Jeremiah 2

1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,	1 LA parola del Signore mi fu ancora indirizzata, dicendo:
2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the LORD, I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.	2 Va’, e grida agli orecchi di Gerusalemme, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signore: Io mi ricordo di te, della benignità che io usai inverso te nella tua giovanezza, dell’amore che io ti portava nel tempo delle tue sponsalizie, quando tu comminavi dietro a me per lo deserto, per terra non seminata.
3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the first fruits of his harvest. All who ate of it became guilty; evil came upon them, says the LORD."	3 Israele era una cosa santa al Signore, le primizie della sua rendita; tutti quelli che lo divoravano erano colpevoli, male ne avveniva loro, dice il Signore.
4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.	4 Ascoltate la parola del Signore, casa di Giacobbe, e voi tutte le famiglie della casa d’Israele.
5 Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?	5 Così ha detto il Signore: Quale iniquità hanno trovata i vostri padri in me, che si sono allontanati da me, e sono andati dietro alla vanità, e son divenuti vani?
6 They did not say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?'	6 E non hanno detto: Dove è il Signore, che ci ha tratti fuor del paese di Egitto; che ci ha condotti per lo deserto; per un paese di solitudine e di sepolcri; per un paese di aridità, e d’ombra di morte; per un paese, per lo quale non passò mai, ed ove non abitò mai alcuno?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.	7 Or io vi ho menati in un paese di Carmel, per mangiar del suo frutto, e de’ suoi beni; ma voi, essendovi entrati, avete contaminata la mia terra, ed avete renduta abbominevole la mia eredità.
8 The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.	8 I sacerdoti non hanno detto: Dove è il Signore? e quelli che trattano la Legge non mi han conosciuto, e i pastori hanno commesso misfatto contro a me, ed i profeti hanno profetizzato per Baal, e sono andati dietro a cose che non giovano nulla
9 "Therefore I still contend with you, says the LORD, and with your children's children I will contend.	9 Perciò, io contenderò ancora con voi, dice il Signore; e contenderò co’ figliuoli de’ vostri figliuoli.
10 For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing.	10 Perciocchè, passate nell’isole di Chittim, e riguardate; mandate in Chedar e considerate bene, e vedete se avvenne mai una cotal cosa.
11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.	11 Evvi gente alcuna che abbia mutati i suoi dii, i quali però non son dii? ma il mio popolo ha mutata la sua gloria in ciò che non giova nulla.
12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the LORD,	12 Cieli, siate attoniti di questo, ed abbiatene orrore; siatene grandemente desolati, dice il Signore.
13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.	13 Perciocchè il mio popolo ha fatti due mali: hanno abbandonato me, fonte d’acqua viva, per cavarsi delle cisterne, cisterne rotte, che non ritengono l’acqua
14 "Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey?	14 Israele è egli servo? è egli uno schiavo nato in casa? perchè dunque è egli in preda?
15 The lions have roared against him, they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.	15 I leoncelli han ruggito, ed hanno messe le lor grida contro a lui, ed hanno ridotto il suo paese in desolazione; le sue città sono state arse, senza che alcuno vi abiti più.
16 Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head.	16 Eziandio i figliuoli di Nof, e di Tahafnes, ti fiaccheranno la sommità del capo.
17 Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the LORD your God, when he led you in the way?	17 Non sei tu quella che fai questo a te stessa, abbandonando il Signore Iddio tuo, nel tempo ch’egli ti conduce per lo cammino?
18 And now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?	18 Ed ora, che hai tu a fare per lo cammino di Egitto, per bere dell’acque di Sihor? ovvero, che hai tu a fare per lo cammino di Assiria, per bere dell’acque del Fiume?
19 Your wickedness will chasten you, and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the LORD your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord GOD of hosts.	19 La tua malvagità ti castigherà, ed i tuoi sviamenti ti condanneranno; e tu saprai, e vedrai ch’egli è una mala ed amara cosa, che tu abbia lasciato il Signore Iddio tuo, e che lo spavento di me non sia in te, dice il Signore Iddio degli eserciti
20 "For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, 'I will not serve.' Yea, upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down as a harlot.	20 Perciocchè io già ab antico avea spezzato il tuo giogo, e rotti i tuoi legami; tu hai detto: Io non sarò mai più serva; perciocchè tu scorri fornicando sopra ogni alto colle, e sotto ogni albero verdeggiante.
