And the leaders of the families of Levi approached Eleazar, the priest, and Joshua, the son of Nun, and the rulers of the extended families of each of the tribes of the sons of Israel.1 The heads of the Levite families came up to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua, son of Nun, and to the heads of families of the other tribes of the Israelites
And they spoke to them at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, and they said, “The Lord instructed, by the hand of Moses, that cities should be given to us as habitations, with their suburbs to nourish our cattle.”2 at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, and said to them, "The LORD commanded, through Moses, that cities be given us to dwell in, with pasture lands for our livestock."
And so the sons of Israel gave cities and their suburbs from their possessions, in accord with the order of the Lord.3 Out of their own heritage, in obedience to this command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites the following cities with their pasture lands.
And the lot went out for the family of Kohath, of the sons of Aaron, the priest, from the tribes of Judah and Simeon and Benjamin: thirteen cities.4 When the first lot among the Levites fell to the clans of the Kohathites, the descendants of Aaron the priest obtained thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
And to the remainder of the sons of Kohath, that is, to the Levites who were left over, there went, from the tribes of Ephraim and Dan, and from the one half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.5 The rest of the Kohathites obtained ten cities by lot from the clans of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
And next the lot went out to the sons of Gershon, so that they would receive, from the tribes of Issachar and Asher and Naphtali, and from the one half tribe of Manasseh at Bashan: the number of thirteen cities.6 The Gershonites obtained thirteen cities by lot from the clans of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh.
And to the sons of Merari, by their families, from the tribes of Reuben and Gad and Zebulun, there went twelve cities.7 The clans of the Merarites obtained twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
And so the sons of Israel gave cities and their suburbs to the Levites, just as the Lord instructed by the hand of Moses, distributing to each by lot.8 These cities with their pasture lands the Israelites allotted to the Levites in obedience to the LORD'S command through Moses.
From the tribes of the sons of Judah and Simeon, Joshua gave cities, whose names are these:9 From the tribes of the Judahites and Simeonites they designated the following cities,
to the sons of Aaron, of the families of Kohath of the stock of Levi, (for the first lot went out for them,)10 and assigned them to the descendants of Aaron in the Kohathite clan of the Levites, since the first lot fell to them:
the city of Arba, the father of Anak, which is called Hebron, on the mountain of Judah, and its surrounding suburbs.11 first, Kiriath-arba (Arba was the father of Anak), that is, Hebron, in the mountain region of Judah, with the adjacent pasture lands,
Yet truly, the fields and its villages he had given to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, as a possession.12 although the open country and villages belonging to the city had been given to Caleb, son of Jephunneh, as his property.
Therefore, he gave to the sons of Aaron the priest, Hebron as a city of refuge, as well as its suburbs, and Libnah, with its suburbs,13 Thus to the descendants of Aaron the priest were given the city of asylum for homicides at Hebron, with its pasture lands; also, Libnah with its pasture lands,
and Jattir, and Eshtemoa,14 Jattir with its pasture lands, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,
and Holon, and Debir,15 Holon with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands,
and Ain, and Juttah, and Beth-shemesh, with their suburbs: nine cities from two tribes, just as has been said.16 Ashan with its pasture lands, Juttah with its pasture lands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasture lands: nine cities from the two tribes mentioned.
Then, from the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, he gave Gibeon, and Geba,17 From the tribe of Benjamin they obtained the four cities of Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,
and Anathoth, and Almon, with their suburbs: four cities.18 Anathoth with its pasture lands, and Almon with its pasture lands.
All the cities together of the sons of Aaron, the priest, were thirteen, with their suburbs.19 These cities which with their pasture lands belonged to the priestly descendants of Aaron, were thirteen in all.
