1 O LORD, thou God of vengeance, thou God of vengeance, shine forth!	1 Du Gott der Rache, o HERR,du Gott der Rache, erscheine!
2 Rise up, O judge of the earth; render to the proud their deserts!	2 Erhebe dich, Richter der Erde,vergilt den Stolzen nach ihrem Tun!
3 O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?	3 Wie lange noch sollen die Gottlosen, HERR,wie lange noch sollen die Gottlosen jubeln,
4 They pour out their arrogant words, they boast, all the evildoers.	4 sollen sie geifern und trotzige Reden führen,alle Übeltäter stolz sich brüsten?
5 They crush thy people, O LORD, and afflict thy heritage.	5 Dein Volk, o HERR, zertreten sieund bedrücken dein Erbe (= Eigentumsvolk);
6 They slay the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless;	6 sie erwürgen Witwe und Fremdlingund morden die Waisen
7 and they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive."	7 und sagen (oder: denken) dabei: »Nicht sieht es der HERR«oder: »Nicht merkt es der Gott Jakobs.«
8 Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise?	8 Nehmt Verstand an, ihr Unvernünftigen im Volk,und ihr Toren: wann wollt ihr Einsicht gewinnen?
9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?	9 Der das Ohr gepflanzt, der sollte nicht hören?Der das Auge gebildet, der sollte nicht sehn?
10 He who chastens the nations, does he not chastise? He who teaches men knowledge,	10 Der die Völker erzieht, der sollte nicht strafen,er, der die Menschen Erkenntnis lehrt?
11 the LORD, knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath.	11 Der HERR kennt wohl die Gedanken der Menschen,daß nur ein Hauch (= Nichts) sie sind.
12 Blessed is the man whom thou dost chasten, O LORD, and whom thou dost teach out of thy law	12 Wohl dem Manne, den du, HERR, in Zucht nimmst,und den du aus deinem Gesetz belehrst,
13 to give him respite from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.	13 damit er sich Ruhe verschaffe vor Unglückstagen,bis (oder: während) dem Frevler die Grube man gräbt!
14 For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage;	14 Denn der HERR wird sein Volk nicht verstoßenund sein Erbe (V.5) nicht verlassen;
15 for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it.	15 denn Recht muß doch Recht bleiben,und ihm werden alle redlich Gesinnten sich anschließen.
16 Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers?	16 Wer leistet mir Beistand gegen die Bösen?Wer tritt für mich ein gegen die Übeltäter?
17 If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in the land of silence.	17 Wäre der HERR nicht mein Helfer gewesen,so wohnte meine Seele wohl schon im stillen Land.
18 When I thought, "My foot slips," thy steadfast love, O LORD, held me up.	18 Sooft ich dachte: »Mein Fuß will wanken«,hat deine Gnade, HERR, mich immer gestützt;
19 When the cares of my heart are many, thy consolations cheer my soul.	19 bei der Menge meiner Sorgen in meiner Brusthaben deine Tröstungen mir das Herz erquickt.
20 Can wicked rulers be allied with thee, who frame mischief by statute?	20 Sollte verbündet dir sein der Richterstuhl des Unheils,der Verderben schafft durch Gesetzesverdrehung?
21 They band together against the life of the righteous, and condemn the innocent to death.	21 Sie tun sich ja zusammen gegen das Leben des Gerechtenund verurteilen unschuldig Blut.
22 But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge.	22 Doch der HERR ist mir zur festen Burg geworden,mein Gott zu meinem Zufluchtsfelsen;
23 He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out.	23 er läßt ihren Frevel auf sie selber fallenund wird sie ob ihrer Bosheit vertilgen:ja vertilgen wird sie der HERR, unser Gott.
