1 It was now two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth, and kill him;	1 Di lì a due giorni era la pasqua e gli azzimi, ed i sommi sacerdo­ti e gli Scribi cercavano il modo di prendere Gesù con inganno ed ucciderlo.
2 for they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult of the people."	2 Ma dicevano: Non di festa, che non avvenga tumulto nel popolo.
3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.	3 Or mentre egli si trovava in Befania in casa di Simone il lebbroso, ed era a tavola, venne una donna con un alabastro d'unguento prezioso, di nardo schietto e, rotto l'alabastro, glielo versò sulla tosta.
4 But there were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was the ointment thus wasted?	4 E alcuni, indignati, cominciarono a dire: A che tanto scialacquo d'unguento?
5 For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor." And they reproached her.	5 chè potevasi quest'unguento vendere a più di trecento danari da distribuirsi ai poveri: e fremevan contro di lei.
6 But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.	6 Ma Gesù disse: Lasciatela fare; perchè la rimproverate? Ha fatto una buona azione verso di me,
7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you will, you can do good to them; but you will not always have me.	7 chè i poveri li avete sempre con voi o potete far loro del bene quanto vorrete, me però non avrete sempre.
8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burying.	8 Ha fatto quanto poteva, ungendo anticipatamente il mio corpo per la sepoltura.
9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."	9 Vi dico in verità, che in tutto il mondo, ovunque sarà predicato questo Vangelo, si racconterà in sua ricordanza quanto essa ha fatto.
10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.	10 E Giuda Iscariote, uno dei dodici, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti per consegnarlo in loro potere.
11 And when they heard it they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.	11 E quelli, uditolo, si rallegrarono e gli promisero del danaro. E cercava l'occasione opportuna di tradirlo.
12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?"	12 Or il primo giorno degli azzimi quando immolavan la pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dicono: Dove vuoi che andiamo ad apparecchiarti per mangiare la pasqua?
13 And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him,	13 Ed egli invia due dei suoi discepoli dicendo loro: Andate in città, e vi verrà incontro un uomo con una brocca d'acqua seguitelo
14 and wherever he enters, say to the householder, 'The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?'	14 e, dove entrerà, dite al padrone di casa: Il Maestro dice: dov'è la mia sala per mangiare la pasqua coi miei discepoli?
15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us."	15 Ed egli vi farà vedere un gran cenacolo già pronto; lì apparecchiato per noi.
16 And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover.	16 I suoi discepoli andarono e, giunti in città, trovarono come egli aveva loro detto, e apparecchiarono la pasqua.
17 And when it was evening he came with the twelve.	17 E, fattosi sera, egli vi andò coi dodici.
18 And as they were at table eating, Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me."	18 E mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù disse: In verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà, chi mangia meco.
19 They began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one after another, "Is it I?"	19 Allora essi incominciarono a rattristarsi e a dirgli ad uno ad uno:
20 He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.	20 Son forse io? Ed egli rispose loro: Uno dei dodici che intinge meco la mano nel piatto.
21 For the Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."	21 Il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come di lui sta scritto, ma guai a quell'uomo per cui esso è tradito. Era meglio per tal uomo non essere mai nato.
22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body."	22 E mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane: e, benedettolo, lo spezzò e lo diede loro, dicendo: Prendete, questo è il mio corpo.
23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.	23 E preso il calice e rese le grazie, lo diede ad essi, e ne bevvero tutti.
24 And he said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.	24 E disse loro: Questo è il mio sangue, del nuovo testamento, il quale sarà sparso per molti.
25 Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."	25 In verità vi dico: non berrò più di questo succo di vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio.
26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.	26 E detto l'inno, andarono al monte degli Olivi.
27 And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away; for it is written, ' I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'	27 E Gesù disse loro: Tutti patirete scandalo per cagion mia in questa notte; poiché sta scritto: Percuoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse.
28 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."	28 Ma, risuscitato che sia, vi precederò in Galilea.
29 Peter said to him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not."	29 Ma Pietro gli disse: Se anche tutti si scandalizzeranno, per tua cagiono, io mai.
30 And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."	30 E Gesù a lui: In verità ti dico, oggi, in questa notte, prima che il gallo canti per la seconda volta, mi rinnegherai per tre volte.
31 But he said vehemently, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." And they all said the same.	31 Ma egli con più veemenza dichiarava: Dovessi anche morir con te, non ti rinnegherò. E lo stesso dicevano gli altri.
32 And they went to a place which was called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I pray."	32 Poi vennero in un podere detto Getsemani; e disse ai suoi discepoli: Fermatevi qui finché sto a pregare.
33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.	33 E prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni. E cominciò a dar segni di spavento e di tedio.
34 And he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch."	34 E disse loro: L'anima mia è triste fino alla morte, rimanete qui e vegliate.
35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.	35 E inoltratosi un poco, si prostrò per terra e pregò che, se fosse possibile, da lui s'allontanasse quell'ora.
36 And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what thou wilt."	36 E diceva: Abba, Padre, tutto ti è possibile; allontana da me questo calice, però non quello che voglio io, ma quello che tu vuoi.
37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?	37 E tornato a loro li trovò addormentati. E disse a Pietro: Simone dormi? Non sei stato capace di vegliare neppure un'ora?
38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."	38 Vigilate e pregate per non cadere in tentazione; lo spirito sì, è pronto; ma la carne è debole.
