1 Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples,	1 - Allora Gesù, rivolgendosi alle turbe e a' suoi discepoli,
2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat;	2 parlò in questo modo: «Sulla cattedra di Mosè stan seduti gli Scribi e i Farisei.
3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.	3 Fate dunque e osservate tutto ciò che vi dicono, ma non imitate le loro opere, perchè dicono e non fanno.
4 They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.	4 In verità essi mettono insieme pesanti fardelli difficili da portare e li pongono sulle spalle degli altri; ma essi non vogliono smuoverli neanche con un dito.
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,	5 Fan poi tutte l'opere loro per tirar l'attenzione della gente; perciò portano filatterie più larghe e frange più lunghe;
6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues,	6 amano i primi posti nei conviti e i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe
7 and salutations in the market places, and being called rabbi by men.	7 e i saluti nelle piazze pubbliche e d'esser chiamati dalla gente: " Rabbi ".
8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren.	8 Ma voi non fatevi chiamare Rabbi, perchè uno solo è il vostro Maestro, e voi siete tutti fratelli.
9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.	9 E non chiamate nessuno sulla terra Padre, perchè uno solo è il Padre vostro, quello che è nei cieli.
10 Neither be called masters, for you have one master, the Christ.	10 E non fatevi chiamar Maestro, perchè uno solo è il vostro Maestro, il Cristo.
11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant;	11 Il più grande tra voi, sarà vostro servo.
12 whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.	12 Chiunque si innalzerà sarà abbassato e chi si abbasserà sarà inalzato. Le invettive contro l'ipocrisia dei Farisei
13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in.	13 Guai a voi, o Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, perchè serrate il regno dei cieli in faccia agli uomini; così nè vi entrate voi, nè permettete che vi entrino quelli che vengono.
14 .	14 Guai a voi, o Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che divorate le case delle vedove e fate finta di far lunghe preghiere; per questo sarete giudicati aspramente.
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.	15 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, andate per mare e per terra pur di fare un solo proselita, e fatto che sia, lo rendete degno della Geenna il doppio di voi.
16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If any one swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'	16 Guai a voi, guide cieche, che dite: - Se un uomo giura per il tempio, non è nulla; ma s'egli giura per l'oro del tempio, resta legato dal suo giuramento. -
17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?	17 Stolti e ciechi che siete mai; cos'è più grande, l'oro o il tempio che santifica l'oro?
18 And you say, 'If any one swears by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.'	18 E - se uno giura per l'altare non è nulla; ma s'egli giura per l'offerta che vi sta sopra, resta legato dal suo giuramento. -
19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?	19 Ciechi; cos'è più grande, l'offerta o l'altare che santifica l'offerta?
20 So he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it;	20 Chi dunque giura per l'altare, giura per esso e per tutto quello che v'è sopra;
21 and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it;	21 e chi giura per il tempio giura per esso e per Colui che vi abita,
22 and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.	22 e chi giura per il cielo giura per il trono di Dio e per Colui che v'asside.
23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.	23 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che pagate la decima della menta, dell'anice e del cimino, e trascurate i più gravi della legge: la giustizia, la misericordia e la fedeltà. Queste sono le cose che bisognava fare, senza tralasciar l'altre.
24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!	24 Guide cieche che filtrate il moscerino e poi inghiottite il cammello.
25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity.	25 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, perchè pulite l'esterno del bicchiere e del piatto, mentre l'interno è colmo di rapina e d'immondezza.
26 You blind Pharisee! first cleanse the inside of the cup and of the plate, that the outside also may be clean.	26 Fariseo cieco, rimonda prima l'interno del bicchiere e del piatto, e anche l'esterno diventerà pulito.
27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.	27 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, perchè siete simili a sepolcri imbiancati, che, al di fuori appaion belli, ma dentro sono pieni di ossa di morti e d'ogni marciume.
28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.	28 Così anche voi, di fuori apparite giusti agli occhi della gente, ma di dentro siete pieni d'ipocrisia, e d'iniquità.
29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,	29 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, perchè edificate sepolcri ai profeti e abbellite le tombe dei giusti e dite:
30 saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'	30 - Se fossimo vissuti al tempo dei nostri padri, non saremmo stati lor complici nello spargere il sangue dei profeti. -
31 Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.	31 Così voi testimoniate contro voi stessi che siete discendenti di coloro che uccisero i profeti.
32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.	32 E voi colmate la misura dei vostri antenati.
33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?	33 Serpenti, razza di vipere, come sfuggirete alla condanna della Geenna?
34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,	34 Perciò, ecco, io vi mando profeti e sapienti e Scribi; e di essi ne ucciderete, e metterete in croce e flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe e li perseguirete di città in città,
35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.	35 affinchè ricada su di voi tutto il sangue giusto sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele fino al sangue di Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia, che uccideste tra il tempio e l'altare.
36 Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this generation.	36 Io vi dico in verità che tutte queste cose verranno su questa generazione.
37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!	37 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi coloro che ti son mandati, quante volte io pure volli adunare i tuoi figliuoli come la gallina raduna i suoi pulcini sotto l'ali, e tu non hai voluto!
38 Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate.	38 Ecco, la vostra casa vi sarà lasciata deserta.
39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"	39 Poich'io vi dico che non mi vedrete d'ora in poi finchè non diciate: - Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore! -».
