Jeremiah 2

1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,	1 La palabra del Señor llegó a mí en estos términos:
2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the LORD, I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.	2 Ve a gritar a los oídos de Jerusalén: Así habla el Señor: Recuerdo muy bien la fidelidad de tu juventud, el amor de tus desposorios, cuando me seguías por el desierto, por una tierra sin cultivar.
3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the first fruits of his harvest. All who ate of it became guilty; evil came upon them, says the LORD."	3 Israel era algo sagrado para el Señor, las primicias de tu cosecha: todos los que comían de él se hacían culpables, les sobrevenía una desgracia –oráculo del Señor –
4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.	4 ¡Escuchen la palabra del Señor, casa de Jacob, y todas las familias de la casa de Israel!
5 Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?	5 Así habla el Señor: ¿Qué injusticia encontraron en mí sus padres para que se alejaran de mí y fueran detrás de ídolos vanos, volviéndose así vanos ellos mismos?
6 They did not say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?'	6 Ellos no preguntaron: «¿Donde está el Señor, que nos hizo subir del país de Egipto, el que nos condujo por el desierto, por una tierra de estepas y barrancos, por una tierra árida y tenebrosa, por una tierra que nadie atraviesa y donde no habita ningún hombre?».
7 And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.	7 Yo los hice entrar en un país de vergeles, para que comieran de sus frutos y sus bienes; pero ustedes entraron y contaminaron mi país e hicieron de mi herencia una abominación.
8 The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.	8 Los sacerdotes no preguntaron: «¿Dónde está el Señor?, los depositarios de la Ley no me conocieron, los pastores se rebelaron contra mí, los profetas profetizaron en nombre de Baal y fueron detrás de los que no sirven de nada.
9 "Therefore I still contend with you, says the LORD, and with your children's children I will contend.	9 Por eso, voy a entrar todavía en pleito con ustedes –oráculo del Señor– y también con los hijos de sus hijos.
10 For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing.	10 ¡Sí, crucen a las costas de los Quitím y miren, envíen gente a Quedar y fíjense bien, a ver si ha sucedido una cosa igual!
11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.	11 ¿Cambia de dioses una nación? –¡y sin embargo, esos no son dioses!–. Pero mi pueblo ha cambiado su Gloria por algo que no sirve de nada.
12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the LORD,	12 ¡Espántense de esto, cielos, horrorícense y queden paralizados! –oráculo del Señor–.
13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.	13 Porque mi pueblo ha cometido dos maldades: me abandonaron a mí, la fuente de agua viva, para cavarse cisternas, cisternas agrietadas, que no retienen el agua.
14 "Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey?	14 ¿Acaso Israel fue adquirido como esclavo o nació en la esclavitud? ¿Por qué entonces se ha convertido en una presa?
15 The lions have roared against him, they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.	15 Los cachorros de león rugen contra él, hacen oír sus bramidos, han hecho de su país una desolación, sus ciudades son incendiadas, se quedan sin habitantes.
16 Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head.	16 ¡Hasta los hijos de Nof y de Tafnes te han rapado el cráneo!
17 Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the LORD your God, when he led you in the way?	17 ¿Acaso no te sucede todo esto, por haber abandonado al Señor, tu Dios, mientras él te conducía por el camino?
18 And now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?	18 Y Ahora, ¿por qué tienes que tomar el camino de Egipto para beber el agua del Sijor? ¿Por qué tienes que tomar el camino de Asiria para beber el agua del Río?
19 Your wickedness will chasten you, and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the LORD your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord GOD of hosts.	19 ¡Que tu propia maldad te corrija y tus apostasías te sirvan de escarmiento! Reconoce, entonces, y mira qué cosa tan mala y amarga es abandonar al Señor, tu Dios, y dejar de temerme –oráculo del Señor de los ejércitos –
20 "For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, 'I will not serve.' Yea, upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down as a harlot.	20 Sí, hace mucho que has quebrado tu yugo, has roto tus ataduras y has dicho: «¡No serviré». Sí, sobre toda colina elevada y bajo todo árbol frondoso, te has acostado, te has prostituido.
