1 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the LORD, but the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves."	1 Una donna delle mogli dei profeti si raccomandava ad Eliseo, dicendo: « Il tuo servo, mio marito, è morto, e tu sai se il tuo servo temeva il Signore; or ecco è venuto un creditore a prendere i miei due figli per farli suoi servi ».
2 And Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me; what have you in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house, except a jar of oil."	2 Eliseo le disse: « Che vuoi che ti faccia? Dimmi, che hai in casa tua? » Essa rispose: « Io tua serva, in casa mia non ho niente eccetto un po' d'olio per ungermi ».
3 Then he said, "Go outside, borrow vessels of all your neighbors, empty vessels and not too few.	3 Egli le disse: « Va a chieder in prestito dai tuoi vicini dei vasi vuoti, e non pochi;
4 Then go in, and shut the door upon yourself and your sons, and pour into all these vessels; and when one is full, set it aside."	4 poi, rientrata che sarai, chiudi la tua porta, e, stando dentro con i tuoi figli, versa quell'olio in tutti quei vasi, e quelli pieni mettili da parte ».
5 So she went from him and shut the door upon herself and her sons; and as she poured they brought the vessels to her.	5 La donna se ne andò, e chiuse la porta dietro a sè e ai suoi figli: essi le presentavano i vasi, ed essa versava.
6 When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not another." Then the oil stopped flowing.	6 Quando i vasi furon pieni, disse ad uno dei suoi figli: « Portami un altro vaso ». Ma quello rispose: « Non ce n'è più ». E l'olio si fermò.
7 She came and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest."	7 Allora essa andò a riferire all'uomo di Dio, il quale disse: « Va a vendere l'olio e paga il tuo creditore, e tu e i tuoi figli vivete del rimanente ».
8 One day Elisha went on to Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food.	8 Un giorno Eliseo passava per Sunam, ove era una ricca donna che lo trattenne a mangiare. Siccome ci passava spesso di lì, andava da lei a mangiare.
9 And she said to her husband, "Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, who is continually passing our way.	9 Essa disse a suo marito: « Vedo bene che è un santo uomo di Dio colui che passa spesso da noi;
10 Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there."	10 facciamogli adunque una piccola stanza con un letto, una tavola, una seggiola e un candeliere, affinchè , venendo da noi, vi possa dimorare ».
11 One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there.	11 Così un giorno Eliseo, ritornato, andò nella stanza e vi si riposò.
12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, "Call this Shunammite." When he had called her, she stood before him.	12 E disse a Giezi suo servo: « Chiama questa Sunamite ». Giezi la chiamò ed essa si presentò a lui,
13 And he said to him, "Say now to her, See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?" She answered, "I dwell among my own people."	13 che disse al suo servo: « Dille: ecco, tu ci hai serviti in tutto con ogni cura; che vuoi che io ti faccia? Hai qualche affare, e vuoi che ne parli al re, o al capo dell'esercito? » Essa rispose: « Io abito in mezzo al mio popolo ».
14 And he said, "What then is to be done for her?" Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old."	14 Eliseo disse: « Che vuole adunque che le faccia? » Giezi rispose: « Non t'affannare a cercarlo: essa non ha figli, e suo marito è vecchio ».
15 He said, "Call her." And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway.	15 Eliseo ordinò di chiamarla, ed essa, chiamata che fu, si fermò alla porta.
16 And he said, "At this season, when the time comes round, you shall embrace a son." And she said, "No, my lord, O man of God; do not lie to your maidservant."	16 Eliseo le disse: « In questo tempo, in questa stessa ora, se sarai in vita, avrai nel seno un figlio ». Essa rispose: « Non voler, te ne prego, o signor mio, o uomo di Dio, non voler ingannare la tua serva ».
17 But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time the following spring, as Elisha had said to her.	17 La donna concepì e partorì un figlio nel tempo e nell'ora detta da Eliseo.
18 When the child had grown, he went out one day to his father among the reapers.	18 Il fanciullo divenne adulto; ma un giorno, essendo andato a trovare suo padre dai mietitori,
19 And he said to his father, "Oh, my head, my head!" The father said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother."	19 disse a suo padre: «Mi duole il capo, mi duole il capo! » Il padre disse ad un servo: « Prendilo e menalo a sua madre ».
20 And when he had lifted him, and brought him to his mother, the child sat on her lap till noon, and then he died.	20 Avendolo quello preso e condotto a sua madre, essa se lo tenne sulle ginocchia fino al mezzogiorno; ma egli morì.
21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.	21 Essa allora salì, e lo pose sul letto dell'uomo di Dio, e, chiusa la porta, uscì,
22 Then she called to her husband, and said, "Send me one of the servants and one of the asses, that I may quickly go to the man of God, and come back again."	22 Chiamò suo marito e gli disse: « Manda, te ne scongiuro, con me uno dei servi con un'asina, ch'io possa correre dall'uomo di Dio e tornare ».
23 And he said, "Why will you go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath." She said, "It will be well."	23 Egli le disse: « Perchè vuoi andare a trovarlo? Non è oggi il primo del mese, e non è sabato ». Essa rispose: « Bisogna che vada ».
24 Then she saddled the ass, and she said to her servant, "Urge the beast on; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you."	24 E sellata l'asina, essa disse al servo: « Conducimi e fa presto, non mi far trattenere nel cammino e fa quello che ti ordino ».
