1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:	1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 "If one ventures a word with you, will you be offended? Yet who can keep from speaking?	2 Se arriscarmos uma palavra, talvez ficarás aflito, mas quem poderá impedir-me de falar?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands.	3 Eis: exortaste muita gente, deste força a mãos débeis,
4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees.	4 tuas palavras levantavam aqueles que caíam, fortificaste os joelhos vacilantes.
5 But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed.	5 Agora que é a tua vez, enfraqueces; quando és atingido, te perturbas.
6 Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?	6 Não é tua piedade a tua esperança, e a integridade de tua vida, a tua segurança?
7 "Think now, who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off?	7 Lembra-te: qual o inocente que pereceu? Ou quando foram destruídos os justos?
8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.	8 Tanto quanto eu saiba, os que praticam a iniqüidades e os que semeiam sofrimento, também os colhem.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.	9 Ao sopro de Deus eles perecem, e são aniquilados pelo vento de seu furor.
10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.	10 Urra o leão, e seu rugido é abafado; os dentes dos leõezinhos são quebrados.
11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.	11 A fera morreu porque não tinha presa, e os filhotes da leoa são dispersados.
12 "Now a word was brought to me stealthily, my ear received the whisper of it.	12 Uma palavra chegou a mim furtivamente, meu ouvido percebeu o murmúrio,
13 Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 na confusão das visões da noite, na hora em que o sono se apodera dos humanos.
14 dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.	14 Assaltaram-me o medo e o terror, e sacudiram todos os meus ossos;
15 A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 um sopro perpassou pelo meu rosto, e fez arrepiar o pêlo de minha pele.
16 It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice:	16 Lá estava um ser - não lhe vi o rosto - como um espectro sob meus olhos.
17 'Can mortal man be righteous before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker?	17 Ouvi uma débil voz: Pode um homem ser justo na presença de Deus, pode um mortal ser puro diante de seu Criador?
18 Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error;	18 Ele não confia nem em seus próprios servos; até mesmo em seus anjos encontra defeitos,
19 how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth.	19 quanto mais em seus hóspedes das casas de argila que têm o pó por fundamento! São esmagados como uma traça;
20 Between morning and evening they are destroyed; they perish for ever without any regarding it.	20 entre a noite e a manhã são aniquilados; sem que neles se preste atenção, morrem para sempre.
21 If their tent-cord is plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?'	21 Não foi arrancada a estaca da tenda deles? Morrem por não terem conhecido a sabedoria.
