Jeremiah 2

1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,	1 E il Signore parlommi, dicendo:
2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the LORD, I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.	2 Va, e grida alle orecchie di Gerusalemme, dicendo: Queste cose dice il Signore: Io mi son ricordato di te, avendo pietà di tua adolescenza, dell'amore del tuo sposalizio, allorché seguitasti me nel deserto, in quella terra, che non si semina.
3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the first fruits of his harvest. All who ate of it became guilty; evil came upon them, says the LORD."	3 Israele è consagrato al Signore; egli è suo frutto primaticcio. Quei che lo divorano, son rei di peccato: le sciagure tutte verran sopra di essi, dice il Signore.
4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.	4 Udite la Parola del Signore, casa di Giacobbe, e voi tutte, o famiglie della stirpe d'Israele:
5 Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?	5 Queste cose dice il Signore: Qual ingiustizia trovarono in me i padri vostri quando si allontanaron da me, e andarono dietro alla vanità, e diventarono vani?
6 They did not say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?'	6 E non dissero: Dov'è il Signore, che ci fece uscire dalla terra d'Egitto; che ci condusse per mezzo al deserto, per una terra disabitata, e impraticabile, per una terra assetata, immagine della morte, per una terra, dove non passò uomo, né uomo alcuno vi pose stanza?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.	7 Ed io vi feci entrare in una fertilissima terra, affinchè mangiaste i frutti di essa, e le sue delizie: e voi entrati vi, profanaste la terra mia, e della mia eredità ne faceste una abbominazione.
8 The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.	8 I sacerdoti non hanno detto: Dov'è il Signore? e i custodi della legge non mi han conosciuto, e i pastori hanno prevaricato contro di me: e i profeti hanno profetato nel nome di Baal, e son' andati dietro agl'idoli.
9 "Therefore I still contend with you, says the LORD, and with your children's children I will contend.	9 Per questo io contenderò in giudizio con voi, dice il Signore, e disputerò co' vostri figliuoli.
10 For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing.	10 Trasportatevi alle isole di Cethim, ed informatevi; mandate a Cedar, ed esaminate diligentemente, e notate se cosa tale è avvenuta.
11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.	11 Se alcuna di quelle genti cambiò suoi dei, e certamente ei non son dei: E il popol mio ha cambiato la sua gloria in un idolo.
12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the LORD,	12 Stupite, o cieli, e inorridiscano fuor di modo le porte del cielo sopra tal fatto, dice il Signore.
13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.	13 Imperocché due mali ha fatti il popol mio: hanno abbandonato me fontana di acqua viva, e sono andati a scavarsi delle cisterne, delle cisterne, che gemono, e contener non possono le acque.
14 "Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey?	14 Israele è egli forse uno schiavo, o figliuol di una schiava? Per qual motivo adunque è egli messo a sacco manno?
15 The lions have roared against him, they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.	15 I lioni ruggirono contro di lui, alzarono la loro voce: la terra di lui è ridotta un deserto: le sue città sono incendiate, e prive di abitatori.
16 Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head.	16 I figliuoli stessi di Memphi, e di Taphnes ti hanno coperta di obbrobrio fino alla cima del capo.
17 Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the LORD your God, when he led you in the way?	17 E non è egli ciò avvenuto a te, perchè hai abbandonato il Signor Dio tuo nel tempo, che egli era tua guida nel tuo viaggio?
18 And now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?	18 E adesso, che pretendi tu coll'andare verso l'Egitto a bere acqua torbida? E che hai tu a fare coll'andare verso gli Assirj a bere l'acqua dell'Eufrate?
19 Your wickedness will chasten you, and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the LORD your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord GOD of hosts.	19 Tua condannazione sarà la tua malvagità, e la tua ribellione griderà contro di te. Riconosci alla prova, come mala cosa, e dolorosa ella è, che tu abbi abbandonato il Signore Dio tuo,e che il mio timore non sia in te, dice il Signore Dio degli eserciti.
20 "For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, 'I will not serve.' Yea, upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down as a harlot.	20 Già da gran tempo tu spezzasti il mio giogo, rompesti i miei legami, e dicesti: Non servirò. Imperocché in ogni alto colle, e sotto ogni ombrosa pianta sfacciata donna peccasti.
