1 The LORD said to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho,	1 Der Herr sprach zu Moses in den Steppen Moabs am Jordan bei Jericho:
2 "Command the people of Israel, that they give to the Levites, from the inheritance of their possession, cities to dwell in; and you shall give to the Levites pasture lands round about the cities.	2 "Befiehl den Israeliten, von ihrem Erbbesitz den Leviten Städte zur Wohnung zu geben, auch das zu den Städten ringsum gehörende Weideland!
3 The cities shall be theirs to dwell in, and their pasture lands shall be for their cattle and for their livestock and for all their beasts.	3 Die Städte sollen ihnen als Wohnsitz dienen, die zugehörigen Weidetriften sind für ihr Vieh, ihre Herden und alle ihre Tiere.
4 The pasture lands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city outward a thousand cubits all round.	4 Die zu den Städten gehörigen Weidetriften, die ihr den Leviten geben sollt, mögen sich von der Stadtmauer nach außen hin tausend Ellen weit im Umkreis erstrecken.
5 And you shall measure, outside the city, for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle; this shall belong to them as pasture land for their cities.	5 Meßt außerhalb der Stadt auf der Ostseite zweitausend Ellen ab, auf der Süd-, West- und Nordseite desgleichen; die Stadt selbst liege also in der Mitte. Dies soll ihnen als Weideland bei den Städten zufallen.
6 The cities which you give to the Levites shall be the six cities of refuge, where you shall permit the manslayer to flee, and in addition to them you shall give forty-two cities.	6 Die Städte aber, die ihr den Leviten zu geben habt, seien sechs Asylstädte, damit der Totschläger dorthin entfliehen kann; außerdem sollt ihr noch 42 Städte hergeben.
7 All the cities which you give to the Levites shall be forty-eight, with their pasture lands.	7 Die Gesamtzahl der Städte, die ihr den Leviten zuteilen sollt, betrage 48, und zwar die Städte selbst und das zugehörige Weideland.
8 And as for the cities which you shall give from the possession of the people of Israel, from the larger tribes you shall take many, and from the smaller tribes you shall take few; each, in proportion to the inheritance which it inherits, shall give of its cities to the Levites."	8 Die Zahl der Städte aber, die ihr vom Besitz der Israeliten abgeben müßt, sollt ihr bei größeren Stämmen höher, bei kleineren niederer ansetzen; jeder soll entsprechend seinem Besitz, den er bekommt, von seinen Städten den Leviten abgeben."
9 And the LORD said to Moses,	9 Der Herr redete zu Moses:
10 "Say to the people of Israel, When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,	10 "Sprich zu den Israeliten und sage ihnen: Wenn ihr über den Jordan in das Land Kanaan hineinkommt,
11 then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person without intent may flee there.	11 so sucht euch Städte aus, die Zufluchtsstädte für euch seien; wer einen Totschlag begangen, d. h. ohne Absicht einen Menschen getötet hat, soll dorthin fliehen können!
12 The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.	12 Die Städte sollen euch als Zuflucht vor dem Bluträcher dienen, damit der Totschläger nicht getötet wird, ehe er vor der Gemeinde zur Aburteilung gestanden hat.
13 And the cities which you give shall be your six cities of refuge.	13 Was die abzugebenden Städte betrifft, so sollt ihr sechs Asylstädte haben!
14 You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, to be cities of refuge.	14 Drei Städte sollt ihr jenseits des Jordans hergeben, drei Städte im Lande Kanaan; sie sollen als Asylstädte dienen!
15 These six cities shall be for refuge for the people of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, that any one who kills any person without intent may flee there.	15 Den Israeliten, den Fremdlingen und Beisassen unter ihnen sollen diese sechs Städte zur Zuflucht dienen, damit jeder dorthin fliehen kann, der unvorsätzlich einen Menschen getötet hat.
16 "But if he struck him down with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.	16 Hat jemand einen mit einem eisernen Gegenstand so geschlagen, daß er starb, dann ist er ein Mörder. Der Mörder muß des Todes sterben.
17 And if he struck him down with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.	17 Hat er ihn mit einem Schleuderstein, durch den der Tod herbeigeführt werden kann, so getroffen, daß er starb, dann ist er ein Mörder. Der Mörder muß des Todes sterben.
