1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:	1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:
2 "If one ventures a word with you, will you be offended? Yet who can keep from speaking?	2 «Se uno tenta di parlare, ti sarà gravoso? Ma chi può trattenere le parole?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands.	3 Ecco, sei stato maestro di molti e a mani stanche hai ridato vigore;
4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees.	4 le tue parole hanno sorretto chi vacillava e le ginocchia che si piegavano hai rafforzato.
5 But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed.	5 Ma ora che questo accade a te, ti è gravoso; capita a te e ne sei sconvolto.
6 Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?	6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia, e la tua condotta integra la tua speranza?
7 "Think now, who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off?	7 Ricordalo: quale innocente è mai perito e quando mai uomini retti furono distrutti?
8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.	8 Per quanto io ho visto, chi ara iniquità e semina affanni, li raccoglie.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.	9 A un soffio di Dio periscono e dallo sfogo della sua ira sono annientati.
10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.	10 Ruggisce il leone, urla la belva, e i denti dei leoncelli si frantumano;
11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.	11 il leone perisce per mancanza di preda, e i figli della leonessa si disperdono.
12 "Now a word was brought to me stealthily, my ear received the whisper of it.	12 A me fu recata, furtiva, una parola e il mio orecchio ne percepì il lieve sussurro.
13 Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 Negli incubi delle visioni notturne, quando il torpore grava sugli uomini,
14 dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.	14 terrore mi prese e spavento, che tutte le ossa mi fece tremare;
15 A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 un vento mi passò sulla faccia, sulla pelle mi si drizzarono i peli.
16 It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice:	16 Stava là uno, ma non ne riconobbi l'aspetto, una figura era davanti ai miei occhi. Poi udii una voce sommessa:
17 'Can mortal man be righteous before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker?	17 “Può l’uomo essere più retto di Dio, o il mortale più puro del suo creatore?
18 Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error;	18 Ecco, dei suoi servi egli non si fida e nei suoi angeli trova difetti,
19 how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth.	19 quanto più in coloro che abitano case di fango, che nella polvere hanno il loro fondamento! Come tarlo sono schiacciati,
20 Between morning and evening they are destroyed; they perish for ever without any regarding it.	20 sono annientati fra il mattino e la sera, senza che nessuno ci badi, periscono per sempre.
21 If their tent-cord is plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?'	21 Non viene forse strappata la corda della loro tenda, sicché essi muoiono, ma senza sapienza?”.