Yet truly, the remainder of the families of the sons of Kohath, of the stock of Levi, were given this possession:20 The rest of the Kohathite clans among the Levites obtained by lot, from the tribe of Ephraim, four cities.
from the tribe of Ephraim, Shechem, one of the cities of refuge, with its suburbs, on mount Ephraim, and Gezer,21 They were assigned, with its pasture lands, the city of asylum for homicides at Shechem in the mountain region of Ephraim; also Gezer with its pasture lands,
and Kibzaim, and Beth-horon, with their suburbs, four cities;22 Kibzaim with its pasture lands, and Beth-horon with its pasture lands.
and from the tribe of Dan, Elteke and Gibbethon,23 From the tribe of Dan they obtained the four cities of Elteke with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands,
and Aijalon and Gath-Rimmon, with their suburbs, four cities;24 Aijalon with its pasture lands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands;
then, from the one half tribe of Manasseh, Taanach and Gath-Rimmon, with their suburbs, two cities.25 and from the half-tribe of Manasseh the two cities of Taanach with its pasture lands and Ibleam with its pasture lands.
All the cities were ten, with their suburbs; these were given to the sons of Kohath, of the lesser degree.26 These cities which with their pasture lands belonged to the rest of the Kohathite clans were ten in all.
Likewise, to the sons of Gershon, of the stock of Levi, from the one half tribe of Manasseh, went Golan in Bashan, one of the cities of refuge, and Bosra, with their suburbs, two cities;27 The Gershonite clan of the Levites received from the half-tribe of Manasseh two cities: the city of asylum for homicides at Golan, with its pasture lands; and also Beth-ashtaroth with its pasture lands.
also, from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion, and Daberath,28 From the tribe of Issachar they obtained the four cities of Kishion with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands,
and Jarmuth, and Engannim, with their suburbs, four cities;29 Jarmuth with its pasture lands, and En-gannim with its pasture lands; from the tribe of Asher,
then, from the tribe of Asher, Mishal and Abdon,30 the four cities of Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands,
and Helkath and Rehob, with their suburbs, four cities;31 Helkath with its pasture lands, and Rehob with its pasture lands;
likewise, from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, one of the cities of refuge, and Hammoth-Dor, and Kartan, with their suburbs, three cities.32 and from the tribe of Naphtali, three cities: the city of asylum for homicides at Kedesh in Galilee, with its pasture lands; also Hammath with its pasture lands, and Rakkath with its pasture lands.
All the cities of the families of Gershon were thirteen, with their suburbs.33 These cities which with their pasture lands belonged to the Gershonite clans were thirteen in all.
Then, to the sons of Merari, Levites of the lesser degree, by their families, were given, from the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam and Kartah,34 The Merarite clans, the last of the Levites, received from the tribe of Zebulun the four cities of Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands,
and Dimnah and Nahalal, four cities with their suburbs;35 Rimmon with its pasture lands, and Nahalal with its pasture lands;
from the tribe of Reuben, beyond the Jordan, opposite Jericho, Bezer in the wilderness, one of the cities of refuge, Misor and Jazer, and Jethson and Mephaath, four cities with their suburbs;36 also, across the Jordan, from the tribe of Reuben, four cities: the city of asylum for homicides at Bezer with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands,
from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth of Gilead, one of the cities of refuge, and Mahanaim and Heshbon and Jazer, four cities with their suburbs.37 Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mephaath with its pasture lands;
All the cities of the sons of Merari, by their families and extended families, were twelve.38 and from the tribe of Gad a total of four cities: the city of asylum for homicides at Ramoth in Gilead with its pasture lands, also Mahanaim with its pasture lands,
And so all the cities of the Levites, in the midst of the possession of the sons of Israel, were forty-eight,39 Heshbon with its pasture lands, and Jazer with its pasture lands.
with their suburbs, each distributed by families.40 The cities which were allotted to the Merarite clans, the last of the Levites, were therefore twelve in all.
And the Lord God gave to Israel all the land that he had sworn he would deliver to their fathers. And they possessed it, and they lived in it.41 Thus the total number of cities within the territory of the Israelites which, with their pasture lands, belonged to the Levites, was forty-eight.
And he gave them peace with all the surrounding nations. And none of their enemies dared to stand against them; instead, they were brought under their sovereignty.42 With each and every one of these cities went the pasture lands round about it.
Indeed, not so much as one word that he had promised to provide for them was left empty; instead, everything was fulfilled.43 And so the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to their fathers he would give them. Once they had conquered and occupied it,
the LORD gave them peace on every side, just as he had promised their fathers. Not one of their enemies could withstand them; the LORD brought all their enemies under their power.
Not a single promise that the LORD made to the house of Israel was broken; every one was fulfilled.
