Sirach 6

1 for a bad name incurs shame and reproach: so fares the double-tongued sinner.	1 e da amico non diventare nemico. La cattiva fama attira a sé vergogna e disprezzo: così accade al peccatore che è bugiardo.
2 Do not exalt yourself through your soul's counsel, lest your soul be torn in pieces like a bull.	2 Non ti abbandonare alla tua passione, perché il tuo vigore non venga abbattuto come un toro;
3 You will devour your leaves and destroy your fruit, and will be left like a withered tree.	3 divorerà le tue foglie e tu perderai i tuoi frutti, e ti ridurrà come un legno secco.
4 An evil soul will destroy him who has it, and make him the laughingstock of his enemies.	4 Una passione malvagia rovina chi la possiede e lo fa oggetto di scherno per i nemici.
5 A pleasant voice multiplies friends, and a gracious tongue multiplies courtesies.	5 Una bocca amabile moltiplica gli amici, una lingua affabile le buone relazioni.
6 Let those that are at peace with you be many, but let your advisers be one in a thousand.	6 Siano molti quelli che vivono in pace con te, ma tuo consigliere uno su mille.
7 When you gain a friend, gain him through testing, and do not trust him hastily.	7 Se vuoi farti un amico, mettilo alla prova e non fidarti subito di lui.
8 For there is a friend who is such at his own convenience, but will not stand by you in your day of trouble.	8 C’è infatti chi è amico quando gli fa comodo, ma non resiste nel giorno della tua sventura.
9 And there is a friend who changes into an enemy, and will disclose a quarrel to your disgrace.	9 C’è anche l’amico che si cambia in nemico e scoprirà i vostri litigi a tuo disonore.
10 And there is a friend who is a table companion, but will not stand by you in your day of trouble.	10 C’è l’amico compagno di tavola, ma non resiste nel giorno della tua sventura.
11 In prosperity he will make himself your equal, and be bold with your servants;	11 Nella tua fortuna sarà un altro te stesso e parlerà liberamente con i tuoi servi.
12 but if you are brought low he will turn against you, and will hide himself from your presence.	12 Ma se sarai umiliato, si ergerà contro di te e si nasconderà dalla tua presenza.
13 Keep yourself far from your enemies, and be on guard toward your friends.	13 Tieniti lontano dai tuoi nemici e guàrdati anche dai tuoi amici.
14 A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter: he that has found one has found a treasure.	14 Un amico fedele è rifugio sicuro: chi lo trova, trova un tesoro.
15 There is nothing so precious as a faithful friend, and no scales can measure his excellence.	15 Per un amico fedele non c’è prezzo, non c’è misura per il suo valore.
16 A faithful friend is an elixir of life; and those who fear the Lord will find him.	16 Un amico fedele è medicina che dà vita: lo troveranno quelli che temono il Signore.
17 Whoever fears the Lord directs his friendship aright, for as he is, so is his neighbor also.	17 Chi teme il Signore sa scegliere gli amici: come è lui, tali saranno i suoi amici.
18 My son, from your youth up choose instruction, and until you are old you will keep finding wisdom.	18 Figlio, sin dalla giovinezza ricerca l’istruzione e fino alla vecchiaia troverai la sapienza.
19 Come to her like one who plows and sows, and wait for her good harvest. For in her service you will toil a little while, and soon you will eat of her produce.	19 Accòstati ad essa come uno che ara e che semina, e resta in attesa dei suoi buoni frutti; faticherai un po’ per coltivarla, ma presto mangerai dei suoi prodotti.
20 She seems very harsh to the uninstructed; a weakling will not remain with her.	20 Quanto è difficile per lo stolto la sapienza! L’insensato non vi si applica;
21 She will weigh him down like a heavy testing stone, and he will not be slow to cast her off.	21 per lui peserà come una pietra di prova e non tarderà a gettarla via.
22 For wisdom is like her name, and is not manifest to many.	22 La sapienza infatti è come dice il suo nome e non si manifesta a molti.
23 Listen, my son, and accept my judgment; do not reject my counsel.	23 Ascolta, figlio, e accetta il mio pensiero, e non rifiutare il mio consiglio.
24 Put your feet into her fetters, and your neck into her collar.	24 Introduci i tuoi piedi nei suoi ceppi, il tuo collo nella sua catena.
25 Put your shoulder under her and carry her, and do not fret under her bonds.	25 Piega la tua spalla e portala, non infastidirti dei suoi legami.
26 Come to her with all your soul, and keep her ways with all your might.	26 Avvicìnati ad essa con tutta l’anima e con tutta la tua forza osserva le sue vie.
27 Search out and seek, and she will become known to you; and when you get hold of her, do not let her go.	27 Segui le sue orme, ricercala e ti si manifesterà, e quando l’hai raggiunta, non lasciarla.
28 For at last you will find the rest she gives, and she will be changed into joy for you.	28 Alla fine in essa troverai riposo ed essa si cambierà per te in gioia.
29 Then her fetters will become for you a strong protection, and her collar a glorious robe.	29 I suoi ceppi saranno per te una protezione potente e le sue catene una veste di gloria.
30 Her yoke is a golden ornament, and her bonds are a cord of blue.	30 Un ornamento d’oro ha su di sé e i suoi legami sono fili di porpora.
31 You will wear her like a glorious robe, and put her on like a crown of gladness.	31 Te ne rivestirai come di una splendida veste, te ne cingerai come di una corona magnifica.
32 If you are willing, my son, you will be taught, and if you apply yourself you will become clever.	32 Figlio, se lo vuoi, diventerai saggio, se ci metti l’anima, sarai esperto in tutto.
33 If you love to listen you will gain knowledge, and if you incline your ear you will become wise.	33 Se ti è caro ascoltare, imparerai, se porgerai l’orecchio, sarai saggio.
34 Stand in the assembly of the elders. Who is wise? Cleave to him.	34 Frequenta le riunioni degli anziani, e se qualcuno è saggio, unisciti a lui.
35 Be ready to listen to every narrative, and do not let wise proverbs escape you.	35 Ascolta volentieri ogni discorso su Dio e le massime sagge non ti sfuggano.
36 If you see an intelligent man, visit him early; let your foot wear out his doorstep.	36 Se vedi una persona saggia, va’ di buon mattino da lei, il tuo piede logori i gradini della sua porta.
37 Reflect on the statutes of the Lord, and meditate at all times on his commandments. It is he who will give insight to your mind, and your desire for wisdom will be granted.	37 Rifletti sui precetti del Signore, medita sempre sui suoi comandamenti; egli renderà saldo il tuo cuore, e la sapienza che desideri ti sarà data.
