Sirach 6

1 for a bad name incurs shame and reproach: so fares the double-tongued sinner.	1 Non diventare, invece di amico, nemico del prossimo; perchè il malvagio raccatta ignominia e obbrobrio, e [così] il peccatore invidioso e bilingue.
2 Do not exalt yourself through your soul's counsel, lest your soul be torn in pieces like a bull.	2 Non ti esaltare, ne' disegni dell'anima tua come un toro; perchè non sia infranta la tua forza dalla stoltezza,
3 You will devour your leaves and destroy your fruit, and will be left like a withered tree.	3 e questa divori le tue foglie e distrugga i tuoi frutti, e tu rimanga come arido sterpo nel deserto.
4 An evil soul will destroy him who has it, and make him the laughingstock of his enemies.	4 L'anima malvagia rovina chi la possiede, e lo rende ludibrio de' suoi nemici, e lo ridurrà alla sorte degli empi.
5 A pleasant voice multiplies friends, and a gracious tongue multiplies courtesies.	5 La parola soave moltiplica gli amici e placa i nemici, e la lingua amabile abbonda nell'uomo dabbene.
6 Let those that are at peace with you be many, but let your advisers be one in a thousand.	6 Molti siano che vivono in pace con te, ma uno tra mille il consigliere.
7 When you gain a friend, gain him through testing, and do not trust him hastily.	7 Se ti procacci un amico, procacciatelo mettendolo alla prova, e non esser precipitoso a fidarti di lui.
8 For there is a friend who is such at his own convenience, but will not stand by you in your day of trouble.	8 Perchè c'è chi è amico quando gli conviene, ma non rimane nel dì della tribolazione.
9 And there is a friend who changes into an enemy, and will disclose a quarrel to your disgrace.	9 E c'è l'amico che si muta in nemico, e l'amico che metterà a nudo l'odio, la contesa e gli oltraggi.
10 And there is a friend who is a table companion, but will not stand by you in your day of trouble.	10 E c'è chi è amico [finché è] compagno di tavola, e non rimarrà nel giorno della necessità.
11 In prosperity he will make himself your equal, and be bold with your servants;	11 Se l'amico rimarrà costante, sarà come un tuo uguale, e confidenzialmente agirà tra quei di casa tua.
12 but if you are brought low he will turn against you, and will hide himself from your presence.	12 Se si umilierà dinanzi a te e si nasconderà al tuo cospetto, avrai un'amicizia buona e concorde.
13 Keep yourself far from your enemies, and be on guard toward your friends.	13 Tienti lontano da 'tuoi nemici, e sta' in guardia circa i tuoi amici.
14 A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter: he that has found one has found a treasure.	14 Un amico fedele è protezione potente; chi l'ha trovato ha trovato un tesoro.
15 There is nothing so precious as a faithful friend, and no scales can measure his excellence.	15 A un amico fedele non c'è nulla che possa compararsi, e non c'è peso d'oro e d'argento che valga l'eccellenza della sua fedeltà.
16 A faithful friend is an elixir of life; and those who fear the Lord will find him.	16 Un amico fedele è farmaco di vita e d'immortalità, e quei che temono il Signore, lo troveranno.
17 Whoever fears the Lord directs his friendship aright, for as he is, so is his neighbor also.	17 Chi teme il Signore, si procaccia una buona amicizia, perchè il suo amico sarà come lui.
18 My son, from your youth up choose instruction, and until you are old you will keep finding wisdom.	18 Figliuolo, fin dalla tua gioventù, accogli l'istruzione, e sino alla canizie acquisterai sapienza.
19 Come to her like one who plows and sows, and wait for her good harvest. For in her service you will toil a little while, and soon you will eat of her produce.	19 Come uno che ara e semina accostati ad essa, e aspettane i buoni frutti.
20 She seems very harsh to the uninstructed; a weakling will not remain with her.	20 Perchè poco tempo dovrai affaticarti nel coltivarla, e presto ti ciberai de' suoi prodotti,
21 She will weigh him down like a heavy testing stone, and he will not be slow to cast her off.	21 Quanto mai aspra appare la sapienza agli ignoranti! lo stolto non la dura con lei.
22 For wisdom is like her name, and is not manifest to many.	22 Come gravosa pietra sarà per essi la prova, e non tarderanno a gettarla via.
23 Listen, my son, and accept my judgment; do not reject my counsel.	23 La dotta sapienza invero risponde al suo nome, e non a molti si manifesta; ma con quei che la conoscono rimane sino al cospetto di Dio»
24 Put your feet into her fetters, and your neck into her collar.	24 Ascolta, figliuolo, e accetta un saggio parere, e non rigettare il mio consiglio.
25 Put your shoulder under her and carry her, and do not fret under her bonds.	25 Metti i tuoi piedi ne' ceppi di lei e nel suo collare il tuo collo.
26 Come to her with all your soul, and keep her ways with all your might.	26 Curva le tue spalle a portarla, e non t'irritare delle sue catene.
27 Search out and seek, and she will become known to you; and when you get hold of her, do not let her go.	27 Con tutto l'animo tuo accostati a lei, e con ogni tuo potere custodisci le sue vie.
28 For at last you will find the rest she gives, and she will be changed into joy for you.	28 Ricercala e ti si farà conoscere, e venutone in possesso, non la lasciare.
29 Then her fetters will become for you a strong protection, and her collar a glorious robe.	29 Perchè alla fine troverai riposo in lei, e si cambierà per te in allegrezza.
30 Her yoke is a golden ornament, and her bonds are a cord of blue.	30 E ti saranno i suoi ceppi forte difesa e valido sostegno, e il suo collare un vestimento di gloria.
31 You will wear her like a glorious robe, and put her on like a crown of gladness.	31 Decoro di vita è in lei, e le sue catene son fasce salutari.
32 If you are willing, my son, you will be taught, and if you apply yourself you will become clever.	32 Come veste di gloria l'indosserai, e come corona d'esultanza l'imporrai sul tuo capo.
33 If you love to listen you will gain knowledge, and if you incline your ear you will become wise.	33 Se mi darai retta, figliuolo, t'istruirai, e se applicherai l'animo tuo, diverrai scaltro.
34 Stand in the assembly of the elders. Who is wise? Cleave to him.	34 Se porgerai l'orecchio, acquisterai il sapere, e se amerai ascoltare, sarai sapiente.
35 Be ready to listen to every narrative, and do not let wise proverbs escape you.	35 Sta' nella compagnia de' vegliardi prudenti, e unisciti di cuore alla loro sapienza; perchè tu possa ascoltare ogni ragionamento su Dio e le lodate massime non ti sfuggano.
36 If you see an intelligent man, visit him early; let your foot wear out his doorstep.	36 Se vedi un uomo sensato, vanne in cerca di buon mattino, e i gradini della sua porta consumi il tuo piede.
37 Reflect on the statutes of the Lord, and meditate at all times on his commandments. It is he who will give insight to your mind, and your desire for wisdom will be granted.	37 Ferma il tuo pensiero sui comandamenti del Signore, e sui suoi precetti medita del continuo. Egli ti darà un cuore [forte], e la bramata sapienza ti sarà concessa.
