It was now two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth, and kill him;1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
for they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult of the people."2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
But there were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was the ointment thus wasted?4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor." And they reproached her.5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you will, you can do good to them; but you will not always have me.7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burying.8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
And when they heard it they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?"12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him,13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
and wherever he enters, say to the householder, 'The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?'14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us."15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover.16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
And when it was evening he came with the twelve.17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
And as they were at table eating, Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me."18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
They began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one after another, "Is it I?"19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
For the Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body."22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
And he said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away; for it is written, ' I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
Peter said to him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not."29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
But he said vehemently, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." And they all said the same.31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
And they went to a place which was called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I pray."32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
And he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch."34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what thou wilt."36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer him.40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
And he came the third time, and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come; the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over. The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him and lead him away under guard."44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
And when he came, he went up to him at once, and said, "Master!" And he kissed him.45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
And they laid hands on him and seized him.46 The others seized him and arrested him.
But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled."49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
And they all forsook him, and fled.50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body; and they seized him,51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
And they led Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes were assembled.53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, and warming himself at the fire.54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
Now the chief priests and the whole council sought testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none.55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
For many bore false witness against him, and their witness did not agree.56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
Yet not even so did their testimony agree.59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?"60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
And Jesus said, "I am; and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
And the high priest tore his garments, and said, "Why do we still need witnesses?63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?" And they all condemned him as deserving death.64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to strike him, saying to him, "Prophesy!" And the guards received him with blows.65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came;66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him, and said, "You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus."67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you mean." And he went out into the gateway.68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
And the maid saw him, and began again to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them."69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
But again he denied it. And after a little while again the bystanders said to Peter, "Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean."70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know this man of whom you speak."71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
And immediately the cock crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
