1 "Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.	1 Certo, vi sono miniere per l'argento, e per l'oro luoghi dove viene raffinato.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the ore.	2 Il ferro viene estratto dal suolo, e la pietra fusa libera il rame.
3 Men put an end to darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in gloom and deep darkness.	3 L'uomo pone un limite alle tenebre, e fruga fino all'estremo confine la pietra oscura e buia.
4 They open shafts in a valley away from where men live; they are forgotten by travelers, they hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.	4 Perfora gallerie inaccessibili, dimenticate dai pedoni; oscilla sospeso, lontano dall'uomo.
5 As for the earth, out of it comes bread; but underneath it is turned up as by fire.	5 La terra dalla quale si estrae il pane, è sconvolta di sotto, come dal fuoco.
6 Its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold.	6 Le sue pietre sono giacimenti di zaffiri e la sua sabbia contiene dell'oro.
7 "That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon's eye has not seen it.	7 L'avvoltoio ne ignora il sentiero e non lo scorge l'occhio del falco;
8 The proud beasts have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it.	8 non è stato battuto dalle bestie feroci, né attraversato dai leoni.
9 "Man puts his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns mountains by the roots.	9 L'uomo porta la mano contro il selce, sconvolgendo i monti dalla radice.
10 He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing.	10 Nelle rocce scava gallerie, portando il suo occhio su tutto ciò che è prezioso.
11 He binds up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hid he brings forth to light.	11 Scandaglia le sorgenti dei fiumi e porta alla luce ciò che è nascosto.
12 "But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?	12 Ma la sapienza da dove si estrae? Dov'è il giacimento della prudenza?
13 Man does not know the way to it, and it is not found in the land of the living.	13 L'uomo non ne conosce il prezzo e non si trova nella terra dei viventi.
14 The deep says, 'It is not in me,' and the sea says, 'It is not with me.'	14 L'oceano dice: "Non è con me", e il mare risponde: "Neppure presso di me".
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, and silver cannot be weighed as its price.	15 Non si scambia con l'oro migliore, né si pesa l'argento per comperarla.
16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.	16 Non si acquista con l'oro di Ofir, né con l'oro pregiato e con lo zaffiro.
17 Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.	17 Non la pareggia l'oro e il cristallo, né si scambia con vasi di oro puro.
18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls.	18 Coralli e perle non meritano menzione; il possesso della sapienza è migliore delle perle.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.	19 Non la eguaglia il topazio di Etiopia, non si può scambiare a peso con l'oro puro.
20 "Whence then comes wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?	20 Ma la sapienza donde viene? E dov'è il giacimento della prudenza?
21 It is hid from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the air.	21 Essa è nascosta agli occhi di ogni vivente, ed è occulta agli uccelli del cielo.
22 Abaddon and Death say, 'We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.'	22 L'abisso e la morte confessano: "Coi nostri orecchi ne udimmo la fama".
23 "God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.	23 Dio solo ne conosce la via ed egli solo sa dove si trovi.
24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.	24 Perché egli volge lo sguardo fino ai confini della terra, e vede tutto ciò che sta sotto il cielo.
25 When he gave to the wind its weight, and meted out the waters by measure;	25 Quando determinò il peso del vento e definì la misura delle acque,
26 when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;	26 quando impose una legge alla pioggia e una via al lampo dei tuoni,
27 then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.	27 allora la vide e la calcolò, la scrutò e la stabilì,
28 And he said to man, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'"	28 dicendo all'uomo: "Ecco, temere Dio, questo è sapienza; e schivare il male, questo è prudenza".
