!'	29 perchè, ecco, verranno i giorni in cui si dirà: Beate le sterili e i seni che non hanno generato e le mammelle che non hanno allattato. s
30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.'	30 Allora si metteranno a dire alle montagne: Cadeteci addosso; e alle colline: Ricopriteci.
31 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"	31 Chè se si tratta così il legno verde, che sarà del secco?
32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.	32 Eran condotti con lui due altri, malfattori, per essere giustiziati.
33 And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.	33 E, giunti al luogo detto Calvario, vi crocifissero lui ed i malfattori, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.
34 And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments.	34 E Gesù diceva: Padre, perdona loro, perchè non sanno quel che fanno. Poi, divise le sue vesti, lo tirarono a sorte.
35 And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!"	35 E il popolo stava a guardare e lo beffeggiava con i suoi capi, i quali dicevano: Ha salvato gli altri, salvi se stesso, se è il Cristo.
36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar,	36 E anche i soldati lo schernivano, accostandosi e porgendogli l'aceto, e dicevano:
37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"	37 Se tu sei il Re dei Giudei, salva te stesso.
38 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."	38 C'era inoltre sul capo di lui anche una iscrizione in greco, latino ed ebraico: Questi è il Re dei Giudei.
39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!"	39 Or uno dei briganti crocifissi lo bestemmiava dicendo: Se tu sei il Cristo, salva te e noi.
40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?	40 Rispondendogli, l'altro lo riprendeva col dirgli: Neppure tu temi Dio, trovandoti con lui nel medesimo supplizio?
41 And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."	41 E, in quanto a noi, è giusto, perchè riceviamo degna pena per le nostre azioni, ma costui non ha fatto nulla di male.
42 And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."	42 E diceva a Gesù: Signore, ricordati di me quando sarai giunto nel tuo regno!
43 And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."	43 E Gesù gli rispose: Io ti dico in verità, che oggi sarai meco in Paradiso.
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,	44 Era circa l'ora sesta, e si fece buio per tutta la terra fino all'ora nona,
45 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.	45 per l'ecclissarsi del sole; e il velo del tempio si squarciò per mezzo.
46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his last.	46 E Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: Padre, nelle tue mani raccomando il mio spirito. E, detto questo, spirò.
47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, and said, "Certainly this man was innocent!"	47 Il centurione, visto quanto era accaduto, diede gloria a Dio dicendo: Certamente questo uomo era giusto.
48 And all the multitudes who assembled to see the sight, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.	48 E tutto il popolo che era presente a questo spettacolo, vedute le cose che erano successe, tornava indietro battendosi il petto.
49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things.	49 Ma tutti i suoi amici e le donne che lo avevano seguito dalla Galilea stavano in distanza ad osservare queste cose.
50 Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,	50 Allora un uomo, chiamato Giuseppe, che era del Sinedrio, uomo dabbene e giusto
51 who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he was looking for the kingdom of God.	51 e non aveva consentito alle deliberazioni e all'operato degli altri, era d'Arimatea, città della Giudea, e aspettava anche lui il regno di Dio:
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	52 Si presentò da Pilato a chiedere il corpo di Gesù;
53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.	53 e, depostolo dalla croce, l'involse in un lenzuolo, e lo pose in un sepolcro scavato nel sasso, nel quale nessuno era ancora stato posto.
54 It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.	54 Era il giorno di Parasceve e stava per cominciare il sabato.
55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid;	55 E le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea, avendo tenuto dietro a Giuseppe, videro il sepolcro e come vi fosse stato posto il corpo di Gesù.
56 then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.	56 Poi se ne tornarono a preparare aromi e unguenti; ma nel sabato non si mossero, secondo il precetto.
