Sirach 5

1 Do not set your heart on your wealth, nor say, "I have enough."	1 Verlaß dich nicht auf deinen Reichtum und sage nicht: »Ich habe genug.«
2 Do not follow your inclination and strength, walking according to the desires of your heart.	2 Folge nicht deinen Gelüsten und deiner Kraft, daß du nach den Begierden deines Herzens wandelst,
3 Do not say, "Who will have power over me?" for the Lord will surely punish you.	3 und sage nicht: »Wer hat mir zu befehlen?«; denn der Herr, der Recht übt, wird dich büßen lassen (h).
4 Do not say, "I sinned, and what happened to me?" for the Lord is slow to anger.	4 Sage nicht: »Ich habe gesündigt, und was hat’s mir geschadet?« denn der Herr ist langmütig.
5 Do not be so confident of atonement that you add sin to sin.	5 In bezug auf Sühne (= Vergebung) sei nicht ohne Bangen, so daß du Sünde auf Sünden häufst.
6 Do not say, "His mercy is great, he will forgive the multitude of my sins," for both mercy and wrath are with him, and his anger rests on sinners.	6 Und sage nicht: »Sein Erbarmen ist groß, er wird mir schon meine vielen Sünden vergeben«; denn bei ihm ist wohl Erbarmen, aber auch Zorn, und auf den Sündern lastet sein Grimm.
7 Do not delay to turn to the Lord, nor postpone it from day to day; for suddenly the wrath of the Lord will go forth, and at the time of punishment you will perish.	7 Säume nicht, dich zum Herrn zu bekehren, und verschieb es nicht von einem Tag zum andern; den plötzlich kommt der Zorn des Herrn zum Ausbruch, und am Tage der Vergeltung würdest du umkommen.
8 Do not depend on dishonest wealth, for it will not benefit you in the day of calamity.	8 Verlaß dich nicht auf unrechtes Gut, denn am Tage der Heimsuchung (= des Zorns) wird es dir nichts nützen. –
9 Do not winnow with every wind, nor follow every path: the double-tongued sinner does that.	9 Worfle nicht bei jedem Winde, und gehe nicht auf jeglichem Pfade! (So macht es der doppelzüngige Sünder.)
10 Be steadfast in your understanding, and let your speech be consistent.	10 Bleibe fest bei deiner Überzeugung und laß deine Rede immer eine und dieselbe sein.
11 Be quick to hear, and be deliberate in answering.	11 Sei schnell bereit zum Hören, aber langsam laß die Antwort hören.
12 If you have understanding, answer your neighbor; but if not, put your hand on your mouth.	12 Hast du Einsicht, so antworte dem andern; wo nicht, so laß deine Hand auf deinem Munde liegen.
13 Glory and dishonor come from speaking, and a man's tongue is his downfall.	13 Ehre und Schande liegen in der Rede und des Menschen Zunge kann ihn zu Fall bringen.
14 Do not be called a slanderer, and do not lie in ambush with your tongue; for shame comes to the thief, and severe condemnation to the double-tongued.	14 Laß dich nicht doppelzüngig (oder einen Ohrenbläser?) nennen und gebrauche deine Zunge nicht zur Hinterlist (= Verleumdung); denn dem Diebe wird Schande zuteil und böser Schimpf dem Doppelzüngigen.
15 In great and small matters do not act amiss, and do not become an enemy instead of a friend.	15 Verfehle dich nicht, weder im Großen noch im Kleinen, und statt eines Freundes beweise dich nicht als Feind;
	16 denn einen üblen Namen, Schimpf und Schande würdest du davontragen; so gebührt es dem doppelzüngigen Sünder.