25 So she set out, and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, "Look, yonder is the Shunammite;	25 Essa adunque partì e andò dall'uomo di Dio sul monte Carmelo. L'uomo di Dio, avendola vista da lontano, disse a Giezi suo servo: « Ecco quella Sunamite:
26 run at once to meet her, and say to her, Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?" And she answered, "It is well."	26 va ad incontrarla e dille: State bene tu, il tuo marito e il tuo figlio? » Essa rispose: « Bene ».
27 And when she came to the mountain to the man of God, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came to thrust her away. But the man of God said, "Let her alone, for she is in bitter distress; and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me."	27 Ma giunta che fu dall'uomo di Dio, sul monte, gli abbracciò i piedi. Giezi si accostò per allontanarla; ma l'uomo di Dio gli disse: « Lasciala fare; perchè l'anima sua è nell'amarezza, e il Signore me l'ha nascosto, non me l'ha fatto conoscere ».
28 Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, Do not deceive me?"	28 Essa disse: « Forse lo dimandai io un figlio al mio signore? E non ti dissi: Non m'ingannare?»
29 He said to Gehazi, "Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If you meet any one, do not salute him; and if any one salutes you, do not reply; and lay my staff upon the face of the child."	29 Eliseo disse a Giezi: « Cingiti i lombi, prendi il mio bastone nella tua mano e parti. Se trovi qualcuno, non lo salutare, se uno ti saluta non gli rispondere, e metti il mio bastone sulla faccia del fanciullo ».
30 Then the mother of the child said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So he arose and followed her.	30 Ma la madre del fanciullo disse: « Viva il Signore e viva l'anima tua! Io non ti lascerò ». Eliseo allora si mosse e le tenne dietro.
31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff upon the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. Therefore he returned to meet him, and told him, "The child has not awaked."	31 Giezi, che era andato loro avanti, aveva messo il bastone sulla faccia del fanciullo; ma non v'era nè voce, nè senso. Allora egli ritornò incontro a Eliseo e gli diede la notizia, dicendo: « Il fanciullo non è risuscitato ».
32 When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed.	32 Eliseo, entrato che fu in casa, vide il fanciullo morto steso sul suo letto,
33 So he went in and shut the door upon the two of them, and prayed to the LORD.	33 Entrò, chiuse l'uscio dietro a sè e al fanciullo, e pregò il Signore.
34 Then he went up and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm.	34 Poi salì (sul letto), si distese sopra il fanciullo, gli pose sulla bocca la sua bocca, sugli occhi i suoi occhi, sulle mani le sue mani; stette curvo sopra di lui, e la carne del fanciullo divenne calda.
35 Then he got up again, and walked once to and fro in the house, and went up, and stretched himself upon him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.	35 Sceso e andato un po' in qua e là per la casa, risalì, e si distese sopra il fanciullo, il quale sbadigliò sette volte e aperse gli occhi.
36 Then he summoned Gehazi and said, "Call this Shunammite." So he called her. And when she came to him, he said, "Take up your son."	36 Eliseo allora chiamò Giezi, e gli disse: « Chiama questa Sunamite ». Essa, appena chiamata, entrò da lui, che le disse: « Prendi il tuo figlio ».
37 She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground; then she took up her son and went out.	37 Essa andò a gettarsi ai piedi d'Eliseo, e si prostrò a terra, poi prese il suo figlio e uscì.
38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal when there was a famine in the land. And as the sons of the prophets were sitting before him, he said to his servant, "Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets."	38 Elìseo se ne tornò a Galgala. Or vi era la fame nel paese, e i figli dei profeti abitavano presso di lui. Egli disse ad uno dei suoi servi: « Prendi la gran caldaia e cuoci la minestra per i figli dei profeti ».
39 One of them went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds, and came and cut them up into the pot of pottage, not knowing what they were.	39 Or uno di essi uscì fuori alla campagna a cogliere dell'erbe dei campi, e trovata una specie di vite selvatica, da essa colse degli zucchetti selvatici, ed empitone il mantello e fatto ritorno, li tagliò in pezzi nella caldaia della minestra, non sapendo di che si trattasse.
40 And they poured out for the men to eat. But while they were eating of the pottage, they cried out, "O man of God, there is death in the pot!" And they could not eat it.	40 Fu versato poi ai compagni, perchè ne mangiassero; ed essi, appena sentita quella roba cotta, gridarono dicendo: « Uomo di Dio, la morte è nella caldaia! » E non poterono mangiarne.
41 He said, "Then bring meal." And he threw it into the pot, and said, "Pour out for the men, that they may eat." And there was no harm in the pot.	41 Ma Eliseo disse: « Portatemi della farina ». Come l'ebbero portata, la versò nella caldaia, poi disse: « Versatene alla gente, chè ne mangino ». E non vi fu più nulla di amaro nella caldaia.
42 A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Elisha said, "Give to the men, that they may eat."	42 Essendo venuto un uomo di Baalsalisa a portare all'uomo di Dio dei pani di primizie, venti pani d'orzo, e del grano nuovo nella sua bisaccia, Eliseo disse: « Danne al popolo, affinchè mangi ».
43 But his servant said, "How am I to set this before a hundred men?" So he repeated, "Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and have some left.'"	43 Il suo servo gli rispose: « Come può bastare per cento uomini? » Ma Eliseo disse di nuovo: « Danne alla gente e ne mangino, perchè così dice il Signore: Mangeranno e ne avanzerà ».
44 So he set it before them. And they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the LORD.	44 Egli allora mise davanti alla gente, e mangiarono, e ne avanzò, secondo la parola del Signore.
