1 Then the whole company of them arose, and brought him before Pilate.	1 Tutta l'assemblea si alzò, lo condussero da Pilato
2 And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king."	2 e cominciarono ad accusarlo: "Abbiamo trovato costui che sobillava il nostro popolo, impediva di dare tributi a Cesare e affermava di essere il Cristo re".
3 And Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And he answered him, "You have said so."	3 Pilato lo interrogò: "Sei tu il re dei Giudei?". Ed egli rispose: "Tu lo dici".
4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no crime in this man."	4 Pilato disse ai sommi sacerdoti e alla folla: "Non trovo nessuna colpa in quest'uomo".
5 But they were urgent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place."	5 Ma essi insistevano: "Costui solleva il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, dopo aver cominciato dalla Galilea fino a qui".
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.	6 Udito ciò, Pilato domandò se era Galileo
7 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.	7 e, saputo che apparteneva alla giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò da Erode che in quei giorni si trovava anch'egli a Gerusalemme.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.	8 Vedendo Gesù, Erode si rallegrò molto, perché da molto tempo desiderava vederlo per averne sentito parlare e sperava di vedere qualche miracolo fatto da lui.
9 So he questioned him at some length; but he made no answer.	9 Lo interrogò con molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla.
10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.	10 C'erano là anche i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi, e lo accusavano con insistenza.
11 And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then, arraying him in gorgeous apparel, he sent him back to Pilate.	11 Allora Erode, con i suoi soldati, lo insultò e lo schernì, poi lo rivestì di una splendida veste e lo rimandò a Pilato.
12 And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.	12 In quel giorno Erode e Pilato diventarono amici; prima infatti c'era stata inimicizia tra loro.
13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,	13 Pilato, riuniti i sommi sacerdoti, le autorità e il popolo,
14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him;	14 disse: "Mi avete portato quest'uomo come sobillatore del popolo; ecco, l'ho esaminato davanti a voi, ma non ho trovato in lui nessuna colpa di quelle di cui lo accusate;
15 neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold, nothing deserving death has been done by him;	15 e neanche Erode, infatti ce l'ha rimandato. Ecco, egli non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte.
16 I will therefore chastise him and release him."	16 Perciò, dopo averlo severamente castigato, lo rilascerò".

18 But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas"--	18 Ma essi si misero a gridare tutti insieme: "A morte costui! Dacci libero Barabba!".
19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder.	19 Questi era stato messo in carcere per una sommossa scoppiata in città e per omicidio.
20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus;	20 Pilato parlò loro di nuovo, volendo rilasciare Gesù.
21 but they shouted out, "Crucify, crucify him!"	21 Ma essi urlavano: "Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!".
22 A third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no crime deserving death; I will therefore chastise him and release him."	22 Ed egli, per la terza volta, disse loro: "Ma che male ha fatto costui? Non ho trovato nulla in lui che meriti la morte. Lo castigherò severamente e poi lo rilascerò".
23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.	23 Essi però insistevano a gran voce, chiedendo che venisse crocifisso; e le loro grida crescevano.
24 So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted.	24 Pilato allora decise che la loro richiesta fosse eseguita.
25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.	25 Rilasciò colui che era stato messo in carcere per sommossa e omicidio e che essi richiedevano, e abbandonò Gesù alla loro volontà.
26 And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.	26 Mentre lo conducevano via, presero un certo Simone di Cirène che veniva dalla campagna e gli misero addosso la croce da portare dietro a Gesù.
27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people, and of women who bewailed and lamented him.	27 Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che si battevano il petto e facevano lamenti su di lui.
28 But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.	28 Ma Gesù, voltandosi verso le donne, disse: "Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me, ma piangete su voi stesse e sui vostri figli.
29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!'	29 Ecco, verranno giorni nei quali si dirà: Beate le sterili e i grembi che non hanno generato e le mammelle che non hanno allattato.
30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.'	30 Allora cominceranno a 'dire ai monti': 'Cadete su di noi! e ai colli: Copriteci!'
31 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"	31 Perché se trattano così il legno verde, che avverrà del legno secco?".
32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.	32 Venivano condotti insieme con lui anche due malfattori per essere giustiziati.
33 And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.	33 Quando giunsero al luogo detto Cranio, là crocifissero lui e i due malfattori, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.
34 And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments.	34 Gesù diceva: "Padre, perdonali, perché non sanno quello che fanno". 'Dopo essersi poi divise le sue vesti, le tirarono a sorte'.
35 And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!"	35 Il popolo stava 'a vedere', i capi invece lo 'schernivano' dicendo: "Ha salvato gli altri, salvi se stesso, se è il Cristo di Dio, il suo eletto".
36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar,	36 Anche i soldati lo schernivano, e gli si accostavano per porgergli 'dell'aceto', e dicevano:
37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"	37 "Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso".
38 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."	38 C'era anche una scritta, sopra il suo capo: Questi è il re dei Giudei.
39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!"	39 Uno dei malfattori appesi alla croce lo insultava: "Non sei tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e anche noi!".
40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?	40 Ma l'altro lo rimproverava: "Neanche tu hai timore di Dio e sei dannato alla stessa pena?
41 And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."	41 Noi giustamente, perché riceviamo il giusto per le nostre azioni, egli invece non ha fatto nulla di male".
42 And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."	42 E aggiunse: "Gesù, ricordati di me quando entrerai nel tuo regno".
43 And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."	43 Gli rispose: "In verità ti dico, oggi sarai con me nel paradiso".
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,	44 Era verso mezzogiorno, quando il sole si eclissò e si fece buio su tutta la terra fino alle tre del pomeriggio.
45 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.	45 Il velo del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo.
46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his last.	46 Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: "Padre, 'nelle tue mani consegno il mio spirito'". Detto questo spirò.
47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, and said, "Certainly this man was innocent!"	47 Visto ciò che era accaduto, il centurione glorificava Dio: "Veramente quest'uomo era giusto".
48 And all the multitudes who assembled to see the sight, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.	48 Anche tutte le folle che erano accorse a questo spettacolo, ripensando a quanto era accaduto, se ne tornavano percuotendosi il petto.
49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things.	49 Tutti i suoi conoscenti assistevano da lontano e così le donne che lo avevano seguito fin dalla Galilea, osservando questi avvenimenti.
50 Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,	50 C'era un uomo di nome Giuseppe, membro del sinedrio, persona buona e giusta.
51 who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he was looking for the kingdom of God.	51 Non aveva aderito alla decisione e all'operato degli altri. Egli era di Arimatéa, una città dei Giudei, e aspettava il regno di Dio.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	52 Si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.
53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.	53 Lo calò dalla croce, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo depose in una tomba scavata nella roccia, nella quale nessuno era stato ancora deposto.
54 It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.	54 Era il giorno della parascève e già splendevano le luci del sabato.
55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid;	55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea seguivano Giuseppe; esse osservarono la tomba e come era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù,
56 then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.	56 poi tornarono indietro e prepararono aromi e oli profumati. Il giorno di sabato osservarono il riposo secondo il comandamento.
