Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition DOUAI-RHEIMS
And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day.1 And the Lord appeared to him in the vale of Mambre as he was sitting at the door of his tent, in the very heat of the day.
He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the earth,
and said, "My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.3 And when he had lifted up his eyes, there appeared to him three men standing near him: and as soon as he saw them he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and adored down to the ground.
Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree,4 And he said: Lord, if I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away from thy servant:
while I fetch a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on--since you have come to your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said."5 But I will fetch a little water, and wash ye your feet, and rest ye under the tree.
And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes."6 And I will set a morsel of bread, and strengthen ye your heart, afterwards you shall pass on: for therefore are you come aside to your servant. And they said: Do as thou hast spoken.
And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it.7 Abraham made haste into the tent to Sera, and said to her: Make haste, temper together three measures of flour, and make cakes upon the hearth.
Then he took curds, and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.8 And he himself ran to the herd, and took from thence a calf very tender and very good, and gave it to a young man: who made haste and boiled it.
They said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "She is in the tent."9 He took also butter and milk, and the calf which he had boiled, and set before them: but he stood by them under the tree.
The LORD said, "I will surely return to you in the spring, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.10 And when they had eaten, they said to him: Where is Sara thy wife? He answered: Lo, she is in the tent.
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.11 And he said to him: I will return and come to thee at this time, life accompanying and Sara thy wife shall have a son. Which when Sara heard, she laughed behind the door of the tent.
So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?"12 Now they were both old, and far advanced in years, and it had ceased to be with Sara after the manner of women.
The LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?'13 And she laughed secretly, saying: After I am grown old
Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, in the spring, and Sarah shall have a son."14 And the Lord said to Abraham: Why did Sera laugh, saying: Shall I who am an old woman bear a child indeed ?
But Sarah denied, saying, "I did not laugh"; for she was afraid. He said, "No, but you did laugh."15 Is there any thing hard to God? according to appointment I will return to thee at this same time, life accompanying, and Sara shall have a son.
Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way.16 Sara denied, saying: I did not laugh: for she was afraid. But the Lord said, Nay: but thou didst laugh:
The LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,17 And when the men rose up from thence, they turned their eyes towards Sodom: and Abraham walked with them, bringing them on the way.
seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by him?18 And the Lord said: Can I hide from Abraham what I am about to do:
No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice; so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him."19 Seeing he shall become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed?
Then the LORD said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave,20 For I know that he will command his children, and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord, and do judgment and justice: that for Abraham's sake the Lord may bring to effect all the things he hath spoken unto him.
I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry which has come to me; and if not, I will know."21 And the Lord said: The cry of Sodom and Gomorrha is multiplied, and their sin is become exceedingly grievous.
So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham still stood before the LORD.22 I will go down and see whether they have done according to the cry that is come to me: or whether it be not so, that I may know.
Then Abraham drew near, and said, "Wilt thou indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked?23 And they turned themselves from thence, and went their way to Sodom: but Abraham as yet stood before the Lord.
Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou then destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?24 And drawing nigh he said: Wilt thou destroy the just with the wicked?
Far be it from thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"25 If there be fifty just men in the city, shall they perish withal? and wilt thou not spare that place for the sake of the fifty just, if they be therein?
And the LORD said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake."26 Far be it from thee to do this thing, and to slay the just with the wicked, and for the just to be in like case as the wicked, this is not beseeming thee: thou who judgest all the earth, wilt not make this judgment.
Abraham answered, "Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.27 And the Lord said to him: If I And in Sodom fifty just within the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.
Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Wilt thou destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there."28 And Abraham answered, and said: Seeing I have once begun, I will speak to my Lord, whereas I am dust and ashes.
Again he spoke to him, and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it."29 What if there be Ave less than fifty just persons? wilt thou for five and forty destroy the whole city? And he said: I will not destroy it, if I find five and forty.
Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there."30 And again he said to him: But if forty be found there, what wilt thou do? He said: I will not destroy it for the sake of forty.
He said, "Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it."31 Lord, saith he, be not angry, I beseech thee, if I speak: What if thirty shall be found there? He answered: I will not do it, if I And thirty there.
Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it."32 Seeing, saith he, I have once begun, I will speak to my Lord. What if twenty be found there? He said: I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.
And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.33 I beseech thee, saith he, be not angry, Lord, if I speak yet once more: What if tell should be found there ? And he said: I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.
