1 "Behold, I send my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.	1 Ecco io mando il mio messaggero ed egli sgombra la via davanti a me; subito viene al suo tempio il Signore che voi bramate; e l’angelo dell’alleanza che voi sospirate di vedere ecco, viene: dice Jahvè degli eserciti.
2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? "For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap;	2 Ora chi potrà sopportare il giorno della sua venuta? Chi reggerà al suo apparire? Poiché egli è come il fuoco del raffinatore e come il ranno dei lavandai.
3 he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, till they present right offerings to the LORD.	3 Ed egli siederà da raffinatore e purificatore d’argento: e purificherà i figli di Levi e li colerà come oro e argento, in modo che diventino tali da poter offrire a Jahvè l’oblazione in giustizia.
4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.	4 Allora a Jahvè piacerà l’oblazione di Giuda e di Gerusalemme come nei giorni antichi e negli anni precedenti.
5 "Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.	5 E mi accosterò a voi per il giudizio e sarò un testimonio sbrigativo, contro gli stregoni e gli adulteri e contro coloro che giurano il falso; contro coloro che opprimono il' salariato, la vedova e l’orfano, che fanno violenza al forestiero, mostrando così di non temermi: dice Jahvè degli eserciti.
6 "For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.	6 Sì, io, Jahvè, non mi sono,mutato, mentre voi, figli di Giacobbe, non siete ancora al termine.
7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, 'How shall we return?'	7 Fino dai tempi dei vostri padri vi siete allontanati dai miei precetti e non li avete mantenuti: tornate a me: così io tornerò a voi, dice Jahvè degli eserciti. Voi dite: «Come ritorneremo?»
8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, 'How are we robbing thee?' In your tithes and offerings.	8 Può dunque l’uomo derubare Dio? — poiché voi tentate di derubare me — Voi dite: «In che cosa ti abbiamo derubato?» Nelle decime e nelle offerte.
9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me; the whole nation of you.	9 Voi siete colpiti di maledizione, eppure mi derubate: voi, tutto il popolo!
10 Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.	10 Portate tutte le decime alla casa del tesoro, così che ci sia cibo nella mia casa; e mettetemi alla prova con questo, dice Jahvè degli eserciti: se io non apro per voi le cateratte del cielo e non rovescio per voi benedizione in sovrabbondanza.
11 I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil; and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts.	11 Terrò lontano da voi il divoratore, in modo che esso più non vi rovini il frutto della terra, e più non sia infruttuosa per voi la vite in campagna: dice Jahvè degli eserciti.
12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.	12 Tutte le genti vi chiameranno felici, poiché voi sarete un paese di delizia: dice Jahvè degli eserciti.
13 "Your words have been stout against me, says the LORD. Yet you say, 'How have we spoken against thee?'	13 Le vostre parole sono provocatorie verso di me, dice Jahvè. Voi dite: «Che cosa ci siamo detti contro di te?»
14 You have said, 'It is vain to serve God. What is the good of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the LORD of hosts?	14 Dite: «È fatica sprecata servire Dio;che vantaggio per aver osservato i suoi regolamenti e camminato in abito di lutto al cospetto di Jahvè degli eserciti?
15 Henceforth we deem the arrogant blessed; evildoers not only prosper but when they put God to the test they escape.'"	15 Anzi noi dichiariamo fortunati gli empi:sì, stanno magnificamente coloro che agiscono da scellerati; perfino mettono alla prova Dio e ne escono impuniti».
16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another; the LORD heeded and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and thought on his name.	16 Allora parlarono tra di loro coloro che temono Jahvè l’un l’altro: Jahvè stava attento e sentiva. Fu scritto un libro di memorie al suo cospetto per coloro che temono Jahvè e hanno in onore il suo nome.
17 "They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my special possession on the day when I act, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.	17 Saranno per me, dice Jahvè degli eserciti una proprietà particolare, quando prenderò ad agire ma quanto a loro li risparmierò come un uomo risparmia il figlio che lo serve.
18 Then once more you shall distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.	18 Allora vedrete di nuovo la differenza tra il giusto e l’empio, tra colui che serve Dio e colui che non lo serve.
	19 Poiché ecco quel giorno viene avvampante come un forno: faranno da paglia tutti gli empi e tutti coloro che agiscono da scellerati; il giorno che viene li metterà in fiamme, dice Jahvè degli eserciti, così da non lasciare loro né radice né ramo.
	20 Allora spunterà per voi che temete il mio nome il sole della giustizia e la guarigione sarà sulle sue ali: uscirete e saltellerete, come vitelli da stalla.
	21 E calpesterete i malvagi poiché diventeranno cenere sotto la pianta dei vostri piedi, in quel giorno in cui io agirò dice Jahvè degli eserciti.
	22 Ricordate la legge di Mosè mio servitore, cui ho dato l’incarico sull’Horeb, per tutto Israele, dei precetti e degli ordinamenti.
	23 Ecco, io vi manderò Elia il profeta, prima che venga il giorno di Jahvè, quello grande e terribile,
	24 affinché volga il cuore dei padri verso i figli e il cuore dei figli verso i padri: così che io venendo non abbia a colpire di anatema il paese.
