1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.	1 Ácháb azonban elbeszélte Jezabelnek mindazt, amit Illés cselekedett, s hogy mi módon ölte meg az összes prófétát a kard által.
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow."	2 Erre Jezabel követet küldött Illéshez ezzel az üzenettel: »Sújtsanak engem az istenek, most és mindenkor, ha holnap ilyenkorra olyanná nem teszem életedet, mint amilyen azok bármelyikének élete.«
3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.	3 Megijedt erre Illés és felkelt, s elment, amerre éppen akarata vitte. A júdai Beersebába érve, otthagyta legényét,
4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree; and he asked that he might die, saying, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am no better than my fathers."	4 maga pedig egy napi járásnyira bement a pusztába. Miután beért, s egy borókafenyő alá leült, azt kívánta magának, hogy haljon meg. Így szólt: »Elég volt, Uram, vedd el életemet, mert én sem vagyok jobb, mint atyáim.«
5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat."	5 Majd lefeküdt és elaludt a borókafenyő árnyában. Ekkor, íme, az Úr angyala megérintette és azt mondta neki: »Kelj fel, s egyél.«
6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank, and lay down again.	6 Odatekintett, s íme, egy hamuban sült lepény és egy edény víz volt a fejénél; evett tehát és ivott, s ismét elaludt.
7 And the angel of the LORD came again a second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, else the journey will be too great for you."	7 Ekkor másodszor is eljött az Úr angyala, s megérintette és azt mondta neki: »Kelj fel, egyél, mert nagy út vár rád.«
8 And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.	8 Ő felkelt, evett és ivott, s ennek az ételnek az erejével negyven nap és negyven éjjel ment, egészen az Isten hegyéig, a Hórebig.
9 And there he came to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"	9 Amikor odaért, megszállt a barlangban. Ekkor íme, az Úr szózatot intézett hozzá, e szavakkal: »Mit művelsz itt, Illés?«
10 He said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the people of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thy altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."	10 Ő azt felelte rá: »Nagyon buzgólkodtam az Úrért, a Seregek Istenéért, mert Izrael fiai elhagyták szövetségedet, lerontották oltáraidat, megölték prófétáidat karddal, egyedül én maradtam meg, s most nekem is életemre törnek, hogy elvegyék.«
11 And he said, "Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake;	11 Azt mondta erre neki: »Jöjj ki, s állj a hegyre az Úr elé,« s íme, ott elvonul az Úr, s az Úr előtt nagy és erős szélvész, amely hegyeket forgat fel és sziklákat zúz össze, s a szélvészben nincs az Úr – s a szélvész után földrengés, s a földrengésben nincs az Úr –
12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.	12 s a földrengés után tűz, s a tűzben nincs az Úr – s a tűz után enyhe szellő susogása.
13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"	13 Amikor ezt Illés meghallotta, palástjával eltakarta arcát, s kiment, s kiállt a barlang ajtajába. Ekkor íme, egy hang szólt hozzá, s azt mondta: »Mit művelsz itt, Illés?«
14 He said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the people of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thy altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."	14 Ő azt felelte rá: »Nagyon buzgólkodtam az Úrért, a seregek Istenéért, mert Izrael fiai elhagyták szövetségedet, lerontották oltáraidat, prófétáidat megölték karddal, egyedül én maradtam meg, s most nekem is életemre törnek, hogy elvegyék.«
15 And the LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;	15 Azt mondta erre neki az Úr: »Eredj, s térj vissza utadon a pusztán át Damaszkuszba, s ha odaérsz, kend fel Házaélt Szíria királyává,
16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.	16 Jéhut, Námsi fiát pedig kend fel Izrael királyává, Elizeust, az ábelmehulai Sáfát fiát pedig kend fel prófétává a te helyedbe.
17 And him who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.	17 Így az fog történni, hogy aki megmenekül Házaél kardjától, azt Jéhu öli meg, s aki megmenekül Jéhu kardjától, azt Elizeus öli meg.
18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him."	18 Csak hétezer embert hagyok meg magamnak Izraelben, azokat, akiknek térde nem hajolt meg Baál előtt, s akiknek ajka nem hódolt kézcsókkal neki.«
19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his mantle upon him.	19 Elindult tehát onnan Illés és ráakadt Elizeusra, Sáfát fiára, aki éppen szántatott tizenkét iga marhával, s maga is egyike volt azoknak, akik a tizenkét iga marhával szántottak. Erre Illés odament hozzá, s rávetette palástját.
20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back again; for what have I done to you?"	20 Ő tüstént otthagyta a barmokat, s utána futott Illésnek, s azt mondta: »Hadd csókoljam meg, kérlek, apámat s anyámat, s aztán majd követlek.« Ő azt mondta neki: »Eredj csak és térj vissza, mert ami az én dolgom volt, megtettem veled.«
21 And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered to him.	21 Miután visszatért tőle, vett egy iga marhát, levágta, a marhák ekéjével megfőzte a húst, odaadta a népnek, hogy egyenek, aztán felkelt, elment, s követte Illést, s a szolgája lett.