21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?	21 Or ti avea io piantata di viti nobili, di una generazione vera tutta quanta; e come mi ti sei mutata in tralci tralignanti di vite strana?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, says the Lord GOD.	22 Avvegnachè tu ti lavi col nitro, ed usi attorno a te assai erba di purgatori di panni; pure è la tua iniquità suggellata nel mio cospetto, dice il Signore Iddio.
23 How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done--a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,	23 Come diresti: Io non mi sono contaminata? io non sono andata dietro ai Baali? Riguarda il tuo procedere nella valle, riconosci quello che tu hai fatto, o dromedaria leggiera, che involvi le tue vie;
24 a wild ass used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her.	24 asina salvatica, avvezza a star nel deserto, che sorbisce il vento a sua voglia; chi potrebbe stornare una sua opportunità? niuno di quelli che la cercano si stancherà per trovarla; la troveranno nel suo mese.
25 Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.'	25 Rattieni il tuo piè, che non sia scalzo; e la tua gola, che non abbia sete; ma tu hai detto: Non vi è rimedio, no; perciocchè io amo gli stranieri, ed andrò dietro a loro.
26 "As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,	26 Come è confuso il ladro, quando è colto, così sarà confusa la casa d’Israele; essi, i loro re, i lor principi, i lor sacerdoti, ed i lor profeti;
27 who say to a tree, 'You are my father,' and to a stone, 'You gave me birth.' For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say, 'Arise and save us!'	27 che dicono al legno: Tu sei mio padre; ed alla pietra: Tu ci hai generati. Conciossiachè mi abbiano volte le spalle, e non la faccia; e pure, al tempo della loro avversità, dicono: Levati, e salvaci.
28 But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you, in your time of trouble; for as many as your cities are your gods, O Judah.	28 Ma, dove sono i tuoi dii, che tu ti hai fatti? levinsi, se pur ti potranno salvare al giorno della tua avversità; perciocchè, o Giuda, tu hai avuti tanti dii, quante città
29 "Why do you complain against me? You have all rebelled against me, says the LORD.	29 Perchè contendereste meco? voi tutti vi siete portati dislealmente inverso me, dice il Signore.
30 In vain have I smitten your children, they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.	30 Indarno ho percossi i vostri figliuoli; non hanno ricevuta correzione; la vostra spada ha divorati i vostri profeti, a guisa d’un leone guastatore.
31 And you, O generation, heed the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, 'We are free, we will come no more to thee?	31 O generazione, considerate voi stessi la parola del Signore; sono io stato ad Israele un deserto? sono io stato una terra caliginosa? perchè ha detto il mio popolo: Noi siamo signori; non verremo più a te?
32 Can a maiden forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.	32 La vergine dimenticherà ella i suoi ornamenti, o la sposa i suoi fregi? ma il mio popolo mi ha dimenticato, già da giorni innumerabili.
33 "How well you direct your course to seek lovers! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.	33 Perchè ti rendi così vezzosa nel tuo procedere, per procacciare amore? laonde tu hai insegnati i tuoi costumi, eziandio alle malvage femmine.
34 Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things	34 Oltre a ciò, ne’ tuoi lembi si è trovato il sangue delle persone de’ poveri innocenti, i quali tu non avevi colti sconficcando; anzi li hai uccisi per tutte queste cose.
35 you say, 'I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.' Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying, 'I have not sinned.'	35 E pur tu dici: Certo, io sono innocente; l’ira sua si è pure stornata da me. Ecco, io contenderò teco per ciò che tu hai detto: Io non ho peccato.
36 How lightly you gad about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.	36 Perchè trascorri cotanto or qua, or là, mutando il tuo cammino? tu sarai confusa di Egitto, come sei stata confusa di Assur.
37 From it too you will come away with your hands upon your head, for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.	37 Eziandio d’appresso a costui uscirai con le mani in sul capo; perciocchè il Signore riprova le tue confidanze, e tu non prospererai in esse
