1 Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples,	1 Então Jesus falou às turbas e aos seus discípulos,
2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat;	2 dizendo: "Sobre a cadeira de Moisés sentaram-se os escribas e os fariseus.
3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.	3 Observai, pois, e fazei tudo o que eles vos disserem, mas não imiteis as suas acções, porque dizem e não fazem.
4 They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.	4 Atam cargas pesadas e impossíveis de levar, e as põem sobre os ombros dos outros homens, mas nem com um dedo as querem mover.
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,	5 Fazem todas as suas obras para serem vistos pelos homens. Trazem mais largas filatérias, e mais compridas as franjas dos vestidos.
6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues,	6 Gostam de ter nos banquetes os primeiros lugares, nas sinagogas as primeiras cadeiras,
7 and salutations in the market places, and being called rabbi by men.	7 as saudações na praça, e serem chamados rabi pelos homens.
8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren.	8 Mas vós não vos façais chamar rabi, porque um só é o vosso Mestre, e vós sois todos irmãos.
9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.	9 A ninguém chameis pai sobre a terra, porque um só é vosso Pai, o que está nos céus.
10 Neither be called masters, for you have one master, the Christ.	10 Nem façais que vos chamem mestres, porque um só é vosso Mestre, o Cristo.
11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant;	11 O que entre vós for o maior, será vosso servo.
12 whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.	12 Aquele que se exaltar será humilhado, e o que se humilhar será exaltado.
13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in.	13 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que fechais o reino dos céus aos homens, pois nem vós entrais, nem deixais que entrem os que estão para entrar.
14 .	14 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que devorais as casas das viúvas, a pretexto de longas orações! Por isto sereis julgados mais severamente.
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.	15 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que rodeais o mar e a terra para fazerdes um prosélito e, depois de o terdes feito, o tornais filho da geena duas vezes pior do que vós.
16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If any one swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'	16 Ai de vós, condutores cegos, que dizeis: Se alguém jurar pelo templo, isso não é nada, mas o que jurar pelo ouro do templo, fica obrigado!
17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?	17 Estultos e cegos! Qual é mais, o ouro ou o templo, que santifica o ouro?
18 And you say, 'If any one swears by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.'	18 E dizeis: Se alguém jurar pelo altar, isso não é nada, mas quem jurar pela oferenda, que está sobre ele, fica obrigado.
19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?	19 Cegos! Qual é mais, a oferta ou o altar, que santifica a oferta?
20 So he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it;	20 Aquele, pois, que jura pelo altar, jura por ele e por tudo que está sobre ele,
21 and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it;	21 e o que jura pelo templo, jura por ele e por Aquele que habita nele,
22 and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.	22 e o que jura pelo céu, jura pelo trono de Deus, e por Aquele que está sentado sobre ele.
23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.	23 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que pagais a dízima da hortelã e do endro e do cominho, e desprezais os pontos mais graves da lei: a justiça, a misericórdia e a fidelidade! São estas coisas que era preciso praticar, sem omitir as outras.
24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!	24 Condutores cegos, que filtrais um mosquito e engulis um camelo!
25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity.	25 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que limpais o que está por fora do copo e do prato, e por dentro estais cheios de rapina e de imundície.
26 You blind Pharisee! first cleanse the inside of the cup and of the plate, that the outside also may be clean.	26 Fariseu cego, purifica primeiro o que está dentro do copo e do prato, para que também o que está fora fique limpo.
27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.	27 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que sois semelhantes aos sepulcros branqueados, que por fora parecem formosos, mas por dentro estão cheios de ossos de mortos e de toda a sorte de podridão!
28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.	28 Assim também vós por fora pareceis justos aos homens, mas por dentro estais cheios de hipocrisia e iniquidade.
29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,	29 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus hipócritas, que edificais os sepulcros dos profetas, e adornais os monumentos dos justos,
30 saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'	30 e dizeis: Se nós tivéssemos vivido nos dias de nossos pais, não teríamos sido seus cúmplices no sangue dos profetas!
31 Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.	31 Assim dais testemunho contra vós mesmos de que sois filhos daqueles que mataram os profetas.
32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.	32 Acabai pois de encher a medida de vossos pais.
33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?	33 Serpentes, raça de víboras! Como escapareis da condenação ao inferno?
34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,	34 Por isso, eis que eu vos envio profetas, sábios e escribas; matareis e crucificareis uns, e açoutareis outros nas vossas sinagogas, e os perseguireis de cidade em cidade,
35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.	35 para que caia sobre vós todo o sangue justo que se tem derramado sobre a terra, desde o sangue do justo Abel até ao sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, a quem matastes entre o templo e o altar.
36 Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this generation.	36 Em verdade vos digo que tudo isto virá sobre esta geração.
37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!	37 Jerusalém, Jerusalém, que matas os profetas e apedrejas os que te são enviados, quantas vezes eu quis juntar teus filhos, como a galinha recolhe debaixo das asas os seus pintos, e tu não quiseste!
38 Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate.	38 Eis que será deixada deserta a vossa casa (Je. 22, 5).
39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"	39 Porque eu vos digo: Desde agora não me tomareis a ver, até que digais: Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor (Ps. 117, 26)."
