Jeremiah 2

1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying,	1 Mi fu rivolta questa parola del Signore:
2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the LORD, I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.	2 "Va' e grida agli orecchi di Gerusalamme: Così dice il Signore: Mi ricordo di te, dell'affetto della tua giovinezza. dell'amore al tempo del tuo fidanzamento, quando mi seguivi nel deserto, in una terra non seminata.
3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the first fruits of his harvest. All who ate of it became guilty; evil came upon them, says the LORD."	3 Israele era cosa sacra al Signore, la primizia del suo raccolto; quanti ne mangiavano dovevano pagarla, la sventura si abbatteva su di loro. Oracolo del Signore.
4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.	4 Udite la parola del Signore, casa di Giacobbe, voi, famiglie tutte della casa di Israele!
5 Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?	5 Così dice il Signore: Quale ingiustizia trovano in me i vostri padri, per allontanarsi da me? Essi seguirono ciò ch'è vano, diventarono loro stessi vanità
6 They did not say, 'Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?'	6 e non si domandarono: Dov'è il Signore che ci fece uscire dal paese d'Egitto, ci guidò nel deserto, per una terra di steppe e di frane, per una terra arida e tenebrosa, per una terra che nessuno attraversava e dove nessuno dimora?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.	7 Io vi ho condotti in una terra da giardino, perché ne mangiaste i frutti e i prodotti. Ma voi, appena entrati, avete contaminato la mia terra e avete reso il mio possesso un abominio.
8 The priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.	8 Neppure i sacerdoti si domandarono: Dov'è il Signore? I detentori della legge non mi hanno conosciuto, i pastori mi si sono ribellati, i profeti hanno predetto nel nome di Baal e hanno seguito esseri inutili.
9 "Therefore I still contend with you, says the LORD, and with your children's children I will contend.	9 Per questo intenterò ancora un processo contro di voi, - oracolo del Signore - e farò causa ai vostri nipoti.
10 For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing.	10 Recatevi nelle isole dei Kittim e osservate, mandate pure a Kedar e considerate bene; vedete se là è mai accaduta una cosa simile.
11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.	11 Ha mai un popolo cambiato dèi? Eppure quelli non sono dèi! Ma il mio popolo ha cambiato colui che è la sua gloria con un essere inutile e vano.
12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the LORD,	12 Stupitene, o cieli; inorridite come non mai. Oracolo del Signore.
13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.	13 Perché il mio popolo ha commesso due iniquità: essi hanno abbandonato me, sorgente di acqua viva, per scavarsi cisterne, cisterne screpolate, che non tengono l'acqua.
14 "Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey?	14 Israele è forse uno schiavo o un servo nato in casa? Perché allora è diventato una preda?
15 The lions have roared against him, they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.	15 Contro di lui ruggiscono i leoni, fanno udire i loro urli. La sua terra è ridotta a deserto, le sue città sono state bruciate e nessuno vi abita.
16 Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head.	16 Perfino i figli di Menfi e di Tafni ti hanno raso la testa.
17 Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the LORD your God, when he led you in the way?	17 Tutto ciò forse non ti accade perché hai abbandonato il Signore tuo Dio?
18 And now what do you gain by going to Egypt, to drink the waters of the Nile? Or what do you gain by going to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?	18 E ora perché corri verso l'Egitto a bere le acque del Nilo? Perché corri verso l'Assiria a bere le acque dell'Eufrate?
19 Your wickedness will chasten you, and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the LORD your God; the fear of me is not in you, says the Lord GOD of hosts.	19 La tua stessa malvagità ti castiga e le tue ribellioni ti puniscono. Riconosci e vedi quanto è cosa cattiva a amara l'aver abbandonato il Signore tuo Dio e il non aver più timore di me. Oracolo del Signore degli eserciti.
20 "For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, 'I will not serve.' Yea, upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down as a harlot.	20 Poiché già da tempo hai infranto il tuo giogo, hai spezzato i tuoi legami e hai detto: Non ti servirò! Infatti sopra ogni colle elevato e sotto ogni albero verde ti sei prostituita.
21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?	21 Io ti avevo piantato come vigna scelta, tutta di vitigni genuini; in tralci degeneri di vigna bastarda?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, says the Lord GOD.	22 Anche se ti lavassi con la soda e usassi molta potassa, davanti a me resterebbe la macchia della tua iniquità. Oracolo del Signore.
23 How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done--a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,	23 Perché osi dire: Non mi sono contaminata, non ho seguito i Baal? Considera i tuoi passi là nella valle, riconosci quello che hai fatto, giovane cammella leggera e vagabonda,
24 a wild ass used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her.	24 asina selvatica abituata al deserto: nell'ardore del suo desiderio aspira l'aria; chi può frenare la sua brama? Quanti la cercano non devono stancarsi: la troveranno sempre nel suo mese.
25 Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.'	25 Bada che il tuo piede non resti scalzo e che la tua gola non si inaridisca! Ma tu rispondi: No. È inutile, perché io amo gli stranieri, voglio seguirli.
26 "As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,	26 Come si vergogna un ladro preso in flagrante così restano svergognati quelli della casa d'Israele, essi, i loro re, i loro capi, i loro sacerdoti e i loro profeti.
27 who say to a tree, 'You are my father,' and to a stone, 'You gave me birth.' For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say, 'Arise and save us!'	27 Dicono a un pezzo di legno: Tu sei mio padre, e a una pietra: Tu mi hai generato. A me essi voltan le spalle e non la fronte; ma al tempo della sventura invocano: Alzati, salvaci!
28 But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you, in your time of trouble; for as many as your cities are your gods, O Judah.	28 E dove sono gli dèi che ti sei costruiti? Si alzino, se posson salvarti nel tempo della tua sventura; poiché numerosi come le tue città sono, o Giuda, i tuoi dèi!
29 "Why do you complain against me? You have all rebelled against me, says the LORD.	29 Perché vi lamentate con me? Tutti voi mi siete stati infedeli. Oracolo del Signore.
30 In vain have I smitten your children, they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.	30 Invano ho colpito i vostri figli, voi non avete imparato la lezione. La vostra stessa spada ha divorato i vostri profeti come un leone distruttore.
31 And you, O generation, heed the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, 'We are free, we will come no more to thee?	31 O generazione! Proprio voi badate alla parola del Signore! Sono forse divenuto un deserto per Israele o una terra di tenebre densissime? Perché il mio popolo dice: Ci siamo emancipati, più non faremo ritorno a te?
32 Can a maiden forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.	32 Si dimentica forse una vergine dei suoi ornamenti, una sposa della sua cintura? Eppure il mio popolo mi ha dimenticato per giorni innumerevoli.
33 "How well you direct your course to seek lovers! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.	33 Come sai ben scegliere la tua via in cerca di amore! Per questo hai insegnato i tuoi costumi anche alle donne peggiori.
34 Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these things	34 Perfino sugli orli delle tue vesti si trova il sangue di poveri innocenti, da te non sorpresi nell'atto di scassinare, ma presso ogni quercia.
35 you say, 'I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.' Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying, 'I have not sinned.'	35 Eppure protesti: Io sono innocente, la sua ira è già lontana da me. Eccomi pronto a entrare in giudizio con te, perché hai detto: Non ho peccato!
36 How lightly you gad about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.	36 Perché ti sei ridotta così vile nel cambiare la strada? Anche dall'Egitto sarai delusa come fosti delusa dall'Assiria.
37 From it too you will come away with your hands upon your head, for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.	37 Anche di là tornerai con le mani sul capo, perché il Signore ha rigettato coloro nei quali confidavi; da loro non avrai alcun vantaggio.