39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.	39 E andò di nuovo a pregare, dicendo le stesse parole.
40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer him.	40 E tornato, li trovò ancora addormentati, che cascavano dal sonno, e non sapevano cosa rispondergli.
41 And he came the third time, and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come; the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	41 Ritornò la terza volta e disse loro: Dormite? pure e riposatevi. Basta! L'ora è giunta, ecco il Figlio dell'uomo sarà dato in mano dei peccatori.
42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."	42 Alzatevi, andiamo: ecco, chi mi tradisce è vicino.
43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	43 E mentre ancora parlava, giunse Giuda Iscariote, uno dei dodici, e con lui gran turba armata di spade e di bastoni, mandata dai sommi sacerdoti, dagli Scribi e dagli anziani.
44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him and lead him away under guard."	44 Or il traditore aveva loro dato questo segno: Chi bacierò è lui: pigliatelo e portatelo via con precauzione.
45 And when he came, he went up to him at once, and said, "Master!" And he kissed him.	45 E come arrivò, subito accostatosi a lui, disse: Salute, Maestro. E lo baciò.
46 And they laid hands on him and seized him.	46 E gli altri gli misero le mani addosso e lo catturarono.
47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.	47 Ma uno dei presenti, sfoderata la spada, ferì un servo del sommo sacerdote? e gli staccò un orecchio.
48 And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?	48 E Gesù rivoltosi a loro disse: Come fossi un ladrone, siete venuti a prendermi con spade e bastoni?
49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled."	49 Tutti i giorni ero con voi nel tempio ad insegnare e non mi arrestaste. Ma si devono adempire le Scritture.
50 And they all forsook him, and fled.	50 Allora i discepoli di lui, abbandonatolo, fuggirono tutti.
51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body; and they seized him,	51 Ma un giovanetto seguiva Gesù coperto di una veste di lino sulla nuda carne e lo presero.
52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.	52 Ma lui lasciata andare la veste, nudo se ne fuggì da loro.
53 And they led Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes were assembled.	53 E condussero Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, e vi si radunarono tutti i sacerdoti e gli Scribi e gli anziani.
54 And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, and warming himself at the fire.	54 Pietro lo seguì da lontano fm dentro il cortile del sommo sacerdote; e seduto coi servi al fuoco, si scaldava.
55 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none.	55 Intanto i sommi sacerdoti e tutto il Sinedrio cercavano testimonianze contro Gesù, per farlo morire; nè le trovavano.
56 For many bore false witness against him, and their witness did not agree.	56 Molti però deponevano il falso contro di lui, ma non concordavano le loro deposizioni.
57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,	57 Ed alcuni, alzatisi, attestarono il falso contro di lui, dicendo:
58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"	58 Lo abbiamo sentito dire: Io distruggerò questo tempio fatto colle mani, e in tre giorni ne riedificherò un altro non fatto colle mani.
59 Yet not even so did their testimony agree.	59 Ma la loro testimonianza non era concorde.
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?"	60 E alzatosi in mezzo il sommo sacerdote, domandò a Gesù: Niente rispondi a quanto da essi contro di te è testimoniato?
61 But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"	61 Ma egli tacque e nulla rispose. Da capo il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò e gli disse: Sei tu il Cristo, Figlio di Dio benedetto?
62 And Jesus said, "I am; and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."	62 E Gesù rispose: Sì, lo sono; e vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo assiso alla destra della potenza di Dio venire sulle nubi del cielo.
63 And the high priest tore his garments, and said, "Why do we still need witnesses?	63 E il sommo sacerdote, stracciatesi le vesti, esclamò: Che bisogno abbiamo più di testimoni?
64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?" And they all condemned him as deserving death.	64 Avete sentita la bestemmia? Che ve ne pare? E tutti lo condannarono come reo di morte.
65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to strike him, saying to him, "Prophesy!" And the guards received him with blows.	65 E alcuni presero a sputargli addosso e velargli la faccia e a schiaffeggiarlo, dicendogli: Indovina. E i servi gli davano delle percosse.
66 And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came;	66 Or mentre Pietro era giù nel cortile, capitò lì una serva del sommo sacerdote,
67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him, and said, "You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus."	67 e visto Pietro a scaldarsi, disse, dopo averlo squadrato: Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazareno.
68 But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you mean." And he went out into the gateway.	68 Ma egli negò, dicendo: Nè lo conosco, nè so che cosa tu voglia dire. E uscì fuori davanti all'atrio e un gallo cantò.
69 And the maid saw him, and began again to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them."	69 Ma la serva, veduto di nuovo, cominciò a dire agli astanti: Costui è di quelli.
70 But again he denied it. And after a little while again the bystanders said to Peter, "Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean."	70 E Pietro di nuovo negò. Ma di lì a poco i circostanti dissero un'altra volta a Pietro: Di sicuro, tu devi essere di quelli; difatti sei Galileo.
71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know this man of whom you speak."	71 Ed egli allora cominciò ad imprecarsi e a giurare: Non conosco l'uomo di cui parlate.
72 And immediately the cock crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.	72 E subito il gallo cantò per la seconda volta. Allora Pietro si ricordò della parola che gli aveva detta Gesù: Prima che il gallo canti la seconda volta, tu mi rinnegherai per tre volte. E si mise a piangere.
