1 - Figliuolo mio, se hai fatto sicurtà pel tuo amico, hai impegnato la mano presso un estraneo,	1 My son, if you have become surety to your neighbor, given your hand in pledge to another,
2 ti sei vincolato colle parole della tua bocca e obbligato colle tue stesse profferte.	2 You have been snared by the utterance of your lips, caught by the words of your mouth;
3 Fa' dunque quel che ti dico, o figliuolo mio, e libera te stesso, giacchè sei caduto nelle mani del tuo prossimo. Va', corri, affrettati, scuoti il tuo amico;	3 So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's power: Go, hurry, stir up your neighbor!
4 Non dare riposo agli occhi tuoi, non sonnecchino le tue palpebre;	4 Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids;
5 svincolati, come un daino, da chi l'ha preso, e come uccello di mano all'uccellatore.	5 Free yourself as a gazelle from the snare, or as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Va', pigro, dalla formica, considera le sue vie e impara a esser saggio.	6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, study her ways and learn wisdom;
7 Essa, senza avere nè duce, nè istruttore, nè principe,	7 For though she has no chief, no commander or ruler,
8 prepara nell'estate il suo sostentamento e nel tempo della mèsse raccoglie da mangiare.	8 She procures her food in the summer, stores up her provisions in the harvest.
9 Infino a quando, o pigro, dormirai? quand'è che t'alzerai dal tuo sonno?	9 How long, O sluggard, will you rest? when will you rise from your sleep?
10 Un po' dormi, un po' sonnecchi, un po' tieni le mani in mano per riposare;	10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--
11 e intanto la povertà ti raggiunge, come un viandante, e l'indigenza, come un uomo armato. Ma se tu sarai solerte, verrà come una sorgente la tua mèsse e l'indigenza fuggirà lungi da te.	11 Then will poverty come upon you like a highway man, and want like an armed man.
12 Un rinnegato, un uomo che non è niente di buono, procede con bocca perversa;	12 A scoundrel, a villain, is he who deals in crooked talk.
13 ammicca cogli occhi, tenta col piede, parla col dito;	13 He winks his eyes, shuffles his feet, makes signs with his fingers;
14 nel cattivo suo cuore, macchina il male e in ogni tempo semina discordie.	14 He has perversity in his heart, is always plotting evil, sows discord.
15 Verrà sopra costui improvvisamente la sua rovinasi schianterà d'un colpo senza più rimedio.	15 Therefore suddenly ruin comes upon him; in an instant he is crushed beyond cure.
16 Sono sei cose che il Signore odia, e la settima è in esecrazione all'anima sua:	16 There are six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to him;
17 occhi alteri, lingua bugiarda, mani spargitrici di sangue innocente,	17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;
18 cuore che macchina disegni iniqui, piedi veloci a correre al male,	18 A heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly to evil,
19 chi proferisce menzogne in falso testimonio, e colui che semina discordie tra i fratelli.	19 The false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
20 Fa' tesoro, o figliuolo mio, dei precetti di tuo padre e non lasciare la legge di tua madre.	20 Observe, my son, your father's bidding, and reject not your mother's teaching;
21 Tienli legati sopra il tuo cuore sempre e annodali al tuo collo.	21 Keep them fastened over your heart always, put them around your neck;
22 Quando viaggi camminino teco, quando dormi ti custodiscano, e vegliando intrattienti con essi.
23 Perchè lampada è il precetto e luce la legge e strada di vita è la correzione della disciplina.	23 For the bidding is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and a way to life are the reproofs of discipline;
24 Per guardarti dalla donna malvagia e dalla lusingatrice lingua dell'avventuriera.	24 To keep you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
25 Il tuo cuore non vagheggi la sua bellezzanon lasciarti prendere dai suoi cenni.	25 Lust not in your heart after her beauty, let her not captivate you with her glance!
26 Perchè il prezzo di una cortigiana è d'un pane appena, mentre la donna di partito fa preda di un'anima preziosa.	26 For the price of a loose woman may be scarcely a loaf of bread, But if she is married, she is a trap for your precious life.
27 Può forse un uomo tenersi del fuoco in senosenza che brucino le sue vesti?	27 Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his garments not burned?
28 o camminare sulle bracisenza scottarsi le piante?	28 Or can a man walk on live coals, and his feet not be scorched?
29 Così chi frequenta la donna altrui; non sarà netto se l'avrà toccata.	29 So with him who goes in to his neighbor's wife-- none who touches her shall go unpunished.
30 Non è gran colpa se uno ha rubato, quando ruba per empirsi il ventre, avendo fame;	30 Men despise not the thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry;
31 anche colto, restituirà sette tanti; darà magari tutta la sostanza di casa sua.	31 Yet if he be caught he must pay back sevenfold; all the wealth of his house he may yield up.
32 Ma l'adultero, per la sua insensataggine, perderà la sua anima.	32 But he who commits adultery is a fool; he who would destroy himself does it.
33 Egli raccoglierà disonore e vergogna e la sua infamia non si cancellerà.	33 A degrading beating will he get, and his disgrace will not be wiped away;
34 Perchè la gelosia furibonda del marito non gliela risparmierà nel dì della vendetta;	34 For vindictive is the husband's wrath, he will have no pity on the day of vengeance;
35 non si acquieterà alle preghiere di nessuno, nè accetterà ammenda di doni per quanto numerosi.	35 He will not consider any restitution, nor be satisfied with the greatest gifts.
