But the ungodly were assailed to the end by pitiless anger, for God knew in advance even their future actions,1 Ma sugli empi piombò, a fondo, un’ira senza pietà; Dio, infatti, prevedeva anche come stavano per comportarsi,
that, though they themselves had permitted thy people to depart and hastily sent them forth, they would change their minds and pursue them.2 come essi, che avevano spinto quelli a partire e li avevano mandati via in fretta, li avrebbero inseguiti perché avevano cambiato idea.
For while they were still busy at mourning, and were lamenting at the graves of their dead, they reached another foolish decision, and pursued as fugitives those whom they had begged and compelled to depart.3 Così, mentre ancora erano intenti al lutto e piangevano le tombe dei morti, si appigliarono a un altro stolto partito. Inseguivano, così, come fuggitivi coloro che essi avevano estromesso con suppliche!
For the fate they deserved drew them on to this end, and made them forget what had happened, in order that they might fill up the punishment which their torments still lacked,4 Ora, una sorte meritata, li trasse a questo estremo e fece loro perdere il ricordo delle cose accadute, affinché scontassero il castigo mancato ai tormenti;
and that thy people might experience an incredible journey, but they themselves might meet a strange death.5 e, mentre il tuo popolo compiva un impensato cammino, essi andavano incontro a una morte inaudita.
For the whole creation in its nature was fashioned anew, complying with thy commands, that thy children might be kept unharmed.6 Tutto il creato fu modellato di nuovo nella sua propria natura, pieghevole ai tuoi particolari comandi, perché i tuoi figli venissero custoditi illesi.
The cloud was seen overshadowing the camp, and dry land emerging where water had stood before, an unhindered way out of the Red Sea, and a grassy plain out of the raging waves,7 La nuvola copriva con l’ombra l’accampamento; dove era prima l’acqua si vide emergere terra asciutta e una via non impedita nel Mare Rosso e una pianura erbosa da una furia di flutti,
where those protected by thy hand passed through as one nation, after gazing on marvelous wonders.8 per cui coloro che erano protetti dalla tua mano passarono con tutto il popolo e furono spettatori di meravigliosi prodigi.
For they ranged like horses, and leaped like lambs, praising thee, O Lord, who didst deliver them.9 Furono nutriti, infatti, come puledri e saltellarono come agnelli magnificando te, o Signore, che li salvavi.
For they still recalled the events of their sojourn, how instead of producing animals the earth brought forth gnats, and instead of fish the river spewed out vast numbers of frogs.10 Ricordavano, infatti, ancora le cose accadute in terra straniera: come, invece di generare animali, la terra dava mosche e come il fiume riversava abbondanza di rane invece di pesci.
Afterward they saw also a new kind of birds, when desire led them to ask for luxurious food;11 In seguito videro pure una nuova produzione di uccelli, quando essi, spinti dal desiderio, ricercarono cibi prelibati:
for, to give them relief, quails came up from the sea.12 così dal mare, ad ammonirli, risalirono le quaglie,
The punishments did not come upon the sinners without prior signs in the violence of thunder, for they justly suffered because of their wicked acts; for they practiced a more bitter hatred of strangers.13 ma sui peccatori piombò il castigo, non senza segni che erano avvenuti con violenza di folgori. Meritamente soffrivano per le loro cattiverie, usi a odio ben feroce verso lo straniero.
Others had refused to receive strangers when they came to them, but these made slaves of guests who were their benefactors.14 Altri certo non ricevettero gli sconosciuti all’arrivo. Ma questi ridussero in schiavitù ospiti benefici.
And not only so, but punishment of some sort will come upon the former for their hostile reception of the aliens;15 E non basta. Per quelli vi sarà qualche indulgenza, poiché ricevevano i forestieri solo con maniere ostili;
but the latter, after receiving them with festal celebrations, afflicted with terrible sufferings those who had already shared the same rights.16 questi, invece, dopo di averli ricevuti con letizia, sebbene già fatti partecipi di eguali diritti, li afflissero con fatiche gravose.
They were stricken also with loss of sight-- just as were those at the door of the righteous man-- when, surrounded by yawning darkness, each tried to find the way through his own door.17 E, come quelli che furono colpiti anche da cecità sulla soglia del giusto, circondati da nera caligine, ognuno andava cercando l’ingresso delle proprie porte.
For the elements changed places with one another, as on a harp the notes vary the nature of the rhythm, while each note remains the same. This may be clearly inferred from the sight of what took place.18 Ora gli elementi sono disposti in vario modo tra di loro, come le note dell’arpa, che cambiano il nome al ritmo, mentre ne conservano il tono; ciò che chiaramente si constata da uno sguardo ai fatti.
For land animals were transformed into water creatures, and creatures that swim moved over to the land.19 Così gli animali terrestri diventavano acquatici e quelli che nuotavano passavano sulla terra;
Fire even in water retained its normal power, and water forgot its fire-quenching nature.20 il fuoco superava, nelle acque, la propria forza e l’acqua dimenticava il potere di estinguere;
Flames, on the contrary, failed to consume the flesh of perishable creatures that walked among them, nor did they melt the crystalline, easily melted kind of heavenly food.21 le fiamme, al contrario, degli animali soggetti a consumazione, non consumavano le carni, sebbene vi camminassero sopra, né scioglievano quella specie di cibo celeste che, simile alla brina, facilmente si liquefaceva.
For in everything, O Lord, thou hast exalted and glorified thy people; and thou hast not neglected to help them at all times and in all places.22 In tutto, o Signore, hai reso grande il tuo popolo, e onorato né hai trascurato di assisterlo sempre e dovunque.