21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?	21 Ma io ti piantai vigna eletta di magliuoli tutti di buona natura: come adunque hai tu dato in cattivo, o vigna bastarda?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, says the Lord GOD.	22 Quando tu ti lavassi col nitro, e facessi uso continuo dell'erba borith, dinanzi a me tu se' sordida per la tua iniquità, dice il Signore Dio.
23 How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done--a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,	23 E come dici tu: Io non sono contaminata, non sono andata dietro a Baal? Mira le tue vestigia là in quella valle, rifletti a quello, che hai fatto, agile barbero, che va girando per le sue strade.
24 a wild ass used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her.	24 Asina salvaggia avvezza al deserto, la quale accesa dalle sue brame va dietro all'odore di quello, che ama. Niuno può rattenerla. Tutti quegli, che vanno in cerca di lei non avran gran fatica, la troveranno a segni di sue sordidezze.
25 Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.'	25 Tieni guardato il tuo piede dalla nudità, e la tua gola dalla sete. Ma tu hai detto: Non ho più speranza: io nol farò; imperocché io ho amato gli stranieri, e anderò dietro a loro.
26 "As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,	26 Come rimane confuso un ladro quand'è colto nel furto; così son rimasti confusi i figliuoli d'Israele, egli no, e i loro regi, principi, e i sacerdoti, e i loro profeti,
27 who say to a tree, 'You are my father,' and to a stone, 'You gave me birth.' For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say, 'Arise and save us!'	27 I quali dicevano al legno: Tu se' il padre mio: e alla pietra: Tu mi hai generato. Voltarono a me le spalle, e non la faccia; e al tempo della loro afflizione diranno: Levati su, e salvaci.
28 But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you, in your time of trouble; for as many as your cities are your gods, O Judah.	28 Dove sono i tuoi dei, che tu ti facesti? Sorgano, e ti salvino al tempo di tua afflizione. Imperocché i tuoi dei, o Giuda, erano tanti, quante le tue città.
29 "Why do you complain against me? You have all rebelled against me, says the LORD.	29 Perchè mai volete voi disputarla meco in giudizio? Tutti voi avete abbandonato me, dice il Signore.
30 In vain have I smitten your children, they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.	30 Senza frutto io gastigai i vostri figliuoli, non dieder luogo alla correzione. La vostra spada divorò i vostri profeti: fu, come lion che devasta, la vostra stirpe.
31 And you, O generation, heed the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, 'We are free, we will come no more to thee?	31 Ponete mente a quello, che dice il Signore: Son'io stato forse per Israele un deserto, o una terra a bacio? Per qual motivo adunque ha egli detto il mio popolo: Noi ci ritiriamo: noi non verrem più da te?
32 Can a maiden forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.	32 Si scorderà ella una fanciulla de' suoi ornamenti, od una sposa della fascia, che stringe il suo petto? Ma il mio popolo si è scordato di me per in numerabili giorni.
33 "How well you direct your course to seek lovers! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.	33 Per qual motivo ti sforzi tu di far vedere, che i tuoi andamenti son retti per guadagnarti amore, mentre tu hai eziandio insegnato altrui i tuoi costumi malvagi?
34 Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things	34 E nelle falde della tua veste si è trovato il sangue delle anime poverelle, e innocenti. Li trovai (uccisi) non nelle fosse, ma per tutte le cose, che ho già dette.
35 you say, 'I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.' Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying, 'I have not sinned.'	35 Ed hai detto: Senza peccato son io, e innocente; e perciò si allontani il tuo furore da me. Ecco che io disputerò teco in giudizio, perchè tu hai detto: Non ho peccato.
36 How lightly you gad about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.	36 Quanto vile tu se' diventata tornando a calcar le tue vie! Tu sarai burlata dall'Egitto, come fosti burlata da Assur;
37 From it too you will come away with your hands upon your head, for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.	37 Imperocché dall'Egitto ancor tornerai colle mani giunte sopra la testa: perchè il Signore ha distrutta la tua fidanza, e nulla ivi ti succederà felicemente.