18 Or if he struck him down with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.	18 Hat er ihn mit einem hölzernen Gerät in seiner Hand, das den Tod verursachen kann, so getroffen, daß er starb, dann ist er ein Mörder. Der Mörder muß des Todes sterben.
19 The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.	19 Der Bluträcher aber soll den Mörder töten. Trifft er ihn an, so mag er ihn töten.
20 And if he stabbed him from hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died,	20 Hat jemand einem anderen aus Haß einen Stoß versetzt oder nach ihm absichtlich geworfen, so daß er starb,
21 or in enmity struck him down with his hand, so that he died, then he who struck the blow shall be put to death; he is a murderer; the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death, when he meets him.	21 oder hat er ihm aus feindseliger Gesinnung einen Faustschlag versetzt, so daß er starb, so soll derjenige, der ihn geschlagen hat, mit dem Tode bestraft werden. Er ist ein Mörder. Der Bluträcher soll den Mörder töten, sobald er ihn antrifft.
22 "But if he stabbed him suddenly without enmity, or hurled anything on him without lying in wait,	22 Hat er ihm aber unversehens, ohne Feindschaft, einen Stoß versetzt oder auf ihn unabsichtlich irgendeinen Gegenstand geworfen,
23 or used a stone, by which a man may die, and without seeing him cast it upon him, so that he died, though he was not his enemy, and did not seek his harm;	23 oder hat er einen Stein, durch den der Tod herbeigeführt werden kann, ohne es zu sehen, auf ihn fallen lassen, so daß er starb - er war ihm aber durchaus nicht feindselig gesinnt und wollte ihm nichts Böses zufügen -,
24 then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood, in accordance with these ordinances;	24 dann soll die Gemeinde zwischen dem Totschläger und dem Bluträcher auf Grund dieser Rechtssatzungen eine richterliche Entscheidung herbeiführen!
25 and the congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, to which he had fled, and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.	25 Die Gemeinde schütze den Totschläger vor des Bluträchers Gewalt und bringe ihn zurück in seine Asylstadt, wohin er geflohen war. Darin bleibt er bis zum Tode des Hohenpriesters, den man mit dem heiligen Öle gesalbt hat.
26 But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the bounds of his city of refuge to which he fled,	26 Verläßt aber der Totschläger den Bereich seiner Asylstadt, wohin er geflohen war,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the bounds of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slays the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood.	27 und trifft ihn der Bluträcher außerhalb des Bereiches seiner Asylstadt an, so lädt der Bluträcher keine Blutschuld auf sich, wenn er den Totschläger tötet.
28 For the man must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.	28 Jener muß in seiner Asylstadt bis zum Tode des Hohenpriesters bleiben. Nach dessen Tode aber darf der Totschläger dahin zurückkehren, wo sein Erbbesitz ist.
29 "And these things shall be for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.	29 Dies soll euch als Rechtssatzung gelten von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht in all euren Wohnstätten!
30 If any one kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses; but no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.	30 Erschlägt jemand einen Menschen, so darf man den Mörder nur auf Grund von Zeugenaussagen hinrichten. Doch soll auf die Aussage eines einzigen Zeugen hin niemand die Todesstrafe erleiden.
31 Moreover you shall accept no ransom for the life of a murderer, who is guilty of death; but he shall be put to death.	31 Ihr sollt für das Leben eines Mörders, der des Todes schuldig ist, kein Lösegeld annehmen; er muß des Todes sterben.
32 And you shall accept no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the high priest.	32 Auch dürft ihr, wenn einer in seine Asylstadt geflohen ist, kein Lösegeld zu dem Zwecke annehmen, daß er noch vor dem Tode des Hohenpriesters wieder heimkehren und in seinem Lande wohnen kann.
33 You shall not thus pollute the land in which you live; for blood pollutes the land, and no expiation can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of him who shed it.	33 Entweiht nicht das Land, in dem ihr wohnt! Denn Blut entweiht das Land, und dem Lande wird keine Sühne verschafft für das Blut, das in ihm vergossen ward, es sei denn durch das Blut dessen, der es vergossen hat.
34 You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the LORD dwell in the midst of the people of Israel."	34 Befleckt also nicht das Land, in dem ihr wohnt und in dessen Mitte auch ich wohne! Denn ich, der Herr, wohne inmitten der Söhne Israels!"
