1 "Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.	1 « L'argento ha una fonte delle sue vene, l'oro ha un luogo dove vien fuso,
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the ore.	2 il ferro si cava dalla terra, e la pietra fusa dal calore dà il rame;
3 Men put an end to darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in gloom and deep darkness.	3 (l'uomo) fissa il tempo alle tenebre, da sè scruta il fine di tutte le cose, ed anche la pietra (nascosta) nella caligine e nell'ombra di morte.
4 They open shafts in a valley away from where men live; they are forgotten by travelers, they hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.	4 Un torrente separa dal popolo viaggiatore coloro che il piede dell'uomo povero ha dimenticati e che son fuori della via;
5 As for the earth, out of it comes bread; but underneath it is turned up as by fire.	5 una terra da cui veniva il pane nelle sue viscere è sconvolta dal fuoco;
6 Its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold.	6 nelle sue pietre v'è lo zaffiro, le sue zolle son d'oro.
7 "That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon's eye has not seen it.	7 L'aquila ne ignorò la via nè la vide l'occhio dell'avvoltoio.
8 The proud beasts have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it.	8 I figli dei mercanti non la calcarono e non vi passò mai la leonessa.
9 "Man puts his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns mountains by the roots.	9 (L'uomo) stese la mano contro la selce, rovesciò dalle radici le montagne.
10 He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing.	10 Scavò rivi nelle rocce, e col suo occhio scrutò quanto v'è di prezioso.
11 He binds up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hid he brings forth to light.	11 Scrutò pure le profondità dei fiumi, e ne trasse alla luce ciò che v'era nascosto.
12 "But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?	12 Ma dove si trova la sapienza? Dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?
13 Man does not know the way to it, and it is not found in the land of the living.	13 L'uomo non ne conosce il prezzo. Essa non si trova nella terra di coloro che vivono in delizie;
14 The deep says, 'It is not in me,' and the sea says, 'It is not with me.'	14 l'abisso dice: Non è in me; il mare dice: In me non si trova.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, and silver cannot be weighed as its price.	15 Non sarà barattata coll'oro più fino; non sarà comprata a peso d'argento;
16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.	16 non sarà messa a paragone colle colorite stoffe dell'india, nè colla pietra sardonica più pregiata, nè collo zaffiro.
17 Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.	17 A lei non sarà paragonato l'oro e il vetro, nè sarà commutata con vasi d'oro.
18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls.	18 Le cose più grandi e pregiate non saran neppur rammentate in paragone di essa, chè la sapienza viene da fonte occulta:
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.	19 non l'arriverà il topazio d'Etiopia, nè saranno paragonati a lei i colori più brillanti.
20 "Whence then comes wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?	20 Donde vien dunque la sapienza? E dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?
21 It is hid from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the air.	21 E' nascosta agli occhi di tutti i viventi, è ignota anche agli uccelli del cielo.
22 Abaddon and Death say, 'We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.'	22 La perdizione e la morte han detto: E' giunta ai nostri orecchi la sua fama.
23 "God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.	23 Dio ne conosce la via, Egli sa dove essa dimori;
24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.	24 perchè vede sino ai confini del mondo, e scorge tutte le cose che sono sotto i cieli.
25 When he gave to the wind its weight, and meted out the waters by measure;	25 Egli assegnò il peso ai venti e pesò con misura le acque.
26 when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;	26 Quando imponeva una legge alle piogge e una via alle sonanti procelle,
27 then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.	27 allora Egli la vide e la rivelò, la stabili e la conobbe a fondo;
28 And he said to man, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'"	28 poi disse all'uomo: Ecco: temere il Signore è la sapienza, e fuggire il male è l'intelligenza ».