21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?	21 ¡Y eso que yo te había plantado con cepas escogidas, todas de simiente genuina! ¿Cómo entonces te has vuelto una planta degenerada, una viña bastarda?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, says the Lord GOD.	22 Por más que te laves con potasa y no mezquines la lejía, permanecerá la mancha de iniquidad ante mi –oráculo del Señor–.
23 How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done--a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,	23 ¿Cómo puedes decir: «No me he contaminado, no he ido detrás de los Baales»? Mira tu conducta en el Valle, reconoce lo que has hechos. ¡Camella veloz, que va de un lado para otro!
24 a wild ass used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her.	24 ¡Asna salvaje, habituada al desierto! En el ardor de su deseo aspira el viento: ¿quién puede refrenar su ansiedad? Los que la buscan no necesitan fatigarse, en su tiempo de celo se la encuentra.
25 Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.'	25 No dejes que tus pies queden descalzos ni que tu garganta sienta sed. Pero tú dices: «¡No hay nada que hacer! ¡No! A mí gustan los extranjeros y quiero ir detrás de ellos».
26 "As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,	26 Como se turba un ladrón al ser sorprendido, así quedarán turbados los de la casa de Israel, ellos, sus reyes y sus príncipes, sus sacerdotes y sus profetas,
27 who say to a tree, 'You are my father,' and to a stone, 'You gave me birth.' For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say, 'Arise and save us!'	27 lo que dicen a un trozo de madera: «Tú me has dado a luz!» Porque ellos me vuelven la espalda, no la cara, y después, en el tiempo de su desgracia, dicen: «¡Levántate y sálvanos!».
28 But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you, in your time of trouble; for as many as your cities are your gods, O Judah.	28 ¿Dónde están tus dioses, esos que te has fabricado? ¡Que se levante, si es que pueden salvarte en el tiempo de tu desgracia! Porque tan numerosos como tus ciudades son tus dioses, Judá.
29 "Why do you complain against me? You have all rebelled against me, says the LORD.	29 ¿Por qué me recriminan, si todos ustedes se han rebelado contra mí? –oráculo del Señor–.
30 In vain have I smitten your children, they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.	30 En vano he golpeado a los hijos de ustedes: ellos no aprendieron la lección; la espada de ustedes devoró a sus profetas como un león que lo destruye todo.
31 And you, O generation, heed the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, 'We are free, we will come no more to thee?	31 ¡Qué clase de gente son ustedes! Vean lo que dice el Señor: ¿Acaso he sido yo para Israel un desierto o una tierra tenebrosa? ¿Por qué dice mi pueblo: «Somos libres, ya no acudiremos a ti»?
32 Can a maiden forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.	32 ¿Olvida una joven sus atavíos, una novia sus ceñidores? ¡Pero mi pueblo se ha olvidado de mí hace ya un sinnúmero de días!
33 "How well you direct your course to seek lovers! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.	33 ¡Qué bien te abres camino para ir en busca del amor! Así, también tú te has habituado a los caminos de la maldad.
34 Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things	34 Hasta en los bordes de tu vestido se encuentra sangre de gente pobre, inocente, que tú no habías sorprendido perforando una pared. Y a pesar de todo esto,
35 you say, 'I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.' Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying, 'I have not sinned.'	35 tú dices: «Sí, soy inocente, seguramente su ira se ha apartado de mí». Pero yo entro en juicio contigo, porque tú dices: «No tengo pecado».
36 How lightly you gad about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.	36 ¡Con qué ligereza cambias de camino! También serás defraudada por Egipto, como lo fuiste por Asiria.
37 From it too you will come away with your hands upon your head, for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.	37 También de allí tendrás que salir con las manos sobre tu cabeza, porque el Señor ha rechazado a aquellos en los confías, y no te irá bien con ellos.
